What's Buzz-worthy: This one is very niche -- a set that perhaps aims to pull some of the dedicated older vintage (pre-war and more) collectors into some modern flash with "re-imagining" top names from top sets in the past on new cards with various colorful foilboard textures and designs. The base set here is only 800 copies per card and this box included one of everything from each tier (parallel) save for the rarest (/25 for Tier 8) -- but instead I landed a cut auto from a name that has a firm place in MLB history. At first, I thought I had an auto of Ray Chapman -- the only player killed by a beanball in MLB history during a game -- but I knew the Chapman name from somewhere else. While he was a four-time All-Star and a World Series winner as a member of the 1932 Yankees, Ben Chapman has an ugly place in the history of the game. He was the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies who openly heckled and taunted Jackie Robinson with ugly racist comments that led some to call for his suspension from MLB. (A perhaps somewhat-sanitized take on it can be seen in the film 42 where he was played by Alan Tudyk here.) In 1972, Robinson told TV host Dick Cavett "Ben Chapman was perhaps the most vicious of any of the people in terms of name calling. ... He was quite vicious ... wasn't only vicious as far as black people are concerned. I think he was anti-everything." Now, obviously this isn't the kind of autograph I'd seek out, but it being a negative in the game's history doesn't make it an unimportant one. His place with the Yankees and a championship actually looks to have bolstered his value a bit more than I would have expected, too. Cut autos here are one in 11 boxes (the boxes incorrectly say packs instead of boxes) so this box beat the odds and the product grade, for me, shows how there are some strong cuts and other finds here that give this one potential for fireworks at a lower box price (a case, as available at the link above should include at least one cut, maybe two) and more. Yes, the base cards can be funky but some big names have a few cards in the set and that means they can pop up across the tiers as well as via other rarer parallels (/4) and printing plates. Also in here are buyback vintage cards, handwriting sample cut cards and more -- and all of the various inclusions, should appear in every case based on the odds -- and you can see the cuts list there, too. I landed this as part of a bundle with a really low price to make it low-risk and the cut makes that a win atop all cards here being relatively rare volumes. Would I try it again? Maybe ... there are some big autos that could be in there and even handwriting sample cards would be a fun find, too.
Product Grade: B (a jam-packed take on some top names from the past via artwork from old sets)
Box Grade: A+ (beat the odds and got a card with a story)
Fun Grade: B+ (every card here has an announced volume, which helps one realize what's what)
