Buzz Buys: Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, young WWE stars, retro finds, new autographs and an oldschool Roddy Piper moment?

Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.

So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ... a mix of newer pick-ups and some retro/oddball finds.

A SIMPLE VARIATION
The Card: Bryce Young 2023 Panini Prizm Draft Picks Variations Silver parallel
The Price: $9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This one caught my attention out there in the world with it being the antithesis of a lot of draft cards these days -- a helmet-less studio portrait -- so I bit. It looked clean and potentially slab-worthy but after how his rookie season went I might wait and see if others go the slab route and I'll pick theirs off rather than sub this one. Or, over the long haul, maybe this will make its way into my submissions -- but it's not a priority at the moment. We'll see. Either way, I like this card and no matter what he does in the NFL he's always got a spot of some sort in the school ties part of my collection.

BLACK LEATHER LOOK
The Card:
Bo Bichette 2022 Topps Chrome Ben Baller Edition
The Price:
About $1
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This brand is one I've literally opened maybe one pack of in its few years of existence, so that general lack of interest (too pricey for what it typically delivers for my tastes) led me slightly astray here -- I thought this was a parallel card that was mis-priced -- but I still like the black leather look of this one on this card this time. Would I chase more? Depends on the singles prices. I casually collect Bichette so ... maybe?

MEETING THE MOMENT
The Card: C.J. Stroud 2023 Topps Now (/13,854)
The Price: Less than $9 via Topps after rewards discount
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This extension of the Topps Now brand arrived with art by Tyson Beck after Stroud's record-setting showing -- and since there was a parallel chase and discount rewards worked as a "Now" card I bit only to land a standard version using my rewards discount. It happens, especially with a run that high. It's had a follow-up card just recently with ink (those packs at $599 a pop) available, too, but I'm not sure I really even needed this one at this price. The moment got me to dabble -- and I still prefer fully licensed stuff.

A PAIR OF ICONS IN ONE
The Card:
Ken Griffey Jr. 2023 Leaf Metallic Imaginations (/199)
The Price:
$24.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This ode to Nirvana's Nevermind album cover from 1991 was a no-brainer for me in this newer artist-driven design series from Leaf. These cards arrive in packs in a sealed top-loader between cardboard with the chase being a number of paralleled border colors here, and while I landed the basic version, I didn't mind that in this case as it's perhaps my second-favorite hue (blue perhaps the ideal as it meshes with the water). This one has a bit of a TIME magazine feel for this take on Junior from San Diego-based artist Harlan E. Mendez of HEM art studios. I probably won't bite on others unless there's some kind of pop culture homage in play on a name I like, but this one got me for sure.

TIFFY'S TIME IS GONNA COME ...
The Card:
Tiffany Stratton 2023 Panini Select WWE (Mezzanine tier)
The Price:
$17.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is Stratton's only standard card (along with parallels) in Select this year, and she's a top name to know in WWE as she should/could be arriving on the main roster very soon. It's not a Rookie Card (those are in a few 2022 sets) but this rarer tier is one that's packed with key names and a variety of images where many of these cards stand out. This one shows part of her ring entrance early on where she checked her nails or something (think characters from Clueless) but her schtick has evolved a bit since then with a strong character as well as impressive ring work for somebody with basically no wrestling experience other than NXT the last couple years.

SCHOOL COLORS
The Card:
Bryce Young 2023 Panini Select Draft Picks Sparks Silver Prizm
The Price:
Under $4
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is among a number of Young cards I picked off as the season got under way and the NFL stuff started to overshadow the earlier draft cards. Fine by me ... I prefer these colors but will dabble with all if the price is right. I liked this one as the red makes it feel correct here, though this is just a Silver parallel.

GRABBING A ROOKIE CARD
The Card:
Jasson Dominguez 2021 Bowman Heritage -- Rookie Card
The Price:
Under $1
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This RC is from a couple of the sets in 2021 where Topps didn't separate the prospects from the veterans like they should have, making this a RC by definition. (The same definition that's typically used to put the RC logos on cards.) His logo cards will be coming this year but when I saw these were so cheap I grabbed one for the heck of it ... I'm not much of a Yankee collector -- really more of an anti-Yanks fan -- but this one uses a past design that's bare bones (1993 Bowman) but with today's cleaner printing and I like it. (It's better than 1993.) Why's it cheap? I think the Chrome version in these same packs steals some of the thunder, really, and the logo speaks to many out there these days as it is.

SIMPLE INSERT
The Card:
Spencer Strider 2023 Topps Chrome Future Stars
The Price:
Pocket change
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is another current star where I'm casually dabbling with cards here and there. I picked this one up as its modern redo of the 1987/1988 Topps Future Stars logo got me along with all the color and a pretty tight crop that made it appealing for the price. I think I was one and done with Chrome after a blaster, so just grabbing singles is how I'm going ... slowly.

MORE ON-SALE INK ...
The Books:
Drew Barrymore Rebel Homemaker autographed publisher edition (four copies)
The Price:
About $14 apiece on sale
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This signed book is one you have probably seen here once or twice if you're a regular reader -- heck, I don't even know how many times I've mentioned this one -- but I keep grabbing them when they are on sale (I think this time it was buy one get one free or something like that) and because the sigs have been big and bold here with a little more detail than some of her other signed editions. I'm probably up to 10 of 'em as it's hard to pass up ink for a long-running A-list caliber name ... plus these can sell pretty well at times. Once they dry up they might sell even better.

GETTING A PUSH
The Card:
Ivy Nile 2022 Panini Impeccable WWE Indelible Ink Holo Silver (/25)
The Price:
$29.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This WWE newcomer recently made it to the main roster as part of a group called Diamond Mine -- basically a group of athletes who do powerful finesse stuff more than anything -- and she's had a few moments against veterans and others where it seems like there's some backing and a push with more successes potentially to come. As part of this, I grabbed a few cheap singles/parallels for Nile along with a couple autos. I like this set, so I ponied up a little bit more than I did for other cards of her to grab this slightly rarer parallel of a rookie-year auto. Not the biggest fan of her printed auto but it is what it is for this former Titan Games competitor aka Emily Andzulis back then. I'm sold so far.

NEW OLD VINYL
The Album:
The Doors -- The Doors (1967) on new vinyl
The Price:
About $20 on sale with a discount
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This pick-up from one of the big chain stores was to burn off some discount rewards and I went there with the idea of maybe another novelty slab over on Making The Grade with a modern edition of a classic from the 1960s where it would look cool slabbed and in top shape vs. an old original copy in much worse shape for a much higher price. I could still grade this one, but it arrived with a small bend/curl on one of the outer edges that might make for a disappointing mark on something modern. We'll see ... maybe I will, maybe I won't. I do like grading ...

TROPHY TIME!
The Slides:
Tom Hanks (with Rita Wilson) 1995 Academy Awards press slides
The Price:
Pocket change among a large lot
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This fearsome foursome of slides from the Oscars back in the day is a tiny sampling of a boatload of similar finds (awards show grip-and-grins) from a few lots of celeb slides I grabbed last year on a meandering collecting whim. Why? Just for the heck of it to go through them -- more surprises and cheaper than a lot of the overpriced "junk wax" lots out there -- and pick out some notables to build an album of stuff I like. I do think there's some collecting appeal here -- a lot, really -- but the leftovers from these pre-digital era companies are likely drying up every day. (I kind of wish I had dabbled here a decade ago.) Technically this could go as part of my school ties part of my stash as this comes from him winning Best Actor for Forrest Gump where he played the iconic Alabama character and former (fictional) Alabama Crimson Tide running back -- a book-turned-film written by a real Alabama author who I ran down for an autograph from on a copy of his years ago. I probably should build a little section for ties there ... but nothing about my collection is that organized on any front. Nothing.

THUNDERSTRUCK
The Photos:
Thunder Rosa autographed Republic of Lucha 8-by-10 promotional photos
The Price:
$5 apiece via Black Friday sale
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This pair of images are from a wrestling-focused store in California owned and operated by a pair of her AEW co-stars, Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo. They regularly do signings and other appearances at the store as well as events where they celebrate lucha culture with plenty of merch and other things like art shows and old film viewings -- all with a wrestling twist. They burned off all of their autographed photos on their website in November and December at prices too low to pass on for the better names. I didn't have this one (I previously purchased other past images for her) so I grabbed a couple along with some others that sold out pretty fast. Some new images this year are likely ... and I'll probably pounce on some of those, too.

ACETATE FOR FUN(KADELIC)
The Card:
Joe Namath 2022 Panini Illusions Funkadelic
The Price:
Pocket change
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This acetate creation looked properly funky to me with an photo that seemed to work out well in the design -- and since I don't even think I ripped any packs of this one I figured I'd dabble on the cheap. That's about it here ... other than Namath is an all-time great as a pro and for my college stash.

GO WITH THE FLOW
The Card:
Bo Bichette 2021 Topps Update All-Star Stitches Relics
The Price:
$5
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I wasn't sure how many memorabilia cards I have for my player these days -- I told you I casually collect him -- but the price was right and I liked how this ties to his All-Star appearance. My other players I collected in the past did have All-Star appearances but there weren't Relics made or, for whatever reason, their jersey wasn't picked up to make cards.

REMEMBER HEAD OF THE CLASS?
The Photo:
Khrystyne Haje autographed agency headshot with resume
The Price:
Around $25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This autographed photo came from a massive collection of this stuff amassed by a couple whose networking was strong and their final stash included thousands of unsigned headshots and resumes as well as countless autographs from past stars, too. The Harvey Kuflik Collection is so huge they didn't go the authenticated route -- there was/is just too much -- and it's been hitting the market for years apparently. I like the idea of headshots with attached resumes (unfortunately often stapled together ... a bummer for condition yet also a confirmation of reality out there in the old pre-digital casting world) so I have picked off a number of un-signed ones I'll probably drop in here in the coming months. I opted for early images where the credits are light -- a Rookie Card feel to some degree -- and they look early un their careers. Or in some cases they were cheap or interesting pieces for familiar names. I picked this autograph off, too, since it was cheap and not really an auto you see out there often. She's got plenty of credits but is perhaps best-remembered for the late-1980s show Head Of The Class. The auto is clearly legit but without personalization -- most are inscribed -- so I figured I'd start here. There are others I'd definitely want to add but they were pricier than this one.

POWERED BY BABY YODA
The Card:
Uno All Wild! Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) edition
The Price:
Around $6 on sale
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Ever do the barren holiday shopping thing where the toy section just isn't all that impressive and the pickings are slim over in the card aisle, too? Well, those things helped lead me to this one and I thought it was interesting to see just one character take on the Uno deck deal ... I have opened WWE Uno decks (I think I showed off that here at some point in the past) along with the Barbie movie recently. There are others I have also picked off, too, since I think some characters would make for interesting novelty slabs -- yep, I'd grade this stuff if the images are strong -- and one recent release here in this realm actually included a chase card in each deck encouraging purchases of multiple decks. I did one of those, too, as these were all on sale ... I'll pop that one up as a slow news day Buzz Break at some point.

STOP TRIMMING CARDS, PEOPLE ...
The Card:
Shotzi Blackheart 2021 Topps Heritage WWE Autographs (/199)
The Price:
Under $30
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This auto arrived in my hands with relative affordable ease -- I figured interest in this high-energy star had perhaps waned a bit, but another thought in the back of my mind when I was eyeing this one online was whether it was trimmed. I figured it might just be a funky photo but, yes, when it arrived in-hand it was slightly narrower than it should be. Just stop doing that stuff, people. Leave the funky corners and edges alone if they are there or if the centering is just a smidge off. I liked the new take on 1990 Topps here for autos and the stock is pretty clean and crisp for the most part along with on-card autos ... nobody likes trimmed ones, though.

SOME THROWBACKS ...
The Items:
John Johnson & Sidney Weeks 1973 and 1974 Portland Trail Blazers game programs
The Price:
About $35 total in two lots
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
These two programs showing the first NBA player I ever interviewed -- and a guy with school ties for me -- are something I'd never happened upon before in the past but I managed to find both as part of a pair of lots on the same day last year. The Johnsons are keepers to me, while the others will sit in a box until I figure out where they'll go ... like so much other stuff. Items like this are simple and not all that pricey when you do find them ... but you won't find 'em all that often. If it's in your realm of collecting wants you really shouldn't pass on stuff like this ... there reaches a point where some things nearly 50 years later aren't likely to still exist -- or they are tucked away in collections to never be seen again.

MANUAL MEMORABILIA
The Card:
Apollo 10 2022 Upper Deck Cosmic Operations and Instructions
The Price:
Under $3
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This set takes somewhat plentiful/findable (in some circles) NASA technical manuals for past space missions and chops them up to make memorabilia cards. I grabbed this one for the second Apollo mission that orbited the moon in 1969 and the last before The Eagle landed on the moon for the first time that same year. Some of these cards have more text than others while some have technical drawings. I just grabbed one that had some substance for a big mission without a big price. I'll probably add more when I dabble at some point as they're unique and something different.

BUYING INDY CARDS
The Cards:
Sabotage Wrestling Series 8 cards (two sets)
The Price:
About $40
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This card set for an indy promotion based in Texas is strong in that while it's just re-published posters with matches noted on the backs there are a ton of names here on many of them who are now high-profile players elsewhere. Shotzi, for example, is a name I collect and she appears on several cards here and that was enough for me to bite. Sets like this aren't heavily produced, so you have to jump if you find them -- because they aren't likely to last long. The promotion created a number of small sets in the past and some are early/first indy cards for those same names. Some of those cards can be pricey and the company 's merch store recently found some cards for some of those key names and sold them at steep prices. I know that because I sprung for two of them at those steep prices for a birthday present -- prices I would not normally pay -- and, well, they did me dirty as they were quite rough condition-wise. (It stung so bad I still haven't written about it ... but at some point I will. I chalked it up to, well, at least they didn't reprint more and still have more copies to sell, and, no, they aren't a card dealer or card company.) These are fine and other than some rough-cut edges I just might slab the Shotzi cards at some point ... and maybe more.

IT KEEPS DISAPPOINTING ME ...
The Card:
Bryce Young 2022 Bowman University Chrome 1952 Bowman
The Price:
$2
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This card is the bane of my existence as I really dig it and I want a high-grade slabbed copy ... but the quality control for this release was really erratic at best. Copies I have of him and others are all plagued by various issues and the centering for stuff is often quite rough, too. This one looked strong and it is ... other than some curling or a sight bend on the back. At this point, I'll just grab one already graded at some point ... but even some out there in slabs I wonder how they got the grades they did.

PRESS KIT INCLUSIONS
The Items:
Friday press photos and slides featuring Ice Cube, Chris Tucker, Bernie Mac, Nia Long, F. Gary Gray, John Witherspoon
The Price:
$9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This lot is part of what would have come in a promotional press kit for this favorite comedy of the past. I grabbed it since the images were clean -- though there weren't many images left from what would be in a complete kit -- but the slides are perhaps closer to a full set. What is this? Before the era of heavy online traffic and big digital downloads, newspapers and magazines would receive printed photos and sometimes color slides in a folder with info about the movie to help with stories for their publications. All that leftover stuff is often out there and findable on the cheap ... but the prices can be higher for more interesting/memorable ones.

DETAILED INK
The Card:
Montez Ford 2021 Topps Chrome WWE Green Refractor Autographs (/99)
The Price:
$8.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This high-flyer's high-flying skills are kind of showcased here -- but you can't get a good feel for just how high this guy goes when it comes to his corner dives ... but for this price for a numbered Chrome card with a compete auto (not all are) while signed on-card? It was an easy buy. Why? There's potential for big things here but first he's got a reality show coming soon with his wife, former WWE women's champ Bianca Belair, that drops in February. While I don't think Love & WWE: Bianca & Montez could spark card buys from viewers over on Hulu, it probably can't hurt their public exposure... and he's got to have singles title-contender shots at some point, too.

FRAMES OF FELINES
The Item:
Batman Returns film frame cuts (Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman)
The Price:
Under $4.99 after discounts
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This simple kind of memorabilia is one I have written about before in past Buzz Buys -- dig around for more details like the eBay seller's name -- but I like the approach. Simply put, these are just a few frames cut from a memorable film print placed into a semi-rigid among with a bookmark-style sticker attached to give it a little more presentation. Pfeiffer's turn as Catwoman was a highlight in all of the past comic movies and this same scene can be found on Stadium Club and standard Topps cards for this blockbuster back in the day ... so I grabbed this one along with some others. Why? Just for fun ... something to stash ... something different.

RED THUNDER
The Card:
Thunder Rosa 2022 AEW Allure Red Rainbow parallel
The Price:
$7.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This high-energy star is back in an AEW ring after time off due to injuries and when I saw this one pop up online in a search of her stuff I had to grab it. Why? I like the color and texture here along with a strong image ... I just dig it and these, from what I have seen, don't pop up in, say, every blaster. I'm sure prices will fall as more and more packs are ripped, but I just liked this one enough to pounce. Heck, these are clean enough I might even grade this one. It's a cool card to me.

OLD BUT NEW TO ME
The Card:
Jackie Robinson (and Gus Bell, Mel Parnell, Mike Garcia) 1992 Topps Archives Bazooka Quadracard
The Price:
About $1.50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This old card is one from a set that never surfaced back then where I lived -- it's from some Bazooka bubble gum package -- and it's among a number of cards showcasing four cards from the 1953 Topps set. With this one showcasing Robinson for that price, I figured I'd grab one.

MY SOLO SAPPHIRE
The Cards:
Nick Swisher 2016 Topps Chrome Sapphire Edition (announced as /250)
The Price:
$3 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is the only Sapphire appearance for my player, coming in the very first edition of that brand and I'll pick them off when they present themselves on the cheap. Why? Partly to celebrate he's not been in any of the various editions since -- a bummer that has ultimately saved me money -- and because I own the jersey he's wearing on this card as it was fully authenticated by MLB and I checked the photo's info on Getty Images where it matched my MLBA sticker info. It's not my only card-matched game-used piece but picking these up is just something I have to do as a collector. Right?

PARALLEL POWER
The Card:
Toni Storm 2021 Topps WWE Black parallel (/5)
The Price:
Under $10
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This rare parallel is from a set that's admittedly not my favorite -- but it's grown on me some since then as it's a release that has a lot to chase and find in either box format. I've been a collector of Timeless Toni since her debuts on WWE cardboard -- I wish it had been on them back when she appeared on her first Stardom cards from Japan -- and this was an easy pick-up for the price with that volume. It also looks flawless and slab-worthy ... and I might.

CAST OF A CLASSIC?
The Item:
White Men Can't Jump press photo showcasing Tyra Ferrell, Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson and Rosie Perez
The Price:
About $5
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This press kit photo I picked up on its own as it's just a solid image of the main characters in this basketball-based comedy classic. It's perfect other than a small errant spot of blue ink on the right border and maybe one minor cropping mark on the top edge and it just presents as a solid piece for $5 -- it seems like it could easily be $20 or more. It's also a perfect candidate for a slab, though I haven't decided to go there just yet for this kind of item ... I have a ton I'd want to encase but am focused on other kinds of items first. Photos don't take up a lot of space ... just an album.

A PARALLEL ... BUT NOW A BUMMER
The Card:
Cora Jade 2022 Panini WWE NXT Red (/199) -- Rookie Card parallel
The Price:
Under $8
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is a parallel of a favorite card of mine for a few reasons as it's a RC but also one that presents a hunt and the challenge of finding it (and its base) without damage in certain spots. They do exist ... but not often. I grabbed this one raw and, in the time since, actually found another one and slabbed that. Could I slab this one, too? Maybe, though I don't have a lot of incentive here as her recent comeback from an injury and into the main-event fold in NXT ended just as quickly as it started as she's now out with a torn ACL. Maybe by this time next year, it'll make it into a submission.

SOME SERIOUS TRIVIA HERE
The item:
Henry Winkler in The One And Only (1977) 8-by-10 Paramount Pictures press photo
The Price:
About $6.50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This comedy was perhaps a high-profile one from long ago -- there are some big names attached (it's a Carl Reiner movie) and Winkler was an A-lister as Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on Happy Days by then  -- but I only did a quick run-through it (it's on YouTube in several pieces) because of one piece of insane trivia I happened upon not that long ago. What is this about? Winkler is a struggling actor who turns to pro wrestling as a means and struggles there, too, with a number of personas before arriving at apparent stardom as a Gorgeous George (bottom middle on the photo) knock-off. When I found out about this movie -- and a key cameo that I just couldn't believe -- I scoured online hoping there might be some kind of item (magazine, lobby cards, photos, anything) to confirm an early pre-famous appearance of an A-list wrestler here well, well before his prime as a household name ... but, no, it likely doesn't exist. So, with all that said, now we all need to go to the tape ... to see "Rowdy" Roddy Piper as an opponent that Winkler faces. Really. Watch the moment right here. The match is from when Winkler's character tries out a gimmick as a Nazi villain (top left on the photo) but Piper doesn't appear anywhere on promo materials except in the film -- an uncredited role despite him having a named character ... Leatherneck Joe Brady. He's seen in four repetitive "matches" as part of a quick montage. It's his first film appearance and he famously had a ton of roles after and during his wrestling days. When this presented itself, it was an easy grab ... I just wish it was something showing Piper.

A RARE PICK-UP FROM A YEAR AGO ...
The Card:
Lash Legend 2022 Panini Chronicles National Treasures Gold (/10) -- Rookie Card parallel
The Price:
$8
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This NXT star wasn't a big deal back when I grabbed this -- a rarer RC parallel that was just too cheap to pass up -- but in recent weeks there might be some signs that she's making some waves as a power player. Literally ... watch this. I picked this up with something else last March and, well, it might end up being the better item of the two. We'll see.
