Help with E78 1910 Boxing Cards

My father-in-law gave my son 6 old boxing cards, and I thought they were cool and just threw them in my "vintage" 3-wide. I had a couple of buddies over to the house to trade the other day, and showed them the boxing cards. They thought they are fairly rare, so I started researching them.

I think they are 1910 e78 boxing cards. There is no branding on the cards, and it says "twenty five prize fighters" on back.

I found some information online where it says this set was tough to find. I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with this set. Were there any reprints made? Are they worth sending off to PSA for authentication/grading? They are in decent shape, I'd guess 4-5 or so.

I took pictures of them, I have 6 in total, and they are below.

Thanks in advance for any information. Short of taking them to "Pawn Stars", I figured this was the best place to start!:D

Thanks! I saw that site on Google, but it's blocked for me at work. I'll try tonight. I appreciate the response!

I think this is the correct set:

I still think these are a rare find, Drew! They'll definitely help with Anthony's tuition when it's a gazillion dollars.

I am no expert by any means but just from looking at your pictures I would say those cards are awful white for being over 100 yrs. old. Paper will show fading or yellowing long before 100 years. I would try and get them authenticated before you made any attempt to sell them.

I completely agree. I have no idea if these were ever reprinted or not. Like I said, my father-in-law just gave them to my son. I know he bought them in the 70s at a flea market, but that's literally all I know.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Found this on Beckett.com, I kind of think these are real. I can't find any evidence they were ever reprinted.

1910 Anonymous E78

The E78 set of Prize Fighters looks very much like the sets issued by the American Caramel Company but there is no sponsor information on the backs. The cards measure approximately 1 1/2" by 2 3/4" and have a color artist's rendering on the front. The card backs were printed in black and feature a roster of boxers who are included in the set. The cards are arranged below in alphabetical order.

Thanks man, I emailed a administrator from a boxing cards website, I really think they are legit.

I called PSA, and these were never officially reprinted by any company. So if they are fake, then they are counterfiet. I'm sending them to PSA!

Paul, I forgot to show you that I also have the bag they came in. I called my father in law and told them we think we know what they are. HE bought them 20-30 years ago at an antique store in Radcliff, KY. He said he paid $90 for them.

DUDE, that is awesome! So....do I get a commission?

aja3217 02-05-2012 10:48 AM

They are back from PSA, here they are graded. 2 of them got 6's!

Based on the population report on PSA, these are rare. PSA also sent me pamphlet's from 3 different auction houses, so that leads me to believe they think these are rare too!

Ketchel was one of the best fighters around at the turn of the century. He got hammered by Jack Johnson though. Johnson was beating everyone then (I believe he fought Ketchel in 1909). James Jeffries came out of retirement to fight Johnson and he was heavily favored (mostly because he was white and there was a lot of disdain for a black boxer holding the heavyweight belt). He too was beat badly by Johnson though. Incredible cards, congrats.

Why is the James Corbett card labeled as Jefferies?

edit: awesome cards btw

Thanks for catching that, I didn't notice!

I called PSA and have to resubmit, but they said they will refund my money once the label is fixed. Kinda crappy, but nothing else I can do. If I decide to sell them, it looks pretty bad if the label doesn't match the card!

Ketchel was a great middleweight fighter.Fought Johnson for his heavyweight title.Only fighter to knock Johnson down !!

Great cards !!!

aja3217 02-25-2012 09:44 PM

Well, PSA fixed the error. Here is the re-slabbed card. Now to get my refund from PSA, and then to figure out if I should sell these or not.
