Default Mantle in a Pawn Shop

Found this Mantle in a pawn shop. The guy wants $900.
What if it's trimmed? What if it's some kind of copy?
I'm not touching it. Just thought I'd share.
Also, the card surface is fine. The scratches are on the screwdown that it is in.

Hope the pictures worked. New at this site.

Smart move. Looks like all the above of your list of concerns.

Way overpriced, but if it was a decent price, the only thing I'd be concerned about is the apparent moisture and the card sticking to the screwdown.

-At that price point, you can safely stop asking questions and move on, legit or no. But those screw downs can be hell on a card if it ain't a repro.

I had a reprint of this card that didn't say reprint anywhere on it. Can't remember where I got it, but when I was younger I thought it was real. Then I learned how to tell what to look at to tell the difference.

Pawn shops are generally the worst sources for collectibles and they overprice everything at both sticker price and upon initial inquiry, it's the name of their game. Everything is negotiable 'tho, so you can probably work the price down to something that's fair. Just look on eBay, do a "completed auction sold" search, and determine a somewhat recent and fair market value from that. The Pawn Shops do that all the time to estimate values and what they pay for items (fractionally of course, as they need to make profit to pay employees, rent and run a business)

If it's a legit shop and the owner is friendly, you can introduce the idea of... "IF" he were able to let you submit the card for grading, and it not come back "altered", so forget about the grade, you assume the risk of whatever grade it gets, all you're looking for is a guarantee it's authentic and not altered, you'll pay "X" for the card. If it comes back "altered" then he gets the card back and you get your money back.

$900 gets you a beautiful graded copy. A well centered, clean PSA 3.5 jjust sold for something like $400. $900 is absurd for that card.

Your preaching to the choir my man, trust me most everyone on this site knows how to determine a fair market value.

Yeah, I know the value. My concern is trimmed or reprint.
I'm not messing with this card. Just sharing.

Though I might bring up the "if" idea. Might try that next week.

You can take it a step further and say

IF it grades at X, you will pay $ ___

IF it grades at Y, you will pay $ ___

And so forth, so you settle on the fair price you want to offer, and have contingency strings attached, with the first one being, it must be authentic, otherwise the deal is off the table. Then, if it grades "Higher than X" you can give him an incentive if that's needed as part of the price negotiation.

Its funny how people will buy a Beckett and look up a card and stick the highest price on the card. They don't factor everything in. Not all old baseball cards in bad grade are worth a fortune. That Pawn Shop might of paid $250.00 for it and were thinking they would make a ton on it. They are in for a surprise lol.

such a shame but only vintage I touch now is if it is graded

when I sell non-graded I have to overly exaggerate condition in seller's favor so there is no complaining afterwards (even if I post numerous pictures)

I'm doing the set, 900 is very steep. In a 5 is 600 to 700. I need a 5 still
