Chase color (Green foil) autograph (1) – Jared Kelley autographed Julio Rodriguez 2022 Topps Living Set card (/10)
What's Buzz-worthy: A lot of the Topps-tied artists have bought extra copies of their work and turned them into side projects and after this Living Set artist's tweet for a Black Friday sale caught my attention I finally have landed a version of my favorite Living Set card of the year via his release. What is the 2022 Jared Kelley Artist Signature Collection? It's a pack with just one signed card (using a foil pen) from the artist for the player of your choosing (if it's available) and the chase comes in which color is inside the blind-wrapped box -- Black (/50), Silver (/25), Chase (/10, color varies), Red (/10) or Gold (/5). Why does it matter? Well, the Chase is where if a person collects a group of 10 players in that color they can land an original one-of-a-kind piece of art hand-painted by the artist on a Living Set box (typically around a $250 piece based on similar items in his store). These packs are $40 on the site but I bit with a $30 sale price since the J-Rod card (/9,848 total made by Topps) is a popular one that sells very well on its own and I still hadn't grabbed one in any form. (Other players presently live include another favorite of mine this year, Roger Maris, along with Josh Gibson, Jeremy Peña and Edwin Diaz.) The chase is one that adds some fun to a nicely priced item -- for some reason a number of artists often charge far more for signed editions and I've not bit on any before this -- and if a collector orders more than one pack then finding a rarer tier is apparently guaranteed. I liked landing this color as it feels like the perfect accent on a Mariners card though I have a feeling all could be pretty striking with the foil pen used. Will I chase the run of Greens here? Probably not, but I do see others I have missed from the past that I will be on the lookout for. One player who popped up over on eBay -- a player not as popular as the reigning American League Rookie of the Year -- had some strong asking prices and at least one big sale. That made me like this find of mine even more.
Product Grade: A+ (good card, modest price, fun chase)
Box Grade: A
