Default Why you should ALWAYS wear safety glasses

Was installing some siding on Tuesday. Went to the front where there was shade so I decided to take my shades off. Within 5 minutes a coworker was nailing some starter strip, hit metal and had the nail ricochet 6 feet...directly into my eye!
Total damage: punctured cornea, detached retina, loss of vision in my left eye, and a slight chance of regaining vision after my many surgeries to come. Seriously, within 5 minutes of me taking the glasses off!

Edit: sorry about the sideways pic!

Yeah, completely stupid move on my part. All of our work, lots of siding and roofing, needs glasses. And i wear them, other than to take off to wipe sweat or break time.
My coworker said it was like one of those cheesy safety videos, where an accident happens and all yoy say is "there's no way in hell that could even happen!". Maybe I should make my own safety video!

Wow, sorry to hear about that/see that.

Good luck with the surgeries and stay positive - the vision will be regained!

Dude, I am very sorry about this. You definitely have the best attitude of anyone I have ever known to potentially lose sight in an eye. I pray you can see again.

Wow, thats crazy. I hope all turns out well for you.

I get shampoo in my eyes in the shower and I whine about it. I can only imagine how painful that must be. Hopefully they give you some good meds to ease the pain.

You'll shoot your eye out!! Sorry, had to say it.

Good luck with recovery. I had a detached retina twice in 3 months a few years back, it sucked. My sight is back to 20/40 with glasses/contacts but it isn't perfect. Hope you get some sight back at least. If not, I know a few people with glass eyes that function fine. Best wishes.

Did he miss the nail when he was trying to nail it in? Usually I would think the nail just wouldn't budge if you hit it square on the head and the nail hit metal. Assuming this was vinyl siding. Or was it wood siding and this was the result of a nail gun?

He was hand nailing it. The nail hit an old nail head behind the house wrap. So when he swung, his nail hit the other nail head and it soon found my eye. We live in a very small town (300 or so) and just got back last night. Apparently the story has changed and I literally shot my eye out and have no left eye. Gotta love small town rumors..

I see. Just thinking about summers doing carpentry with my dad and instances where I or someone else hit a knot in the wood or another nail, sometimes the nail would shoot off, sometimes it would just not go into the wood, depends on how the nail was hit/held I guess. That sucks, the odds, one of those everything falls into place for it to happen I guess. Go buy a lottery ticket.

Yeah, I've had a framing nailer go through a knot before and into my hand. That one really wasn't my fault considering the knot wasn't visible. Thanks for the lotto advice, I'll have the wife get me some tickets and now I'll have something to do during the day!
