Question for Wrestling collectors?

I am new to wrestling cards but have been collecting sports cards since I was a kid. My question is if there is a way to figure out which card is considered the 'rookie' card for wrestlers? I don't think they say on them the way that sports cards do? I know the 1982 set has a bunch of the classics but I'm wondering about current wrestlers as well? Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

I have been collecting wrestling cards for a long time and since they dont list a rookie card I just consider whatever the wrestlers first card is to be his rookie. Example being the 2005 WWE Heritage set with John Cena's first card.

Just have to make one correction about the John Cena RC card.

John Cena RC card would be 2002 WWE Royal Rumble produced by Fleer.

When I first dove head first into wrestling cards in 2009 I spent a lot of time on this site.

I think you have to be careful just using the first card as many came out first in the paper card sets. On a technical basis they are the first card but since they are newspaper and not card stock I prefer using the first actual trading card. Others feel differently and you must make that determination yourself.

The other major issue is scarcity. For example the first Road Warriors card is the 1985 Wrestling All Stars magazine card which is closer to a real card then the other magazine sets. I prefer using the Carnation card for The Road Warriors as it is virtually impossible to find and the card is from a very similar time frame and is a real card.

Some people also disagree with each other what is truly a RC because some wrestlers have had multiple wrestling names in different promotions. You have to make the determination your self which way you are going to go.

It's not as easy and clearcut as team sports cards. There are so many different card types, companies, and alternate wrestler names, it really needs to be discussed on an individual wrestler basis.

Many collectors consider the eariliest PSA gradable item on the population report to be the rookie card. But is really is just a matter of opinion.

Thanks for all the input. Anyone able to help me out with a jumping off point. I know a lot of the older wrestlers cards I want to get, can anyone help me out with two favorite that I'm not sure what to consider there rookies. Rey Mysterio and CM Punk.

there is also a parallel card, and he is on a tag team card also.

Rey Mysterio, Jr.:
1998 - Topps WCW/nWo - #32 Rey Mysterio, Jr.

1998 - Panini WCW/nWo Superstars Photocards - #73 Rey Mysterio, Jr.

The Topps Rey Mysterio autograph card wasn't inserted into packs, so not sure if that card should really count as a rookie card

Don't forget, a LOT of guys have cards over here in Japan too. Many started over here.

There are a lot of quality Japanese sets, but it's tough to collect them here in the United States.

Yeah, I noticed a New Japan "nWo" Sting on eBay the other day.

I don't believe they ever made a WCW card of fake Sting.

Are there autos in the Japan sets? If so did jun kasai have a auto or any of the Czw guys that worked over there?

Some of the sets (New Japan, All Japan, NOAH, Dragon Gate, Joshi) had autos. If I remember correctly BBM never did a Big Japan set, so the chances of a Kasai auto are slim. I can almost guarantee you none of the CZW guys signed cards for BBM.

Thanks for the info, been a fan of kasai for over 10 years when i first saw him in a tag match in Czw that got way out of control and he wound up with a broke arm. I have one of his figures along with zandigs and tons of his matches on DVDs but always wanted a auto.

Yahoo auctions is a good source for Japanese cards, but can be tricky due to language and payment issues.
