Buzz Buys ... A LOT of 1991 Action Packed NFL football cards

Buzz buys a lot of stuff these days and for a few reasons, really. Sometimes it's just bargain-hunting, sometimes it's just something that strikes me. And other times it's a lot -- a group of things -- and that has happened enough lately I figured I'd try something different as a regularly appearing item. Sometimes my lots will be wins, sometimes they won't be ... but I'll let you decide.

GOOD AS GOLDEN
The Lot: An album of 1991 Action Packed NFL Series 1 football cards
The Price: $9.99

The Tease: What you see above is really the key here for this first Buzz Buys lot item. Why? Well, while the special cards seen above aren't all that pricey they're not all that commonly found. That wasn't the case this time, though ...

Keep reading for more on this one ...

What's The Deal? I found an album of 1991 Action Packed cards on the cheap and it included the full set of basic cards for the first series but was lacking 10 embossed braille cards that are part a factory set. Ultimately, the only other chases here are  a promo card and some conference logo cards ... nothing really all that remarkable. Well except for one other thing ... we'll get to that. That said, these embossed cards that are iconic in their time still are among my favorites at times from the era and some of my favorite cards ever made come from some of these early 1990s creations.

What's The Steal? That one other thing? Also tucked into this album here were nine of the 42 cards made as a pseudo-parallel set (different card numbers, so not a parallel set) where the cards' gold foil stamping was replaced by gold leaf stamping. Back then, this was a big deal. Now? Probably not so much ... but they're still not something found in every wax box of this one.

Anything Missing? Nothing in the basic set was missing this time.

The Lot Details ...

Notables on base cards – Andre Reed, Deion Sanders, Andre Reed, Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas, Mike Singletary, Ozzie Newsome, Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, John Elway, Barry Sanders, Don Majkowski (Remember him? A common but I threw him in.), Warren Moon, Derrick Thomas, Marcus Allen, Bo Jackson, Willie "Flipper" Anderson (Surprise!), Dan Marino, Phil Simms, Lawrence Taylor, Randall Cunningham, Reggie White, Rod Woodson, Junior Seau, Ronnie Lott, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Cortez Kennedy, Vinny Testaverde, Art Monk

Rookie Cards (3) – Nobody of note these days.

Insert cards: 9 (all in gallery below with some base)
24K Gold (9) – Andre Rison, Andre Reed, Boomer Esiason, Bobby Humphrey, Sterling Sharpe, Cleveland Gary, Herschel Walker, Dave Meggett, Vinny Testaverde

Bottom Line: This set was a favorite of mine back in the day with a number of nicely framed photos and then the embossing to make them extra interesting. For the price, I would have pondered buying the set on its own -- the Golds just made it a no-brainer with a couple names in there who would have been huge deals back in the day.
