Default The #3 Car on the Pole for the 2014 Daytona 500

The #3 car made famous by the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. will lead the field to green in its first Cup race since that fateful day in 2001.

The driver will be Sprint Cup Rookie (and Richard Childress' grandson) Austin Dillon.

For those that don't know Childress owns the #3 car that Dale drove in for much of his career.

I'm guessing there will be some mixed feelings heading into the race, but it should have people talking nonetheless.

Childress's cars have been the fastest in practice so it's not a surprise one of his cars aro on the pole and one he supplies engines for is 2nd. Plus his other 3 cars were all in the top 12. Im going RCR is set for qualifing and not fixed.

Yeah I was joking around a bit.

Comparing Dillon to Danica was really a low blow.

That being said, like Ricky Stenhouse Jr. last season, it may not be an immediate rise to success at the Cup level for Austin.

Then again, like you said, Dillon has a little more pedigree with his team which could definitely help him be successful.

Nope. Not sure what the reasoning was. He'll have to earn a spot via the Duels on Thursday.

Blaney is a local driver for me, he grew up only about 15 miles from where I live. So I have been a fan of Blaney for years. He has never won a race but I think his best finish is third or maybe 2nd!

Three third place finishes (two at Talladega in 2007 and 2011).

I bet you remember that Blaney was leading when the Daytona 500 was halted two years ago when Montoya hit that jet dryer...your town must've been going nuts!

Childress was never his crew chief. He was his car's owner but not the crew chief.

My bad. Crew chiefs were guys like Larry McReynolds and Andy Petree.

Thanks for that.

I was disappointed to find out that they brought back the #3 with the same style/font as the old one. While I have mixed feelings about them not retiring the number as my favorite drive of all time was Earnhardt I thought they should at least redesign the style when they brought it back out of retirement

I agree.

There's enough on Dillon's new cars to set them apart from the all black cars Dale Sr drove but still too many similarities.

For example, why have black stripes on the Cherrios car, especially around the number? Pretty sure Cheerios is known more for their yellow box.

And the DOW car features a red "3" on the side but on the roof it's the "3" with a black background on the roof that looks similar to Dale's.

I actually like the look of the Cheerios car. My favorite combination for a car has always been yellow and black. Kind of reminds me of the new Cameros with that paint scheme. But yea, like you said there are too many similarities. Maybe they could have switched the 3 and had the top of it futher behind the bottom or something.
