What's Buzz-worthy: I skipped this higher-priced, no-hit-guaranteed blaster since those two variables are important to me -- and I know that college stuff will dip later, too, as the retail shelves are still full in my area ... and my area likes college football. I did grab a couple of these with the extras in this version of the box at a discounted price and, well, I like it ... but only at the discounted price as it just didn't deliver enough oomph had I paid more. Was it a bad box? No. Was it a monster box? Probably not ... but I did like it and its counterpart you'll see here soon. The basic set is just two tiers in this one with some autos possible and a small lineup of inserts here with modest parallels possible in this format. We won't be seeing a boatload more college releases like this with the CLC licensing to change hands, but this one is as strong of a college release as we have seen with a lot of color and energy and better crops and emphasis of photos in some spots here. (It's unlike Prizm where everything seems to be distant full-body photos for whatever reason. This one at least has those ... and more.) The feel is deluxe here but college stuff will always take a seat behind the full-on pro releases and I'm not sure anything would change that part ... even I struggle here as I want one school for sure and then some stars here and there but not a lot of the guys found in these on unis I don't know. (That's perhaps a lot of people.) Long-term, the values on most stuff here will fade but there aren't as many college releases so at least these will stand out vs. a barrage of NFL stuff with the same guys year after year. Once the prices start to settle -- or places start to burn off boxes like this to make room for a new year's or other lines -- I think a release like this is one to rip in volume or just for fun. Why? I'm a collector who doesn't mind the college game ... and there are some soon-to-be-drafted NIL guys in here, too, who don't yet have pro teams so that will extend its interest a little more.
Product Grade: A (retail version grade ... I won't open hobby unless it dips more)
Box Grade: B (I like that everything is a parallel -- color looks better than silver base ... but some cards with damage issues)
Fun Grade: B (good mix ... just not the best mix of names in better spots)
