Buzz Buys ... A LOT: Going big with Panini Golden Age Exhibits

Buzz buys a lot of stuff these days and for a few reasons, really. Sometimes it's just bargain-hunting, sometimes it's just something that strikes me. And other times it's a lot -- a group of things -- and that has happened enough lately I figured I'd try something different as a regularly appearing item. Sometimes my lots will be wins, sometimes they won't be ... but I'll let you decide.

RECENT RETRO II
The Lot: Eight Exhibit box-toppers from 2013 Panini Golden Age
The Price: Under $15

Keep reading for more on this one ...

What's The Deal? These are found one per box as a wrapped box-topper in this Panini America brand that meshed sports with pop culture and historic notables. It showcased the newsmakers back in the day on a variety of cardboard styles reminiscent of back then, too. These are more postcard-sized cards and are an ode to a style of cards sold via vending machines by the Exhibit Supply Company for decades back in the 1900s for a variety of sports and many other subjects. Since Golden Age is a catch-all, even this small lot includes some variety from what's a 40-card set -- that's two cases to build the set if the collation is perfect -- and they're only in hobby boxes.

What's The Steal? The Tatum O'Neal card being in this small lot twice was the win -- a single copy can at times cost almost as much as this lot -- and that was pretty much my sole reason for grabbing this one. Some other notables in the set include Jim Thorpe, Jane Russell, Evel Knievel, John Belushi, Bo Derek, Harry Houdini, Lana Turner, Grace Kelly, Abraham Lincoln, Sugar Ray Leonard and then some baseball legends on cards showcasing some strong photos.

Anything Missing? Nah ... this is a lot, not a set or near-set situation.

The Lot Details ...

Notables on base cards – None (not base cards)

Insert cards: 8 (all in gallery below)
Exhibit box-toppers (8)
– Tatum O'Neal (aka Amanda Whurlitzer from The Bad News Bears), Apollo 11, Alan Hale (aka The Skipper Jonas Grumby on Gilligan's Island), Harry Truman, Walter Hagen, Jan Stephenson

Bottom Line:
The two O'Neal cards are strong and the price here was good enough to bite on the lot even though I probably already have everything here -- two more of those at this price got me and would get me every time at less than $2 a card. The other years of this brand's three-year run have varying styles of toppers -- some with hits -- and then box-bottom cards, too, but this set was my favorite of them.
