What's Buzz-worthy: I think you had to be there to appreciate this one more as the first Score set in 1989 was one of a few newcomers to the NFL ranks that helped usher in a new feel of football cards and a flood of even more companies on the gridiron. This second release from Score included some interesting touches you can see here in the subsets and rookies in college uniforms. (And a few other Rookie Cards of players who were veterans but hadn't had cards before ... no RC logos needed here as the same definition of today was in play back then.) ... I recently grabbed a mystery box of old football packs with some simple, Throwback Thursday-style retro Buzz Breaks of single packs in mind but it turned out to be a box of several packs from about five products in just a couple of years -- my prime NFL years, really, back in the day, but, overall, the box was a fail. ... Who's in this first of two series in packs? Big Rookies back then were Andre Ware, Cortez Kennedy, Blair Thomas, Junior Seau, Rodney Hampton and others ... most of whom are mostly commons now. (This series offers an early look at them with Series 2 having pro-uni looks -- and even more with biggest names like Emmitt Smith in the Score Supplemental boxed set). This one is really about veterans and Hall of Famers -- and there are no insert cards to chase, no autographs or anything else ... just base cards and the trivia cards that can/will damage some cards here inside the baggie wrappers that also don't help. This one is stacked with guys who are Hall of Famers now with factory sets and packs/boxes easily found. Why? Do the math ... if three packs get you 48 cards and only 330 in a set ... then there's a lot of stuff out there and not a lot of reasons to rip -- and that was apparent to me even back in 1990 ... I ripped boxes and cases of Pro Set instead since it had chase cards.
Product Grade: B- (probably would grade better back then)
Lot Grade: B+ (back then finding Montana would have been a big deal)
Fun Grade: C-
