What's Buzz-worthy: This one's early preview images showed what I thought was base cards -- those ended up being the Green parallels -- so when I ripped into a pack of this one for the first time I was actually surprised by the fact that this 1990-1991 mashup of old Score designs has white borders. In this case, that really works as Score was not about that at all back in the day. Perhaps it's the old-timer mentality here or landing some oldschool icons such as Joe Montana or John Elway, but this one felt right as a new collectable with throwback touches. You know what I think could help it? A better box design -- one that makes it look less like some 1980s Sears catalog or industrial manual and more like a modern retro (but more modern) release ... because it really is. I'm no big fan of 1990 or 1991 Score -- bought plenty, loathed plenty a year or two later -- but this one packs all kinds of inserts into every box (same total as last year) with nods to 1989, too, and that gives it the modern feel but with a lot of variety and feels of past cards with designs one can imagine being form the past (because some are). You can land ink here as well as some rarer pulls but typically Score blasters have included a numbered card per blaster in most recent years ... so if you land a key name there's always a chance at something here. ... Just like last year, these boxes pack plenty of cards in only a few packs -- I like that move as bigger packs protect cards better -- and the base set works in past stars among the first 300 with the last 100 players being rookies. It's not the crispest package of stuff but I have definitely seen rougher boxes with higher prices attached. As a collector, I'll probably dabble here more, though the Walmart prices on these was a little stiff. If you like this one and want a bigger bite, hit the link pop top for a lot more and guaranteed hits. If it dips, I might.
