Question Tips for buying ungraded vintage?

I've been sticking to only buying PSA graded cards via ebay lately, but often times there are few examples of a particular card. Scanners seem to hide a number of defects. How do you go about determining if a card is worth buying unslabbed?

I've grown increasingly anti-psa over the years...I've seen cards submitted cracked open and resubmitted multiple times sometimes getting a different grade each time! There is no rhyme or reason to the consistency between their team of graders. You could be paying for a 7 when there's a 5 that looks just as good, if not better. Remember, buy the card, not the grade. It all comes down to eye appeal, if you like the way it looks then snag it, whether it's raw or not In my opinion your best bet is to buy raw cards. There are quite a few reputable set break sellers that you'll start to see offering cards over and over again and they provide high-res scans of their cards. Save them on your ebay favorite sellers list and have fun!

Basically find a few online seller that you can trust and just buy from them. If the price on a vintage card seems too good to be true, it probably is. Anyone who knows how to grade will put Ex-mt, NrMt, Ex, etc. If they put the "i'm not a professional grader" line in their description, I'd avoid them.
