Buzz Buys ... A LOT: Exploring some vintage NBA
This entry was posted on April 15, 2024
.Buzz buys a lot of stuff these days and for a few reasons, really. Sometimes it's just bargain-hunting, sometimes it's just something that strikes me. And other times it's a lot -- a group of things -- and that has happened enough lately I figured I'd try something different as a regularly appearing item. Sometimes my lots will be wins, sometimes they won't be ... but I'll let you decide.

DIGGING UP ONE GEM?
The Lot: A lot of nine 1975-76 Topps NBA stars
The Price: About $11
Keep reading for more on this one ...
What's The Deal? This small lot of past NBA notables includes some Hall of Fame presence and, generally, multi-player stars in past sets like these are criminally overpriced, despite being arguably rarer than other sports back then. Or, to say it another way, you're a lot more likely to find baseball and football cards from these years than basketball out there in the wild ... and yet prices can be more reasonable than you might think for the names in play. The main cards of the biggest names in top conditions, though, can be money ... but this lot struck me as fine for the price but one card leapt out at me.
What's The Steal? The scoring leaders card above looks like a high-grade contender to me and it absolutely will make its way into a grading order with me. It was 100-percent the reason I grabbed this lot, though there are a good number of strong names here, too.

The Lot Details ...
Notables: "Downtown" Freddie Brown, Calvin Murphy, Cazzie Russell, San Diego Sails leaders, Washington Bullets leaders (Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes), field goal leaders (Artis Gilmore, Moses Malone), Kentucky Colonels team card (Artis Gilmore, Dan Issel), Utah Stars team leaders (Moses Malone), scoring leaders (George McGinnis, Julius Erving) and others, too. There are a few Hall of Famers in here for sure ... and that also, to me, makes this simple and cheap lot a win and it's an example where you can collect notables on the cheap, too. Ultimately this stuff is alllll about condition -- but it only takes one to make a lot a winner.
Rookie Cards: The Moses Malone appearances here are from the same year as his RC ... so, technically, they are RCs, too, though most collectors prefer the main card. Same with Bobby Jones.
Bottom Line: I'm grading two and maybe three of the scoring leaders cards at some point with the Erving getting priority. A least two of them in a decent mark would easily make this lot a win.
