Just saw what is either the best April Fools Day gag or worst possible trading card ---, but I saw that for Sport Kings series 2, they are going to have that hot dog eating guy -- Chestnutt or something like that. How much could his autograph be worth and what could possibly be a game-used?????

From the email I got a few days ago
Joey Chestnut will be one of four Future Stars included in Sportkings Series B. Joey Chestnut of San Jose, Calif., won the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, beating former champion Takeru Kobayashi and setting a new world record by downing 66 Nathan's Famous hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes. The Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest has been held each year since 1916, according to archives. The 2007 contest may have been the most highly anticipated match-up in the event's storied 92-year history. Police reported that nearly 50,000 people attended the event in Coney Island. More Series B Sport Kings Announced Four more Sport Kings have been confirmed for Series B. They include Miami Dolphin's legend - Dan Marino, Legendary Fight Trainer - Angelo Dundee, Baseball and Football Star - Bo Jackson and Body Building Pioneer - Franco Columbu. The list of Series B athletes is quite impressive and includes Jim Brown, Arnold Palmer. Bode Miller, Dolph Schayes, Randy Couture, Ron Tucotte and Roy Jones Jr. to name a few. Series B will be released on July 24, 2008. __________________ Blowouts Resident Wade Boggs Collector...also searching for multicolored 07 SP # 129 Tulowitzki By the Letter Rookie Signatures Auto Patch's /20. |

Honestly, even though I would want nothing to do with a competetive eating guys card, I'm pretty sure that there are gonna be fans of the "sport" that would be all over his auto and or game used. Stranger things have sold for quite a bit of money, and think of it this way, would you rather pull some random card like that, that could sell for a decent price, or another figures or stuckey auto that sells for nothing...

I'll add that Kobayashi is a lot more well known than Chestnut, but facts are facts: a horse was the top selling base card in Series A, and a competitive food champion was one of the top selling autos in A & G. It just brings me back to the fact that non-major sports athletes help drive products these days because they don't have any or many other cards. Case in point: I bet you Chestnut outsells legends like Dolph Schayes and Mark Messier, but I guess we'll see. A little off topic, but this totally reminds me of a line from my favorite comedian, Dave Attell, in reference to Ultimate Frisbee Championships: "It sucks to be a champion in a sport that can't get you laid." |

Have you ever heard me mention that I LOVE this product?
I think it's genius that they're adding a hot dog eating champion. I know it sounds crazy, but people WILL want his card. I'm not sure I'll collect Series B as aggressively as I have collected Series A, although, I might not be able to hold back. I was able to acquire the Clemente Cut Autograph card that's a 1/1 last week while away on vacation. What a beauty it is! |

As I'm sure all of you with Sportkings newsletters already know, they just announced that Mat Hoffman (BMX) and George Lemon (Harlem Globetrotters) are being included in Series B. I voted a few times for Hoffman and Tony Hawk, so that's pretty cool. I'm still waiting for another poker player to be in the set. So far I've voted for Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Chip Reese, Johnny Chan and TJ Cloutier (my first poker idol). Let's just say if any of these guys get in, it's almost a 100% because of my votes and e-mails, so I'm the guy you'll hate if you pull one and don't want to keep it (although I will also probably be the guy who buys the card if you decide to sell it!).
The really good news is that they announced four unbelievable cuts that are going to be inserted in packs: Walter Camp, Eugen Sandow, Alexander Cartwright, and JAMES NAISMITH!!!! I know Matt will be thrilled about this inclusion!! |
