Buzz's Pick Six: 2019 boxes that I'd rip into (or stash) now

Have you seen the latest cool cards from a new release? With so many options for collectors of all kinds arriving every week it's possible you haven't. That's where Buzz comes in -- well at least on one brand you'll see here from time to time in what we're calling Buzz's Pick Six. Simply put, here are six cards from a new arrival that seemed interesting to this collector and we think they might interest you, too.

This week's list: Six 2019 boxes that I'd rip (or maybe even stash) right now ...

SAFETY IN NUMBERS -- AS IN A BOATLOAD OF ROOKIE CARDS
The Box: 2019 Topps Update Series Baseball Jumbo Box
The Price: Click here
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This year's rookie crop is a strong one -- and there might be more potential than the 2018 class that sparked serious interest in this release last year. It was seemingly plentiful all year long and then poof -- the rocketship took off. This year's isn't super-cheap (right now) but some of that fuel seemingly has gone to Series 2 since it has earlier cards for a couple of high-profile guys -- Series 2 is pricey and surprised me -- but this one has some of those guys' cards as well as a number of others. Topps Chrome also seems to have some very good potential in my mind, too, but these jumbo boxes include a ton of stuff and the chances you get at parallels and other stuff here - in volume -- put this one at the top of my list. (And if you're on a budget and don't want to swing hard on this one -- you might look for blasters of Series 2 and Update both here and at retail ... those can still be found. These won't last as long as those, though.)

WORTH THE RISK?
The Box:
2019 Panini Spectra Football Hobby Box
The Price: Click here
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This one is the home of some serious Tom Brady autographs -- inscriptions -- that will pay for a few boxes if you find one. That's not easy, of course, but they are in there. I didn't initially like the crazy designs here but what I did like was the color and the thick stock on every card -- perhaps that's the grading-minded person in me. I wish a lot of releases would go with thicker stock, especially for autographs. This year's includes 10 hits in every box -- at least two per pack as there are only four packs and some will include three. I like the mix of past and present here, too, as more than a few of the past players on hits here have caught my attention.

DROPS THIS WEEK
The Box: 2019-20 Panini Donruss Basketball Hobby Box
The Price: Click here
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Sure, I could have gone with a Panini Prizm box here -- but you all know that one is a big deal this year. This one arrives on Friday with another new Zion Williamson presence and plenty more to be found. These boxes will include 60 inserts/parallels and a pair of hits and you can bet those key rookies are part of all of them. I've gone on record as not being as big of a fan of Donruss' design across the board this year compared to past years, but this one's approach for collectors is a solid one. There are some solid-looking cards to be found here (see gallery here) and it will all be amped up a little more with Donruss Optic later. Both should be popular.

CHANGE IN FORMAT, BUT ...
The Box:
2019 Topps WWE NXT Hobby Box
The Price: Click here
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This one moved from an autograph in every pack higher-end approach to a low-end box with just two signed cards inside but the same general feel. That definitely hurt my first impressions of this one but there were two things that did pop up here that have made a bit of a difference for me. First, it appears that there's one box per case with five autographs instead of two -- a hot box per se -- that a number of collectors have reported finding and I landed one here. That's pretty solid for a box around the $50 mark. The Roster set here is a big highlight more than the base set in my mind but there's one name to be found here who's commanding some good cash as it's her first autographed card -- and it comes with on-card ink. That's the auto from Toni Storm, a 24-year-old New Zealander who has wrestled in the UK and Japan since age 13. (Yes, really.) Her autos have not yet popped up in any real volume on eBay but they have gone for as much as $101 for just the standard version -- and the parallels even more. Her only other WWE card appearances came in the Women's Division set with base/parallels and an insert card. This will be her only rookie ink this year with a limited first-year lineup, too. Those are recipes for decent value over time.

CALM BEFORE THE STORM
The Box:
2019 Topps Star Wars Authentics Series 2 Box
The Price: Click here
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This one has been on my to-do list for a while now, but it hasn't made the cut for a Buzz Break since there are only two items inside -- a signed photo and a signed card. This one's potential should be obvious based on the autographs shown here -- Daisy Ridley, Harrison Ford, Ewan McGregor and ‎Alden Ehrenreich are just some of the autos found here and a few of those will pay for a few boxes. And these have a pretty solid price right now despite the next film being just nine days away. (Had I not dug in on a couple of NXT boxes already this week, you'd see this one busted here now. I will at some point, though.)

ORIGINAL ART EVERY TIME
The Box:
2019 SportKings Originals 1/1 Art Masterpieces Pack
The Price: Click here
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
While I could have easily finished up here with the Blowout Holiday Pack Party (it's a safer rip) this one came to mind for me first as it includes an original SportKings sketch used for past card releases in every single box. All of those you see on the front are in play here -- I picked those images and designed it myself -- but still haven't dug in on this one kind of like the Star Wars box. It's just one item in this one, so it's a quick break. I will dig in here at some point and think it's worth a look as the oversized (not card-sized) pieces can be pretty impressive.
