Default 1948 Leaf Babe Ruth

Anybody know how to spot a '48 Leaf Ruth Reprint other than the red line between the border and shoulders? I've looked around and it seems most reprints have the red line there, but I've also seen some graded by SGC and PSA that have the red line that were marked authentic. I included a few scans of my card below.

Yeah when I found it, I thought to myself it almost looks too good to be real.

-I never trust scans for this sort of determination. A couple points that i hope are helpful:

~Some of the 49's (a very small percentage) containing red lines are said to be authentic, but i've never seen a Ruth that turned out to be.

~An in-person exam should focus on the feel of the card, blacklight comparison to known originals, and the tone and coloration of the jersey versus the border of the card.

Those are the only hallmarks i know of for this card, it's been years since i looked into it.

Good luck.

lobo_hacker, hoping to acquire a Stan Musial from this set one day

Thanks lobo_hacker. I think I'm just going to send it in to PSA and hope for the best.

The 3 PSA's currently listed on auction do NOT have the red lines on the side.

I checked my 2010 Standard Catalog of Babseball Cards and it doesn't mention a print variation of the Babe Ruth card. The set did go through a 2nd printing that eliminated cards from the print run, and serveral other cards do have variations.

Cool. I hope it's real. It should get a very good grade.

I think PSA is usually considered best for vintage cards.

My guess is a reprint, but the scans are a little dark.

I say when buying cards like this just pay a little extra for a graded copy. Peace of mind

So I decided to send this in as part of a group submission through Beckett. I chose Beckett over PSA/SGC due to the fact that the submission fee was pretty cheap and I wasn't 100% sure on the authenticity of the card. Card came back as Authentic Altered, reason for altered grade was shaved edge/trimmed corner on the top two corners on the front. I personally thought the corners were a little worn due to old age, but it guess I'm wrong. Either way I'm happy with the fact that it came back authentic.

Glad to see it is authentic. Very nice card, even though it got the altered grade.

I'm guessing you picked it up on the cheap, so congrats on the authenticity. I recently bought a collection of 80's-90's cards (a few mediocre rookie cards, a few semi decent rarer 90's inserts. There was a random early 1950's Bowman Football star card (I think it books $200 or so in Beckett NM). Has some wear, and when I looked at it initially I assumed fake. I've passed it two more times in a box behind the counter, and I am convincing myself to at least show scans here. because it is looking a little more real each time to me. Nowhere near on the level of a 48 Leaf Ruth, but again, I have the same curiosities and want to look into it (I consider it a free card since I bought it in a bulk 80's-90's buy).
