Default Advice Needed - 2004 Red Sox Signed Ball Collection

Hello All!

I'm new to TTM, and I am looking to collect all 25 players on the roster for the 2004 Red Sox WS run + Terry Francona. I don't mind if they are TTM or IP because this is a personal collection. So, two questions....

1. Does anyone have any advice on getting a TTM ball by any of these players? Past experience?
2. Any advice on shipping a ball TTM? Do I pay for return postage and put it in a box inside a box? Just wondering what the best practice for TTM balls is!

Thanks! Any advice would be very helpful!

1. Johnny Damon – CF
2. Mark Belhorn – 2B
3. Manny Ramirez – LF
4. David Ortiz – DH
5. Jason Varitek – C
6. Trot Nixon – RF
7. Kevin Millar – 1B
8. Bill Mueller – 3B
9. Orlando Cabrera – SS
10. Doug Mientkiewicz 1B
11. Pokey Reese 2B
12. Doug Mirabelli C
13. Dave Roberts PR
14. Gabe Kapler RF
15. Curt Schilling
16. Pedro Martinez
17. Bronson Arroyo
18. Derek Lowe
19. Curt Leskanic
20. Ramiro Mendoza
21. Tim Wakefield
22. Alan Embree
23. Mike Timlin
24. Keith Foulke
25. Mike Meyers
26. Terry Francona

Where do you get 2004 WS balls at at decent price? All I find is $30 per ball.

Typically for baseballs I'll send it in a bubble mailer inside another larger bubble mailer. Yes you pay return postage and I typically provide a pen when I send it out too. I've gotten Dave Roberts on cards before TTM.

I don't think he said WS balls, just that WS team on balls.

Yes, you send your ball and return package with paid postage. Some guys just use the padded envelopes that you can get the ball and/or box in. Some put baggies in there to wrap the ball, or paper to pad it. All kinds of options.

Check some other sites for TTM return successes. I know Damon signs at paid signings, not sure about TTM. Francona you might be able to get via a 50/50 or consignment in ST.

That would be an amazing project with some big names. Good luck with it!

Thanks for the advice! Im glad I asked, I was planning on sending a box within a box but if I can just send a bubble mailer, that will be much cheaper. I wasnt sure how they would hold up with the weight of the ball though.

So I'm going to send out a wave of TTM tomorrow to:

Trot Nixon
Mark Belhorn
Mike Timlin
Dave Roberts

Does anyone have any advice on these guys? I found the TTM manager on SCF, but any successful addresses you guys might have would be greatly appreciated!

On another note, since this is a personal project, I don't mind using cheap non-ROMLB balls. Does anyone have a recommended ball to use? Do any of them hold ink particularly well? What about pens - I prefer the look of a blue ball point pen, is there a particular pen that you guys think works better than others?

Thanks!

Even if it's a personal project I wouldn't use anything but Official Major League Baseballs. All of the other ones have a tendency to bleed and if you plan to have these for a long time that's what I would do. As for pens, I have had really good luck with just the cheap blue ballpoint pens (bic or papermate) that you can get just about at any store.

I sent out a dozen balls a few years ago in bubble mailers and they all came back in perfect condition.

ROLB1's with Staedtler blue pens (fine or superfine) may be a good alternative. Though if you need to buy a Staedtler pen with every ball you are sending, it really negates much of the savings.

Doug Mientkiewicz is currently the manager for the Chattanooga Lookouts, perhaps you could get someone in the Southern League to take a ball on consignment for you?

The easiest way to do a ball TTM is to use a #0 padded mailer as your SASE and a #2 padded mailer to send it out. I usually also include a pen and put the ball in a ziplock bag in case the pen explodes in transit.

Good luck!

That is actually REALLY helpful, Mienktkiewicz is actually the ball I am looking for now! Might as well try to send one to the stadium, thanks a lot!

So that's the route I have been going for shipping and it seems to work great. I put 6 forever stamps on the RT envelope and 8 on the bigger envelope and I haven't had any problems.

Pretty cool! I'd be so worried that I'd get to a few left and it would get lost in the mail or not sent back or something. I was wondering about sending balls though too. I might try Moncada whenever he makes it to Greenville.

edit: Oh wait you're getting them each on individual balls! I thought it was like a team ball thing. lol. Definitely much safer in the mail that way.
