Default Would you want Hitler's autograph?

The majority of custom cards i send out to get signed are to people other than athletes. As I talk with friends about people I've sent to or are thinking about sending to, I sometimes get people who ask "why in the world would you want that person's signature?" Sometimes they even get upset. (Think politics mainly)

So this leads to my question: If you could get it, would you want Hitler's autograph? What about Fred Phelp's?

There's a kind of philosophical twist to the question, so I'm interested to hear what people think.

In terms of historical genocidal dictators, I would have to say no to Hitler.

But I would say yes to Stalin - always found Soviet history fascinating in school. Love the cold war

No. I collect people who I want to collect, not insane radicals who murder millions.

I have a Charles Manson auto...love it. I kinda of look at the overall "historical" sense of things with autos like this...and not everything that goes on in the world is a good thing. Pop Culture doesn't just include the nice people.

We had a customer pull the FDR/Hitler Auto from Horrors of War.

We have a customer, who currently owns the Himmler from Horrors of War.

They are historical figures and important in the history of the world. Some will want them and some will detest those that do, both have great reasons.

Exactly my line of thinking. I'll be picking up my M.A. in History this May, so obviously I'm a big history guy and when I look around at the people creating history in the present day, not all of them are good.

I've got TTM of inventors of some of the most amazing discoveries and inventions of our time. Guys like Tom Mueller (one of the lead developers at SpaceX, the private space exploration company) and ladies like Jane Goodall. But then there are also people making history for all the wrong reasons. (Like Phelps)

We obviously haven't erased Hitler from our history books. In fact, we've condemned many German textbooks for scrubbing the Holocaust from their pages. The reason being that as humans it's important to remember and fully understand both our triumphs and our failures.

So I for one, would love to have Hitler's autograph. Not for personal enjoyment in the same sense that picking up a perfect 10 auto of a PC player makes me happy, but in the sense that this item would have an importance that transcended my own enjoyment. It would be less of a tribute or monument to the person and their horrible deeds and more of a warning sign.

But that's just me.

I have a Hitler autograph. I don't really think of owning it in a negative way.

Charles Manson would be sweet just for the whole pop culture aspect of it.

This is my opinion

A hitler auto would serve absolutely no purpose in my collection. I also don't like it when people obtain signatures from certain living Nazis. I feel that asking someone for their signature is a sign of respect. I have no respect for Nazis or anyone who committed or participated in genocide.

No on hitler. No on Fred phelps. Heck I wouldn't even want an Obama autograph. I collect either athletes or people I like and respect. I think owning a Hitler or a guy similar would be creepy and could not sleep at night with it in my possession. I do like American History though and it would be cool to own somebody important's autograph

If anyone actually has Phelps, I'd be disturbed
I'd rather have someone actually significant like Bill Gates.

I actually do have an Obama autograph I wrote to him when he was a senator, so it's probably fake but w/e. I'd love to have an Ed Miliband for sure.

Yeah, I got an autopen back on the custom I sent. From what I've read, unless you meet him in person, it's all autopen. *sad*

However, I do currently have a card out hoping Linus Torvalds (the Linux guy) will sign.

I feel that people should be free to collect whomever they want to collect. Owning autographs shouldn't be a measurement of that person's character and/or value to society. Judge them on kindness, compassion, generosity, and honesty, not on the contents of their autograph collection. I personally wouldn't want Hitler's autograph, but I don't have anything against people who do. You don't have to subscribe to the thoughts or beliefs of celebrities in order to find their autograph interesting. I have many autographs, from many different sports and fields, and the only one I can think of which people might be "disappointed in me" for owning is Rae Carruth. Having it doesn't mean I advocate someone putting a hit out on their pregnant girlfriend.

I remember back in elementary school this kids dad was straight from Germany and was a nazi soldier, and had a picture of himself with Hitler. Was a pretty cool guy though, collected comics and cards.

Google "Hitler paintings", he was an amazing artist. Just think if he went the art route instead of the... Well that route.

I see what you did there....

Like it or not, these are people entrenched in history forever. 200 years from now everyone will still know Hitler and Bin Laden. They both got what they had coming to them. Who in their right mind wouldn't want to own a piece of history that will live on forever....right or wrong...good or evil.

I personally just wouldn't want it. I understand that he is an extremely historic person, but he's just not a guy who I want something of his to show off. There are past figures like FDR and Winston Chruchill and even Napoleon who's autograph would be amazing to have, but if I ever came across an Adolf Hitler autograph, I just would not be able to keep it in my collection. Every time I'd see it, I'd just think of the horrible things he has done in his lifetime. Like someone said earlier in this thread, I see asking/collecting an autograph as a sign of admiration and respect. I do not, and I don't think anybody here, admires or respects Adolf Hitler.

I guarantee you that there are at least
14 million people who would sooner destroy a
Hitler autograph then allow it their house,
Thats assuming they dont destroy it on sight.

I have one in my house, it's a document also signed by two of his Generals, Von Blomberg(killed early in WWII and Von Fritsch). It's just a piece of everyday paperwork he read then signed a year and a half after becoming Chancellor- it's a promotion of one soldier to West Wall inspector while demoting another. Of all the stuff I have, people are always wanting to look at his stuff more than my 'good guy' artifacts! Of course they say that they feel creepy thinking it's more interesting to look at or hold something he held, instead of something like my John Hancock signature.http://

It's a fine line. While those people would probably enjoy destroying such an artifact, at the same I can guarantee you that they would not want his evil deeds to be forgotten or downplayed. The tricky thing about evil is maintaining perspective - not glorifying it, but always remembering the lessons we learned from it.
