Default Today i was kicked out of somewhere for trying to get Autographs...

Today i was kicked out of the Autzen/Mofsofshy area at the University or Oregon. I was getting autographs on 8x10's and was waiting for Kenjon Barner to some out from practice to get him to autograph my jersey. As i was waiting a older man who worked for the department of athletics told em that the team did not want people getting autographs as they were going to the media. I was appalled that they would kick out a true Duck fan (I was wearing a duck hat and shirt) because they thought i was going to sell the autographs? I am 16 so i don't look like i am going to sell them? The two players who did sign for me were Bryan Bennett (Going to be quarterback) and Josh Huff (wide receiver) Bennett signed his name and number without personalization and Josh Huff signed 2 pictures both with personalization. I feel that the university should just tell people to personalize everything or tell people no. I would rather be turned down by the player or get a personalized autograph rather than have some older man on a golf cart tell me that i cannot get autographs on public property. I guess i am just cheesed that the university would want employees acting in this manner. Rant over please let me know what you think. Also i am trying to decide if i should go abck and try to get the jersey signed and leave.

Hahahahahaha he wasnt a security officer he sits at the gate where practice is held and rides the cart. Last year they had no problem with it. As a matter of fact the sports card shop in Eugene would pay players $100-$400 to sign 8x10's mini helmets and balls after their eligibility was up. The players don't care its the University of Oregon. The players usually love getting asked for autographs Josh Huff personalized my 8x10's to em and even wrote Go Ducks he would have wrote anything if i would have asked him.

As a former employee in Major League Baseball....the gentleman had every right to kick you out.

There is nothing worse to a stadium official then an autograph stalker who just doesn't take hints...

I was stern with anyone who appeared over the age of 12. I mean...by that age folks should realize that these athletes are regular human beings just like you or I...

(Definitely NOT directed at the OP or anyone here...just speaking from experience.)

As kid (I think I was 11 or 12) I got to literally go down on floor level (by the players entrance) to get autographs at an Iowa basketball game.

I'm guessing if I tried that now they wouldn't be a fan of it.

Absolutely...at that age (and younger) it's fun to see kids light up when I would introduce them to players or let them stand on the field.

There just comes a time when its just creepy and weird seeing anyone over the age of 12 beg for autographs and the like...

Its sad that Oregon memorabilia is so overpriced or i would just buy it. I am a duck fan since birth and would buy it. I do know he had every right to but i was just steamed about it. Its not like i was handing them 10 8x10's or having everybody sign 4 full size team helmets. Most people who sell on ebay or dealers (I have seen this) Have a duffel bag full of mini helmets and footballs. I had a jersey and a binder with maybe 15 8x10's in it. Its not the fact that he kicked me out its the fact that he was so rude about it. Its sad that ebay and the selfishness of others has cause people to not be able to get autographs. I enjoy watching these guys in college and then move on to the NFL. Trust me if i had the contacts then i would have a personal signign with them but i dont have those numbers.

I'm 16 and do IP a lot at Fenway, seems like most of the security guards there feel the same way you do, especially out near the right field gate where the away team comes in.

I just do it for fun and it's cool getting to meet players I admire. Nothing creepy/weird about that.

Yeah i agree with the not creepy. Its not like im 45 and getting autographs You can either get autographs in person or hide behind a computer screen and collect autographs of somebody on a sticker placed on a piece of cardboard.

Sorry to partially hijack the OP's thread, but I gotta toss my two cents in. In general, if you're being polite to the players and collectors (especially kids) around you, there's nothing wrong with getting autographs, regardless if you're 8 or 75 or anywhere in between. I personally don't 'graph at hotels, and have stopped college 'graphing except for getting the Syracuse men's basketball team once per year. NCAA schools, especially the major ones, are paranoid about players making money off of their autographs (even more so since the Terrelle Pryor incident), and that's why they try to keep collectors away from practice, etc.

Autograph collecting as a whole, when done in the proper places (at the stadium, at signings, through the mail, etc.) is really a wholesome, fun activity. There's absolutely nothing "creepy" about asking guys (or gals) to write their name on cards or photos they're pictured on, and I take offense at those who "don't get it" trying to tell me I am. 'Graph on, my friends!

I appreciate your comment . I only go to practices, games and other team events. I do not go to hotels or ask if i see them at the mall or something. And to be honest i am one of the most courteous autograph seekers. In let little kids go ahead of me and i let others use my pen. I try to be helpful to everybody else getting autographs. I am actually on the younger (16) side of people getting autographs at games and after games. I see a lot of 30-40 year old getting autographs and i could care less. You can buy $100 boxes of cards with a sticker signed and attached to a piece of cardboard or you can go get the autographs yourself. Its your choice.
