Default PSA or BVG....Yogi Berra Rookie

So I got this RCR a few years ago at the National and am trying to decide if I should just have Beckett slab it or get it graded by PSA. I was also thinking maybe getting it graded by SGC

What do you think? I am most likely not going to get rid of this card unless I am completely blown away by an offer, so the grading is mostly for asthetic purposes.

PSA card holders are ugly. If you are getting it slabbed solely for aesthetic purposes, SGC holders are by far and away the best looking because of their nice black background.

For a card like that: PSA > SGC > BVG

If you honestly aren't selling it ever, just put it in the BGS slab since its already passed their authentication process and their holders by far and away seem to protect cards the best. Anyone outside of someone who doesn't trust Beckett to properly authenticate a vintage card who would suggest a PSA holder for long term storage is nuts. I have eyewitnessed many high grade PSA cards chip or snag along the edges of PSA holders. Cards are wayyyy too loose in there. I wouldn't trust any PSA 8, 9 or 10 vintage cards current condition that I couldn't see in person.

SGC all they way.
PSA has the worst holders of the three as far as protection goes.

While I won't lie that I'm hardly a grading expert...

Why do people hate PSA cases so much?

In reality 99% of cards will be just fine in top loaders if not messed around with and stored correctly - and PSA cases are obviously nicer then Top Loaders.

PSA holders don't really have any more movement then a magnetic case and people with modern day cards swear by those.

I'm not really suggesting any of the 3 - I guess I'm just curious why people don't like PSA cases - BVG are like bricks to me as far as storage. I'm not familiar with SGC.

I guess I consider Top Loaders/Magnetics fine for 99% of cards - so PSA seems just as good as those.

But like I said I'm not an expert by any stretch.

I really like the PSA holders, I don't like how bulky the BVG and BGS holders are

PSA holders are more susceptible to cracking and causing damage to the card, from my personal experience as I have cards that slide around in their PSA holders. I agree that BVG cases are built to last and I like the way they look the best, but I prefer SGC to BVG right now, because they sell better and have a registry. Beckett is supposed to relaunch their registry fairly soon, so I'll more than likely be switching back to BVG when they get that up and running.

The OP said he was not planning on selling the card, and therefore doesn't care about the impact of grading the card on its value.

-If grading/reselling isn't an issue, either BVG or SGC. Unless i am misremembering, BVG will place your card in a sealed plastic sleeve before slabbing. PSAs are more susceptible to crack and clouding, and i've seen plenty that let the card move.

If you want to resell, PSA.

Good luck.

I must respectfully disagree...a good rule of thumb is SGC for anything from '52 or older, Beckett for modern chrome, auto'd, and game used, and psa for everything in between. Regardless of what color slab you like, one day down the road you may have to sell the card, and without a doubt in my mind this Yogi Berra will ALWAYS fetch more money and appeal to more higher end collectors if it is slabbed with SGC.
