Default stesurbarsa's TTM thread

All right, enough lurking. It's finally time to start my own TTM success thread.

Not much to report so far. Stone lock Pat Neshek and Elliot Johnson are my only two responses to date. I sent to EJ within a week of Atlanta picking him up from Kansas City, so the timing likely helped me there.

Looking back, I probably sent to bigger stars (e.g. Pedroia, Jeter) than I should have. I've since spent a fair bit of time reading the BO and SCF forums, I agree now that it makes more sense to target less popular players. Nevertheless, it's still kind of frustrating to send out all these letters and only get two responses. Particularly for the Blue Jays, thought I would have a much better return rate as they're my hometown team.

I went through all my old early '90's cards at my Mom/Dad's house over Christmas. My plan over the next month is to target retirees who are known to have sign lately, then hit up a big batch of current players for the start of Spring Training.

Welcome, happy new year.

Jeter doesn't sign at all.
Don't waste your postage with Jeter, he has a contact with Steiner, no way he'll sign a TTM (he did in 1995-1996 though)
Smart choice, send to the players you like that sign..best return rates

Word of advice: Jeter doesn't sign at all. You mentioned that you regret not sending to big name players like Jeter and Pedoria, you shouldn't, they don't sign at all (at least ℅ team)

I don't think he's saying he regrets not sending to more, but realizes that he shouldn't have sent to such big name guys.

Good luck, OP, and welcome to blowout!

I've gotten these three in 2013, Pettitte and Johnson back in February during ST and I got Burnett back in like... May or June.

It seems like you've written to a lot of Blue Jays, the only Jay I tried was Munenori Kawasaki and I didn't get anything back

Still no TTM returns, but I've sent out to these three guys in the past week:

Brad Arnsberg
Nicky Leyva
John Cangelosi

I've also been busy building a stack of requests to send out next month for Spring Training. So far I've got letters ready to go to:

Bob McClure
Robin Ventura
Mike Scioscia
Bud Black
Kyle Lotzkar
Carlos Santana
Edward Mujica
Anthony Rizzo
Jameson Taillon

One minor success to report this week, I did about a dozen various different NPN's last month, got my first one back yesterday. Panini Hometown Heroes Bernie Williams Homegrown Heroes black parrallel. Nothing spectacular but I'll take it! Nothing more exciting than racing home from work and opening the mailbox to find something there.

Today brought my first success in over a month. Opened the mailbox and quickly noticed the sweet sight of one of my Global Forever stamps!

Art Howe, 1/1 in just three weeks (not bad considering I'm from Canada), c/o home. Hopefully he enjoyed my letter where I bashed Philip Seymour Hoffman's performance in Moneyball.

I sent to these four within the last week:

Jack Morris
Dale Sveum
Bucky Dent
Jamie Moyer

Meanwhile, the stack of ready Spring Training requests grows higher by the day.

Received 2/2 from Team Canada manager and ex-Blue Jay Ernie Whitt last week. Will post pics later on.

In the meantime, here's a strange one. Got a TTM return from Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon McCarthy yesterday, only I opened up the envelop to find it was empty. What a sick tease!

The envelope didn't appear to be tampered with, so that sort of rules out any sort of postal worker theft.

They could've just forgotten to put the signed card in the envelope. But I think that's somewhat unlikely because both him and his wife each tweeted at me that they loved the personal letter I wrote:

So I'm at a bit of a loss, not sure what could've happened here. He clearly took the time to sign his cards, so it's not like he just kept the card and sent me back the empty envelope. He doesn't seem like that type, either.

Weird! Guess I now have a good story to write them back with this year.

That is strange...

Do you mind me asking what you wrote? I'm not gonna steal it or anything, just curios.

I usually just go onto their wikipedia pages or Twitter accounts to find common ground, to see if we went to the same university, grew up in the same town, etc. For him, I specifically remember talking about dogs and how my dog, a Labrador Retriever, is better breed of dog than the one he has.

I try and write something funny that will help distinguish my letters from others. Most of the time people will think I'm some sort of lunatic, but occasionally I will stumble upon someone that shares my unique sense of humor.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Finished sending out my batch of Spring Training autograph requests. I wrote 35 letters in total. Actually, technically I've only sent out 34. I haven't mailed Johan Santana's letter yet since he is still a free agent.

Several coaches sprinkled in. I tried to focus on less popular players who are known to have signed recently, hopefully that helps my success rate.

I just saw this morning that the Orioles released Liam Hendriks to make room for Ubaldo Jiminez. That's upsetting, feels like there's a good chance my request goes unanswered. Hopefully he sent it back already before leaving the team, as I did send it out quite early.

One thing I'm still uncertain on is who actually attends MLB spring training. Is it just guys on the 40-man active roster? If so, my requests to Kyle Lotzkar and Stryker Trahan are probably wasted. Hopefully they're hanging around the big camps right now and my letters end up in their hands.

I think my next batch will be a prospect batch to the Arizona Fall League once the 2014 Topps Heritage Minor set comes out.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I've had a few successes over the last month, will post pictures sometime this weekend:

Jim Leyland 2/4
Bucky Dent 1/1
Dale Sveum 1/1
Bobby Valentine 1/1
John Farrell 2/2

How long did the Leyland take? And is this the Dent address you used:
Bucky Dent
8895 Indian River Run
Boynton Beach, FL 33437
USA

I mailed out to Leyland on Dec-31-2013, received on Feb-7-2014. But I'm in Canada, so there's probably an extra day or two tacked onto either end. Overall very quick return.

Yes, that's the Dent address I used.

How do you deal with postage on the return letter, I am also in Canada and have never found a good answer to this.

I bought a few pages of "USA Global Forever" stamps when I was last in the states. They're good for first-class one-ounce international mail and are immune to rate increases. Each stamp set me back about $1.10 each.

If you're not close to a border crossing, I'm sure you can find them online, or I bet the USPS will even mail you some if you call them.

So yeah, it's not that cheap. You have to pay more to send the letters and to get them back. Whatever, guess it's one of the tradeoffs we have to make for living in a country with free healthcare.

A few more successes this week.

Jamie Moyer x2, c/o home
James Paxton, c/o Seattle Mariners spring training
Quintin Berry, c/o Baltimore Orioles spring training
Jordan Pacheco, c/o Colorado Rockies spring training

Pacheco came back a bit smudged. I didn't prep the card at all though, lesson learned. We'll see what happens with the rest of my requests, many of them are 2013 Topps Series 1 or 2. Makes me really appreciate the texture of the Heritage series, I'm going to send try and send those out exclusively in the future.

One failure to report. Padres manager Bud Black returned all three of my cards unsigned and didn't even bother to seal my SASE envelope. Thankfully his cards came on the same day as Moyer/Paxton/Berry, otherwise I'd be a bit more upset!
