Default FS: 1953 Satchel Paige CLEAN / MINT?

Card was pulled during a show many years ago where packs from an unopened 1953 Topps Box were individually sold. It's been in its holder ever since and was only recently brought out of storage.

I don't have any experience with grading vintage cards, so all I can do is describe the card to the best of my ability and show you some pictures. I will say this: I haven't seen a nicer one in terms of overall condition.

Corners are sharp and clean to the naked eye. Color is great. Card looks freshly pack pulled. No scratches, bleeds, or ink spots. Left to right centering looks 50/50. Edges look like fresh edges from that era of card: the cuts aren't perfectly smooth, but there is no chipping or lifting that I can see.

Asking $4200

An iconic card of the player for whom my first son is named.

Thanks for looking!

Beautiful raw card but at a steep price. You may be better off getting closer to that price if you sent it off to get graded.

I don't know a lot about grading on cards like these. Are there half grades? Does it have a shot at a 9? I'm not a member of PSA anymore. I've been using Beckett because I do a lot of contemporary autographed stuff.

I figure it has a decent shot at a 9 given that it came fresh from a pack and hasn't been handled since. Should I send it into BVG?

Card looks really nice and has great centering and sharp corners, could be a 9. SGC or BVG is the way to go with vintage cards. Here is a thread that a member started discussing which is better for a vintage card.

PSA or SGC?

Looks off center top to bottom. Just get it graded with PSA. Worth paying the $40-$50 with shipping for a fast return service.

Agreed - send it off to PSA

You will not get 4200 raw or even close

A PSA 7 recently sold for almost $900

Yours is off centered top to bottom, but may still grab a 9, and I would think certainly an 8 or 8.5.

If it comes back a 9 you may get more than $4200

What are 8 and 8.5s going for?

At any rate, I filled out a PSA non-member form and am having it Super Express 2-day graded. It goes in tomorrow. Thanks for the tips.

Yes. Excellent card. Well worth getting graded.
I'll be waiting to see what it comes back at.
Best of luck.

No. Haven't even gotten an email confirmation. They said they are running a few days behind entering things into their system.

What's the point of mailing 2 day and getting 2 day service if they have the card in their possession for ten days without getting it logged in?

I called them and they received the card. Almost a week ago now.

Frustrating.

Yeah their turnaround times are a complete joke. I read stories all the time where someone will do a 45 day sub and it will pop in 10 days and then there are plenty of instances like yours. It's just ridiculous how random things are with their turnaround times.

Make sure you write the service level you are paying for on the box. It can speed up the process if you have a submission that is 2 or 5 days.

I did. It was like super express or something?

Still haven't even gotten an email. I'm going to phone again today.

Yes. PSA said it was trimmed. BVG gave it a 7 thanks to some chipping on the back of the card not evident in the pics taken before I sent the card into Beckett for grading.

The card came directly from an unopened 1953 pack purchased at auction. The card has been in Lucite in a safe deposit box ever since -- over 25 years.

I compared my card to PSA 8s I've seen online and there is no comparison: mine is brighter, cleaner, and has far superior corners and surface.

What's so galling is that you have to believe a 60 year-old card with immaculate surface and color somehow managed to also have corners bad enough that they needed trimming, even assuming anyone I know would know how to do such a thing.

They probably wanted me to spend an additional $93 on a regrade.

The whole thing is a scam, in my opinion. I have never seen a cleaner example of this card.

Looking at the back long edges compared to the lines of the screw down I "think" that I am seeing a Diamond Cut?

Did you pull the card yourself?

If BGS gave it a 7 more than likely the centering got a 6-6.5 but the rest of the card could have been 8-9 sub grades. They don't change their grading much even for vintage, just don't label sub grades. If you wanted to try to spend a few bucks you might think about SGC. Still an awesome card!

Did you actually witness the card being pulled out of the pack or did you pull it yourself?

Agree it is definitely the centering that kept it out of an 8 or better holder. It's still a nice card and 7 seems right with the centering being off top to bottom.

I might try SGC. Before that, though, I might have it RCRed in Chicago.
