Depends on the quality of paper, I've had problems sometimes with cheap glossy paper causing the ink to streak like on an unprepped card. If I ever have the chance I generally try for matte which I think almost always works out perfectly with the ink. Because it's like softer paper, the ink really sticks to it well and I've never had smudging or streaking problems. The only thing though is that matte photos don't "pop" as much as glossy, glossy might look better and shinier compared to the rather dull matte.

So, assuming the paper quality is equally good, it's really up to whether you want a good signature on shiny paper, or just more normal paper.

Glossy if from a company like wal mart or costco. Matte looks terrible, if you print from home I agree the gloss isn't a good option

Lustre or Matte. Plus every wannabe dealer around has a nice stack of cheap Glossy photos taken from Google

To each their own though!

I've removed personalizations and stray marks (sharpie, paint pen, and other metallic markers) from matte and lustre 8x10s before.

Paint pen may leave a bit of a mark though depending on how much of it leaked.
