Default SPORTKINGS Series F - who do you want to see?

Now that Series E has been out a while, time to start looking ahead to Series F

Here's what I thought I would do...

1) Start a thread nominating athletes for Series F (this thread)
2) On August 31st, open two threads (one for team sports, one for individual sports) in which people can vote for their top 50 in each category
3) On October 31st, take the top 50 from each of the two preliminary threads and start a new thread in which people can vote for their final 48 athletes (since this is the usual size of a series) of of the 100 listed.
4) On December 31st, announce the final vote tally...

So this will become the nominating thread. For sanity's sake, please only nominate athletes who are no longer active, since I already have a list of 200+ retired athletes, and Dr. Price generally does not include more than 2-3 active athletes in each series. Also, keep in mind that Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and Bobby Orr are not included because they are under exclusive contract to Upper Deck.

Here goes:

Let's just keep in mind all the relevant factors that have already been discussed in prior threads before we jump into this;
SPORTKINGS - how can it be improved?

The problem with a "top 48" poll is it will merely trickle down to the top $$$ players and we've already tackled the imaging rights to some of those athletes are quite high even just to do base cards of them as you would like.

Combine that with some athletes (or their handlers) not even opting into the program despite Dr. Price's best efforts and that will knock out a certain percentage of any top 48 list automatically. So where's the end result here? Just a "wish list" which is fine, but not realistic.

I had fun last time we threw ideas out there for some of the lesser known sports. It contributed some pretty interesting ideas and names I hadn't heard of before and liked looking up.

I think you'll be surprised...I know that quite a few of the guys in my final 60 (I haven't cut it down to 48 yet) are not big money guys, and I'm sure the same will hold true for many of the other posters....

Individually, no doubt. My top 48 would have Katarina Witt, Gabriella Sabbatini, Gabrielle Reece and Jake "The Snake" Roberts (still waiting for the snakeskin boot memorabilia autos). I think everyone's bottom 10-15 would be fun and unique, but statistics catches up with you over more people as the top 20-30 are all the high dollar signers or hard to get people.

All I'm saying is just don't have the expectation of having the grand master list of "here's who we expect to have in version F". It'll be a nice wish list, but it's fun just being able to shout out one name or two and actually seeing Dr. price incorporate it into the product. It happened last year and I'm sure he'll be listening to new ideas this year as well.

From my perspective, the idea is to:

A) have fun
B) provide Dr. Price with some useful data both about which sports are and are not popular, as well as which athletes within each sports are most popular

Boris Becker. Pretty much all the people the OP listed for tennis aren't all that hard to get in terms of an auto from Ace. Since I have been collecting tennis I haven't seen anything pop up of Becker in terms of auto cards/balls.

Please remember that some athletes have exclusives with other card companies when creating your lists.

Thanks for the interest in Series F.

Okay, some early Olympic suggestions;

Ellen Hoog (women's field hockey) -- I'm pretty sure any orange memorabilia cards would sell pretty well; Dutch field hockey team

Dana Vollmer (swimming) - looks to have a great Olympics

Kim Rhodes (rifle) - maybe not a great $ choice and she is in Topps Olympics set, bet medaling in 5 straight Olympics is the definition of a Sportking.

Why, oh why, would you have over twice as many soccer players than hockey players on your list? I think the point is to add value, not subtract it.

Because most of the major hockey players who do not have exclusive contracts with other companies have already appeared in Sportkings....

Dr. Price, would it be possible for you to post a list of which athletes have exclusives with other companies? Upper Deck's exclusives with Jordan, Gretzky, and Orr are well-known, but it would be nice to know about all the others...

Here are a few suggestions:

Archie Stark (soccer) - record holder for most goals in a season (61) until Messi broke it in 2012.
George Best (soccer) - legend, legend, legend - if Upper Deck doe not own rights.
Gordon Banks (soccer) - arguably best post-war GK ever.
Ricardo Zamora (soccer) - great pre-war legend. would have been in the original 1930's series if it was international.
Dixie Dean (soccer) - Everton, pre-war legend (see above)
Alex Jackson (soccer) - played in USA and became legend in Britain
Kenny Dalglish (soccer) - King Kenny !

I would buy this series for a chance for any of these cards.
