Newbie question, but what is the actual benefit of having minor league players on your fantasy team? May be a vague question but... I don't know why you would complicate things further with a player that might not play in the big leagues... you don't get any points from their minor league games, correct?

Correct. You won't accrue points for them unless they're activated to an MLB roster. For me, the benefit of minor leaguers being drafted is that good value is dropping. I personally didn't plan on going after MiLB until much later in the draft.

It's mostly strategy. By taking various minor leaguers now, you are trying to capitalize on their potential of what they might bring and their impact. Trevor Bauer may not start in the rotation right away, but he should be an impact pitcher when he does get there. At some point the potential of the minor leaguer is equal and then greater than what is available in the draft pool. At least that is what I think. I think also, that there are positions which are thin, and you can pick a prospect who plays at that position and not have to worry about it for a while.

Thanks guys!

7290morint, so you are saying you'd pick a prospect 3B (for example) who has a chance of making it to the major leagues over a crappy 3B already in the big leagues? Or will you have a good-decent 3B, a crappy 3B (incase good-decent goes on the DL) and a top 3B prospect in case he gets brought up and outshines the other two you have?

It really is situation dependent (at least for me it is). The thing is, with this league you don't have to worry about that because you are allowed to keep them on your bench. In my other league, you can only have prospects on your bench if you had them on your team the past season. You can pick up a minor leaguer/prospect at any time but they have to be on your active lineup (this prevents people from hoarding). So in that case little production vs no production isn't really at that different for me. That being said, it depends on who is available & what I think the value of that person is. Here, in this league, it really all depends on who is available and where things are.

Some would say that once you get to the mediocre players, you start going for some highly touted prospects that may be ayear away so that they can help you next year...mythought is prospects may or may not work out, so try to win in the year you are in...

but it really depends on how you feel about said prospect...in a 16 team draft like this one...talent gets pretty thin 16 x 25 players = 400 players and then 64 minor leguers on top of that, so even above average talent makes a huge difference
