When I was 18 I had to be in at the restaurant I worked at for 10am. I called my boss at 8 and said I had been out all night and I needed more than and hour or so of sleep so I wouldn't be in until my afternoon shift...lol

No reason for a ridiculous excuse. I'm sick or car problems works every time.

I get plenty of paid personal and sick time so I take advantage of that.

The best thing to do is to say you have a job interview. Bosses love to hear that.

I worked with a guy who called and said his hemorrhoids flared up really bad. It hurt just standing up, so he wasn't coming in and was going to spend the day laying on his side.

The best I ever got when I managed a restaurant was my sole lunch delivery driver (organizer of a professional whiffle ball league with not enough members to play 2 on 2) was that he couldn't come in because he fell down the stairs naked.

If they win the next three game, the parade will happen on Wednesday.

I will simply call in early and leave a voice message......"Not coming in today, I can't deal with the Giants victory parade, the constant screaming is something I can't handle"

+1

I don't even do the I'm sick, just "Not feeling well, I'm available via cell or email if needed" or even "I have some things to tend to, so I need to be around the house today"

I can even blend WFH (work from home) into a sick/vacation day to only use up 3-4 hours of PTO.

You don't have to lie if you are a good worker and have a good relationship with your Boss/Coworkers. Then again, I work for an incredible organization that takes care of it's employees.

HA! Call in with an excuse for a day off... WTF is that!? I am 26 years old and have worked in my fathers automotive business since I was 15. He is a former marine so he is a pretty strait line fella. It usually takes one of our employees one try to make a bs call in to work, and then it is never done again. My father literally surprises people, drives to their homes to make sure they are "ok", and it usually results in a hung over employee or an extra car in the driveway. We had one of our younger guys call in one day that he was "sick". Well his "friend" that works for us also comes up front and says he needs to leave early because they were having an event at the mall that he could not miss. Well he did miss it, and it also sent my mom (does our payroll, in charge of all the accounts, and the firing) to the mall just to see if our little buddy was there. She was there no longer than 5 minutes and she ran into our "sick" employee with his female friend. After she blessed him out for standing us up (it was a Saturday where we turn out about 100 vehicles in 6 hours) she then fired him on the spot in front of her. The guy was so embarrassed he got his mother to bring us his uniforms and told my mom just to keep his last check. Yeah, we don't call in around here. It is a mandatory doctors excuse, and do you think middle class Americans like us are going to come out of pocket and pay for a check up just so we can have the day off... Don't think so

I'm all for honesty and integrity, but at some point you gotta show your employees that you have a modicum of trust in them.

Job I hated when I was younger ... I showed up and sat on the toilet for an hour when I got there ... Just sat there though . Passing time . Someone even knocked to see if I was okay . Walked out and said I need to go home . No one questioned a thing

I called off once while working at my last job. I was out sick with walking pnemonia. Only time I called off in 3.5 years of working there. Job before that, I worked at for 7.5. Only time I called off is when I had cancer. I was supposed to be working from home.
