Buzz Buys (Jan.): Broadway Joe's autograph, retro cardboard, WWE stars, comic books, notable ink & plenty of Shotzi merch

Here's this month's roundup of items that have recently caught my eye as a buyer ...

--

BROADWAY JOE
The Item: Joe Namath autographed 16-by-20 Sports Illustrated "Broadway Joe" cover photo (BAS witnessed)
The Price: $249
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I don't normally include the actual price when I make a bigger buy, but in this case a sale price was too strong for a piece so nice ... so I am. Why? A typical price for an item like this is substantially higher than what I paid (around $400-600) and peak asking prices are sometimes even nuttier than the normal range. This was my big Black Friday buy and I landed it via Mill Creek Sports (this is their scan as I struggled to photograph mine thanks to size/glare on my top-loader) and one reason why I grabbed it (beyond the price) was that I liked this horizontal version of the photo and its autograph placement infinitely more than the vertical version. Atop that, it's also a piece where I had a chance to land one for just $150 long ago at The National but I didn't as I didn't have a way to safely get it home. This is the iconic photo that led to the nickname for the eventual Super Bowl winner and icon who helped change the game forever. He turns 83 this year, too, and I don't think demand will lessen over time.

LIKE A ROLLING STONE
The Card:
Keith Richards 2025 Panini Prizm The Rolling Stones Orange Wave Prizm (/259)
The Price:
About $1
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This was a cheap singles pick-up early on after this set arrived, and I grabbed it since it had a strong combo of photo, color, good centering and was a numbered parallel. Those are all things in my mind that could lead this into being a graded card among my music slabs. Why? Just as a representative card from a newer release. I think a good photo showing the whole group might be better, but that hasn't presented itself so nothing has been graded yet.

END OF AN ERA
The Items:
Non-Sport Update magazine -- the final issue
The Price: Less than cover
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I didn't need one of these -- heck, I didn't need two -- but I grabbed them since it's a finale for a title that first arrived in 1990 and was essentially a sole survivor and top option for those wanting to know more about non-sports cardboard. A simple reason to buy this in the past was that virtually every issue included promo cards -- there are some in this issue and not every copy of this last magazine has the same cards inside this one -- while a secondary reason for me, long ago at least, was to find dealers for non-sports cards via their advertisements. Without many of those in there in this issue, well, that's one more reason it's done. It lasted just about a decade under its latest owner.

A CUT ABOVE
The Item:
Shotzi Blackheart signed hair vial from her haircut promo after she was attacked on Smackdown on June 30, 2023
The Price:
More than I'd like to admit ... but far, far less than any WWE hobby box of cards this past year.
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
My favorite wrestler -- so much so she has her own series here when it comes to memorabilia -- recently started selling stuff on Whatnot and that has helped me land even more unique items for my collection beyond cards. You'll be seeing more of her here this year for sure -- and even this time -- and this vial is among the most-iconic and odd pick-ups of the bunch. (Other items people can grab regularly are ring-used memorabilia displays, complete match-used items, signed photos, the shirts right off her back during the stream and more.) Now, what's the deal here? Her sister was going through chemo and she wanted to cut off her trademark green hair as a sign of support -- and it was turned into a TV storyline. This video sums it all up. She saved it all (a massive plastic bag's worth) to make more of these ... but once they're gone they're gone. (Or, if she ends up back in WWE the streaming shows likely would be done.) I could have easily put this into my semi-regular series, but it's all summed up with the photo and the links here.

A GOOD SEASON
The Card:
James Wood 2022 Bowman Heritage Prospects
The Price:
Under $2
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is still a prospect card released in advance of his Rookie Cards in 2025 releases, but the reason I grabbed this 1994 Bowman re-do was because it's among some of the earlier cards to show him in his correct uniform, not the one of the San Diego Padres where he never played an actual MLB game but has a lot of cardboard that might make you think otherwise. He hit .256 with 31 homers and 94 RBI in 157 games in his first full season for the Nationals and got an All-Star nod, too.

THE (MAGAZINE) DEBUT CARD
The Card:
Mike Trout 2021 Topps X Sports Illustrated (announced /17,936)
The Price:
Pocket change
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
There was probably a time where this card was seen as kind of a big deal as it launched the online-style brand of card showing notable past SI covers and this No. 1 card launched it all. Why? It's a top player's first cover. These days? Not so notable ... people should keep those kinds of trends in mind with a lot of cards released in any fashion. What's red hot now might not be later, especially when it's something trendy. Times change.

HAPPY LITTLE TREES
The Card:
Spencer Strider 2023 Topps X Bob Ross The Joy of Baseball
The Price:
$1
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Speaking of trendy, this is a brand that has, for whatever reason, been one that has commanded big prices for boxes and been one that's in huge demand in some circles as it meshes MLB players with artwork from the art instructor turned PBS icon Bob Ross and his The Joy of Painting TV series. Not my taste at all -- I get the creativity and the vibes of the show and works (watched a few times long ago) -- but this single card is it for my exploration here. Happy little trees ... but not for me.

IT'S BO, YOU KNOW ...
The Cards:
Bo Bichette 2021 Topps Heritage High Number Clubhouse Collection Relic & 2023 Topps Heritage Clubhouse Collection Gold Relic (/99)
The Price:
About $11 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
The power of a down season can be seen here. How? I landed the numbered Relic for $1 less than the standard one. After a rough 2024, the confidence in his cards wasn't as strong early in 2025 and I picked off these. It ultimately was a solid rebound season and a return from injury in the World Series. Where will he end up next? We'll find out soon.

THEN & NOW ...
The Items:
Shotzi Blackheart autographed 8-by-10 Creepy KOFY Movie Time card photo and an 11-by-14 inscribed "Indy God" photo -- both JSA Witnessed via High Spots streamed signing
The Price:
Roughly $100 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This pair of signed photos -- with free inscriptions I asked to get -- came from a signing via High Spots in the middle of last year and they both turn out to reflect two other notable stories that happened for me in the months since. The KOFY image is a scan of one of the cards that I wrote about here -- I opted for a scan to get a bigger sig and not have to worry about gloss issues or damage sending it in to High Spots. It also turned out to be a card that led to this story as she didn't own any of the cards. If that wasn't a trip enough, the"Indy God" photo from this same signing tied to this later story. Ultimately, one of my collecting goals here on the autograph front is to check off ink from all eras of her career and then with any notable pairings, projects or moments -- wresting or not -- and I'm getting there. I'm getting closer all the time -- I recently picked off one of her personas and that'll show up here at some point soon. Why? I'm just a collector picking off stuff that's unique beyond cards.

FROM THE SCREEN TO A CARD ...
The Card:
Thomas Jane, D.B. Sweeney, Tim Robbins & Charlie Sheen 2025 Leaf Metal Independence Day The Four Of July Blue Autographs Pre-Production Proof (1/1)
The Price:
About $6
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This foursome reflects baseball movies -- 61*, Eight Men Out, Bull Durham and Major League -- and it was an easy grab as it's a proof of what would be a monster card if it was the signed version. None of them are impossible autos and I have at least three of them myself, if not all four -- but all on one card would be impressive. Note that all four tiny images here use movie-specific images, too.

JUNIOR & JULIUS ...
The Card:
Junior Bridgeman, Julius Erving & Ricky Sobers 1980-81 Topps
The Price:
$2.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I picked up this card on a curiosity search after reading about Bridgeman in an obituary much like this one. He played a dozen seasons in the NBA but turned into a billionaire after his playing days. I opted for this card from this odd set since Erving was on there, too. Bridgeman's story is crazy and I knew little of him.

GOING GOLD AGAIN ...
The Card:
Thomas Jane (as Mickey Mantle in 61*) 2025 Leaf National 15th Anniversary Gold Vinyl card (1/1)
The Price:
$30
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This wasn't a super-cheap find but, well, I liked it. This card popped up online in a sea of parallel versions between these and their proof cards that were made, too. I bit because of those Superfractor-style swirls that the seller didn't actually mention with this die-cut card.

MY LONE LABUBU ...
The Item:
Ninnic Wild & Free (52 Toys) "Inspo Staff" plush keychain -- stream-pulled & signed by pro wrestler Shotzi Blackheart
The Price:
Less than a WWE blaster box
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
The whole Labubu phenomenon just ain't my thing. At all. But, I decided that if I was going to own one, well, it would tie into my overall collection ... so here we are. Early on in her Whatnot run, Blackheart did a plush stream to get rid of a number of her pieces -- the blind-box approach to all of these apparently hooked her -- and this one, while not an official Labubu-brand release, was good enough for me. As you can see at the link above, it was pulled in an online video (color differences here are lighting/brightening/filtering of the Instagram feed from a darker room where it was filmed) and I asked her to sign it before sending it with some other stuff that I bought. He arrived just fine except in typical hardcore fashion the dude apparently gigged himself the whole way to me against the inside of the box. It was a bloody, err inky, mess in the box ... but he's my one-of-a-kind/I-won't-need-another piece. (A match-used Labubu popped up in one of her later streams ... I missed there but have landed an even weirder item will pop up here at some point.)

JUST PEACHY
The Cards:
Stephanie Vaquer & Lola Vice 2025 Topps Now WWE (announced /4,672 copies)
The Price:
Five-pack price direct from Topps
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This post-win moment was intentionally cheeky and that ties into their ring personas in different ways here -- but both are badasses and relative newcomers to WWE. Vaquer is from Chile and has wrestled around the world, while Vice is a former MMA fighter (real name Valerie Loureda) who was 4-1 there before looking to the wrestling ranks where she's been in NXT and also in Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. This card is from the Worlds Collide event and, well, here's the footage from that cameraman in the front row that went viral. (Is this his Rookie Card?) Vaquer's relative lack of cards has seen some strong prices on her stuff -- she has very few 2024 RCs from Panini -- and that was the main reason I grabbed a five-pack here with an eye on grading one. (I'm waiting out prices when it comes to a slabbed RC.)

SEEMS LIKE LONG AGO ...
The Card:
Joe Namath 2017 Panini Certified Cuts (/399)
The Price:
Under $1
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This numbered card is from a set that was loaded to the gills with legendary cut autos and ended up with a rookie class that's an all-timer when it comes to stars of recent years. This isn't even 10 years old but it feels like long, long ago as I even opened a box of this brand ... an equivalent release today would be out of my comfort zone on the suggested retail price alone let alone any market moves. Meanwhile, all these years later, a rarer serial-numbered card of a Hall of Famer and icon is pocket change ... go figure.

TWO TIMES THE HERITAGE
The Cards:
Spencer Strider 2024 Topps Heritage Mini parallel & 2024 Topps Heritage High Number Chrome Silver Border Refractor parallel (/225)
The Price:
About $6 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This guy's Heritage cards always get me to look and this pairing was just some cheaper hunting in the midst of a bad season. The Mini is an easy base card from that standalone release that seemed too dry for me to do a box (worst-case scenario) at its price, while the chrome was a clean copy from High Number where all cards got Chromed with parallels. Both box prices are pretty steep with a lot made ... so singles are the way to go for me as, well, the big stuff won't flow in every box to help you perhaps come out ahead. Buying by the case is probably the best route for High Number if you want to rip, though.

THE SUPER BOWL IS COMING ...
The Card:
Janet Whackson (aka Janet Jackson & Justin Timberlake) 2007 Topps Hollywood Zombies Foil parallel
The Price:
$5
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is a parallel card -- something I actually didn't realize existed -- from this oddity of a set from almost 20 years ago that spoofs a moment from even longer ago. Here's what I said when I graded a base version of this. ... "It's been more than 20 years since the controversial -- and planned -- 'wardrobe malfunction' moment during the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show in 2004. This card comes from a celeb-loaded and totally eccentric set of Mad magazine-style cartoons with zombified twists. Who green-lit this set? Who knows at this point ... it was a one-and-done (as far as I know) but a few cards here have caught my attention as potential oddball slabs. ... This fits into a music niche for my slabs with a side of football and pop culture impact -- there was a lot of fallout -- and it'll probably not be the last card I grade from this one as there are a lot of 1990s and beyond icons and moments found in this." ... Grading is why I grabbed this one, too. We'll see how soon it makes it into a submission.

SPOOFING LEGENDS
The Cards:
The Dorks (The Doors) & Oozy Oozebutt (Ozzy Osbourne) 2001 Silly Productions Silly CDs
The Price:
Under $2 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
At a glance, one might think these were made by Topps as part of its Wacky Packages spoof card line that's been around for decades but, well, they're not. However, they were created by some of the same artists who have worked on those parody set for Topps. I picked off a few here since they are all generally quite cheap. Parody non-sports sets aren't really in my wheelhouse unless there's a pop culture tie -- and this set has nods to a number of notables.

A BUSY BUT TIGHT DESIGN
The Card:
Babe Ruth 2001 Topps Post 500 Home Run Club
The Price:
Under $2
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Off the top of my head, this set is one of only a few fully licensed food issue releases of recent decades and while this design has a lot going on with not one, not two but three logos on there it still works out pretty well. These are on some thin oldschool cardboard and it's got a good photo of The Bambino ... so strong I've pondered grading here just for my little stack of slabs for top home run guys like Ruth, Hank Aaron and Roger Maris. Why? Collecting.

SPEAKING OF THE BABE ...
The Cards:
Hank Aaron 2003 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites
The Price:
About $3.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This card is one I've picked off a few times here and a few times for reprints of the original card from the 1974 Topps set that this one emulates. (The design is basically the same but the photo is infinitely better.) Like the Ruth, these were picked off for a grading submission candidate and one of them will be in graders' hands soon. Why? I like having some cheap Aaron slabs from around the 1974-75 timeframe.

ONE MORE SOFT-SLABBED VARIANT
The Book:
Wolverine No. 1 (2025) J. Scott Campbell variant (Collect Forever Uncirculated)
The Price:
$7
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
These soft-slabbed books are mildly compelling to me -- they're not graded, just clean copies encased -- and when they are a variant at a good price I've bit. This is a perfect example of that.

ONLY AT THE SHOP
The Book:
WWE No. 1 (Friendly Neighborhood Comics Sasha Banks variant cover)
The Price:
$9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is a book I have pondered picking off as an already graded copy as it is among the better variants for the series in my view and it was one that could only be found in one locale. But the prices there have not dipped enough for my taste. Because of that, I picked this up as part of a trio of books raw and it's almost no-brainer slab-worthy copy save for a couple small details. Right now, it's on a maybe list for future subs.

A THROWBACK ODDBALL FIND
The Card:
Randall Cunningham 1993 Dog Tags Gold (announced /25,000)
The Price:
$2.75
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This oddball was one I picked up months ago with an eye on a potential slab -- it's something so odd I'd never seen it before despite it being 33 years old. Atop that,  I collected Cunningham back then and still hadn't seen it. Since it's printed on plastic, I decided to get it in hand before potential grading as surface scratches on stock like that can be where stuff gets ugly. It's not a high-priority card but it's odd enough that I still might -- and it has a strong photo.

INK FROM THE PAST
The Card:
Michelle Beadle 2011-12 Pinnacle NHL Fans of the Game Autographs
The Price:
$15.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This former ESPN host is now part of FanDuel's NBA programming but back when this card arrived it was one in a hockey release and it notes her favorite squad on the ice, the New York Rangers. It was an easy add from an insert set that has, for years, gotten sports fans some oddball ink in their packs.

MORE FOR MADSEN
The Cards:
Michael Madsen 2009 Donruss Americana Cinema Stars (/1,000)
The Price:
About $1.50 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This pair of pocket-change pick-ups was easy and it's from a release where I first landed his autograph from a pack long ago -- it's on an auto-mem card just like this and that shows why the design here is so empty. Despite that, I still generally like this design -- I wish it wasn't foilboard, though.

BLAKE MONROE ARRIVES
The Card:
Blake Monroe 2025 Topps Now WWE (announced /1,380)
The Price:
Direct via Topps (whatever it is) ... and I might have used my last coupon code
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This was my last Topps Now card of the year last year and that might be the last one I order direct for a while -- I haven't been lured since October -- after it arrived with this meh centering. That's atop my previous 10-card pack of her also being mostly sloppy cards with centering and some rough edges. I grab to grade but this ain't gonna get it done ... so I'll wait for the inevitable slabbing from somebody else if it strikes me. (My WWE pack ripping is at a literal all-time low thanks to SRPs, so there may not be much that grabs me here, either.) Monroe's time in NXT has seemed up and down but as this one shows she did claim a title and also seems to be fast-tracked for the main roster of WWE (and probably should be) so there may not be that many more NXT Now cards to disappoint me.

RETRO INK ...
The Item:
John Johnson circa 1970 8-by-10 press photo
The Price:
$13.50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is a school ties addition for my autograph stash and, while it's not authenticated, it's one that seemed enigmatic to me. It's a vintage auto for sure with an older-style autograph that he rarely signed over the years on a bit of a grungy print that was used for a publication and then at some point was signed. What makes it interesting? I believe the seller thought it was from his time with the Seattle Supersonics or otherwise from his NBA career ... but the photo is from his two seasons as a member of them Iowa Hawkeyes (check that radio station name in the background) where he was a dominating star before being a first-round pick of the Cavaliers. (Their first pick in team history.) How dominating? He only played two seasons at Iowa after transferring in but still holds the scoring records for the two best games (49 and 46 points -- both long before the three-pointer) and he twice had 23 rebounds in a game and both of those games are still among the Top 10 there despite his playing days ending in 1970. His senior season scoring total? Still ranks fourth. He won an NBA title in Seattle and part of his basketball legacy also lives on today as his son, Mitch, is the coach of the San Antonio Spurs.

ALWAYS ADDING ...
The Card:
Nick Swisher 2006 Topps Allen & Ginter Relics
The Price:
A few bucks (price doesn't matter ... I'll grab 'em if I see them and they're not too high)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This card for my player comes from what was, in its time (or at least its early years) one of my favorite brands out there. Not so much now ... but that's OK for this front as my player doesn't have much cardboard now, either. All good.

THE NUMBERED PARALLEL
The Card:
Jose Canseco 2019 Topps Update 150 Years of Professional Baseball 150th Anniversary parallel (/150)
The Price:
Around $2
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
The player I used to religiously collect -- before the "hits" era where he became too pricey -- was Canseco and I liked the simplicity of this parallel card's design and its horizontal photo. It's well-balanced and almost perfect -- I think I'd downsize the "Greatest Moments" text slightly but the rest is ideal to my eye.

OF MONEYBALL FAME
The Card:
Jeremy Brown 2007 Upper Deck Predictor Edition Green parallel
The Price:
About $2.50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This parallel is one I don't remember a lot of the details for -- honesty, don't care other than this card and one other from the set -- but the reason I grabbed this is for my school ties part of my collection as he was an Alabama player. His story in the book Moneyball is as key as the other guy I'd want in Green from this set (not sure if I have it or not ... probably), which is Swisher. I like the green borders for A's players for sure.

THREE CAPTAINS
The Cards:
Captain Britain 2023 Fleer Throwbacks '89 Marvel Edition Orange (/489) & Glossy Gold parallels
The Price:
Pocket change apiece
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This card is one that I probably have mentioned here before for a base card, but these parallels pop up here this time because this artwork comes from a back cover of an Excalibur comic from my favorite artist and this was perhaps my favorite character back in the day. The 1989 Fleer MLB design seems to work well with colors and new printing materials, too. For pocket change, I picked off a few of these to see them in-hand and decide if I want to grade one. I might ... just for fun.

THEN & NOW II
The Cards:
Tiffany Stratton 2022 Panini WWE International Debut Edition -- Rookie Card & 2024 Panini Select WWE Select Future
The Price:
About $15 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
These Stratton cards are ones that I really want to pick up graded and I pondered sending these in no matter what but didn't. The Rookie Card is a biggie in my mind as the stock used is sloppy and skinny -- this one is too rough to grade and expect anything respectable -- while the newer insert is pretty clean but has some peculiarities on the front's plastic edges where I'm not sure if it might deduct or not ... and then a more-substantial back edge issue that nixed grading completely.

TWO TALES OF AUTOGRAPHS ...
The Cards:
Shotzi Blackheart 2025 GCW Autographs card
The Price:
$34.99 for the encased one and free for the other one
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
My favorite wrestler returned to the indy ranks this past year and dominated in terms of being omnipresent on the scene -- literally almost everywhere -- but not too much cardboard came of it beyond Panini's few MLW cards, stuff she had made and then this card released via Game Changer Wrestling. I like the look of this one a lot and was a bit surprised to land an on-card auto with ink -- a full letter -- running off the side of the card. That's rare. (LOL.) I figured they must have had these lined up on a table for signing with some slight overlaps and they got done quickly without moving the cards. That development had a second one on my mental radar/to-do list, but I hadn't gotten back around to that and then I landed the blue-ink version as a free giveaway prize while watching one of Blackheart's Whatnot streams.

A SOMBER TALE IN SEATTLE
The Card:
Miguel Fuentes & Dick Baney 1970 Topps -- Rookie Cards
The Price:
$2.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This card is one I first picked up long, long ago -- that one is a pretty mangled copy -- and in more recent years I landed a Heritage buyback stamped one, too. This time? I grabbed this because it's very clean -- so clean and it's already been graded for you to see here at some point later. Why this card? The Seattle Pilots story is an oddity in MLB history as the team lasted just a single season. It was sold to Bud Selig and immediately moved to Milwaukee to become the Brewers just before the season started in 1970 -- in fact, the Pilots didn't exist by the time these cards arrived (or at least by the time all series of the set dropped) in 1970. Fuentes' career lasted just eight games, going 1-for-3 with a 5.19 ERA, before he was murdered in Puerto Rico in January 1970 which meant it was too late to pull him from the card set if they had wanted to. The 23-year-old closed out the final game in Seattle, so he also was in the history books as the last pitcher for the team.

SILLY FOR SURE ...
The Card:
David Cone 2024 Topps x Chris Berman Boomer's Baseball Berman's Nickname Nameplate Variations
The Price:
Pocket change
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
The ESPN legend's schtick included a constant flow of nicknames for players and this card is one of a number of variations that add them to cards in the set. Like a lot in that set, well, I don't think it works out all that well ... but not all sets can be winners. This one was just weird and this is the only card I have ever had in-hand from this release.
