Buzz Buys ... A LOT: One built by a dedicated WWE DVD buyer

Buzz buys a lot of stuff these days and for a few reasons, really. Sometimes it's just bargain-hunting, sometimes it's just something that strikes me. And other times it's a lot -- a group of things -- and that has happened enough lately I figured I'd try something different as a regularly appearing item. Sometimes my lots will be wins, sometimes they won't be ... but I'll let you decide.

GET IN THE RING ... ONE DVD AT A TIME
The Lot: 30-plus Topps WWE DVD promo cards, parallel Topps promo cards and oversized stickers
The Price: Around $60

Keep reading for more on this one ...

What's The Deal? I spotted this lot quite a while ago -- before I even launched this monthly lot series -- with an idea of maybe doing some slabbing as these are relatively obscure (not rare, just off the radar) cards. What are they? Most of them are promo cards made by Topps from around 2019 to 2021 (the set design used doesn't necessarily 100-percent correlate to the year made here thanks to pandemic delays) and they were released just one card per WWE DVD. The oversized 1987 Topps homages were released a bit differently in four-card packs in 2007 and 2008, while the bottom row in the gallery is what replaced the Topps cards in more recent years -- a big sticker (not made by Topps).

What's The Steal? The main group of promo cards in the gallery is stuff you don't see every day, but Topps made them for years and, if I remember correctly, they were initially only found in specially packaged (a sticker on front noting their presence) DVDs sold at Walmart. (That may have expanded over time as DVD volumes dropped before the WWE Network arrived making the format more moot.) In earlier years than these, cards often arrived in a single-card wrapper -- enough to protect it some and prevent it (at times) from bouncing around inside the DVD case but these more recent cards did not get hat treatment, so finding cards without absolutely demolished corners here -- and I mean demolished (even worse than these) -- are not likely in a lot of instances. Adding to the obscurity? Apparently parallel colors were in the mix -- though nothing got detailed at the time formally from the company -- and, yes, certified autographed versions are also in play for some stars. (I have personally pulled color parallels here but not ink -- but they do exist in some instances.) Because of the obscurity here and the overall volume made vs. regular cards, this was a no-brainer to me to grab this lot even though I knew the conditions would be hit and miss (check out that bottom left corner on the Ripley in the gallery). It would cost plenty more to track down sealed DVDs to replicate this lot. It's a bummer that wrapping the cards didn't happen as these would be strong cards to have slabbed vs. regular stuff ... but it is what it is.

The Lot Details ...
Base set completion: N/A
Duplicates: 0

Notables on cards – Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, Bayley, Kofi Kingston, Drew McIntyre, Braun Strowman, Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, Edge, Roman Reigns, Otis, Rhea Ripley, Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect, Roddy Piper, The Rock, Matt Riddle, Brock Lesnar

Rookie Cards – N/A

Insert cards: 7 (all in gallery below)

Bottom Line: Obscure stuff like this could be winners in the long run -- in any condition -- and I'd bet a lot of DVD buyers had no use for them, trashed them or have them sitting in their cases along with the discs. But that's just me ...
