Default Is anyone here an Uber driver?

Uber recently came to my city and thought it would be a fun/convenient part time job.

If you are a driver, what good/bad experiences have you had? Any advice? What can I expect?

Let me know and thanks

A lot of drunk people, verbal abuse and the occasional physical abuse, people stiffing on the bill with clever scams...

As long as you're not in the purview of the NYPD, you should be okay...

I know a few guys here that do it in town and make a fortune (relatively speaking) if you can deal with the drunks.

Personally there isn't enough coin to get me to drive drunks around late at night and the hassles that come with it.

The money is there though. At least in Columbus.

I use Uber at least once a week. It's a phenomenal service.

I drove a taxi back in 03. My hips were going south and I was no longer able to drive long haul and sold my trucks. I was unsure where to go so the Taxi thing was something to keep from spinning in circles in confusion.
I drove for about 5 months, in the summer. I managed to pull in around 500-600 a week taking advantage of being white and sticking to white areas and hotels as well as carrying a professional look. I had other drivers ask me how I, as a newbie, was able to turn in twice the fares per day.
I would assume the same would apply to uber. If you look clean and professional you will get work and repeat calls. I had 3 different people whom would only drive with me and took care of me. 1 guy would come in town every 3 weeks and rent my car for the night. I took him to places he wished to go, helped him avoid bad recommendations and I ensured him, thought actions, that he was important to me. The last time I drove him I told him I was moving on that driving was simply to keep busy until I got my ducks in a row before changing careers. His final tip was 1500.00

The same SHOULD apply to driving for Uber. It's not the number of calls, but how you treat those you get. If people feel you are there for THEM and not just there, they will appreciate it. Also, not being regulated by a Taxi commission will allow for levity in fares and time frames.

Keep in mind that if you gouge, they will figure it out, they will warn others and you will hurt yourself down the road.

Now, drunks....
Drunks CAN be fun. Think on this, they are with you because they do not wish to go to jail. NEVER take a fare that promises payment at the destination. That gives them the option to go in and lock the door. If you start banging on the door, they call the cops and said you were paid and then you face potential trespassing charges...been there done that
DO NOT take fares where when you arrive, the people are arguing and yelling. I have had to involve the police in those situations more than once and you end up not getting paid as 1 tends to go to jail and the other says " They had the money".

So not pick up in questionable areas...ever. I had 3 mugging attempts and 3 failures. All 3 were picking up at stupid spots ( IE: Hospitals)
If you are given a commercial fare ( We would make pick ups for blood assurance to deliver to hospitals for low blood supplies or rare blood supplies) put yourself in the position of the person waiting on that blood. I knew some guys whom would pick it up and try to snag another walking fare so they could make a run off the books.

Give 110%, not 100%. Let the fare be right when need be and be apologetic, but firm on a rate, when there is confusion.

I would sit in front of the Marriott and when people would come to me, I would offer them flat rate fares that I knew I could finish in 5 minutes. It got them there cheaper and allowed me to consistently turn over time

While I cannot give you info as an Uber driver, I do know what worked well for me with a taxi cab. I had fun, but would not wish to do it for a living. Uber may be better or may be worse. Keep in mind that Uber has a smear campaign going on against it and people's remarks and questions will be based on what they see in the media.

Keep your car clean and keep in mind, if you allow smoking, luck will mean the next passenger will despise it, pay you and get away from your car ASAP. Have a story as to why you do not allow smoking. I would use Asthma. I smoke, but not in my car and I did not in my taxi either. People can get over not smoking, but a non-smoker will NOT get over sitting in a car that smells of stale smoke

I hope this helped or at least gives you ideas.

EDIT: Also, drive like you are driving a car load of kids to a game. Driving like you are jockeying for pole position at the Indy 500 is a bad way to shuffle through fares to try to snag an extra 10.00

From what I hear the trick is: have a nice car and don't look like a bum.

I do on my free weekends. I have a hot spot near me and most of the drives are within 5 miles of their. If you live near a happening place where most of the people live close you can make 200-300 on a Saturday night. If you work out of the bigger city's you will have longer drives outside the city. Drivers can rate passengers as well as passengers rating drivers. If a passengers rating drops they will not be able to use uber anymore which helps keep the drunk idiots out of your car. You also can see their rating before accepting a ride.

Any other questions pm me
