MiLB Madness: Keith Comstock, the Madison Neverminds, Savannah Bananas, some pre-minors cardboard & more

Minor league baseball cards from the past can include some weird stuff ... sometimes stuff you wouldn't imagine to be found on a baseball card. Here are some some new fun cards and oddities in this latest edition of MiLB Madness

REMEMBER ME?
The Card:
Keith Comstock 1989 ProCards Las Vegas Stars (CGC 10)
The Buzz On This: This classic prank photo appears on just a standard baseball card -- it's not an error/variation and it's not one that was pulled from production at any point because of its joke photo. It's one that's been out there all these years, isn't super rare and it has had its moments of fame when reporters found it again and again over the years, telling its story and helping pump up interest to where it's definitely a cult classic. I've graded this one more than a few times with good results -- I own top marks in slabs from PSA (a 10), BGS (two 9.5s) and CGC now. This was a recently graded copy of mine that I had planned to use in my monthly Making The Grade series here, but I realized just today that my lineup for MiLB stuff for this series this month was depleted ... so here we are. Only three PSA 10s exist, six BGS 9.5s and three CGC 10s ... none have checked in higher via any company with a decent volume graded between all of them.

Keep reading for more examples of some weird or fun baseball cards (and other stuff) you can find in all baseball these days -- not just in MiLB.

WITH THE LIGHTS OUT, IT'S LESS DANGEROUS ...
The Item:
Madison Mallards 2025 Madison Neverminds replica jersey
The Buzz On This:
These days, the team based in Madison, Wisc. is a collegiate summer squad playing in the Northwoods League, but there's plenty of history in that city. The Madison Muskies were an Oakland A's affiliate from 1982-93 and spawned a few stars for some prime teams. (Jose Canseco's first baseball card? As a Madison Muskie.) But that's not all that was notable back in the day. This specialty night jersey from this year is an ode to Nirvana's landmark 1991 album Nevermind, which was recorded at Butch Vig's Smart Studios in Madison the year before. It's a ducky twist to the album cover with its dollar bill on a hook replaced by a hot dog. This was too classic to pass up, so I recently picked off a $35 adult replica jersey right here in their store. It won't fit me but I don't care ... I just had to have one in my stash of MiLB stuff. Here's how the team revealed its hot dog-loaded plans earlier this year. (My photo of my folded jersey just didn't do it justice, so I went with the promo photo you see here.)

FADE TO BLACK
The Card:
Zac Veen, Robert Hassell & Luis Matos 2022 Topps Heritage Minor League Black parallel (/50)
The Buzz On This: This rarer parallel from the Topps throwback brand that no longer exists for MiLB caught my eye at a good price for a rarer card with it being super-clean, too, considering the black edges. It's not perfect but it's close and it's a take on the Rookie Card design from 1973 Topps with three guys on it who have made it to The Show in the time since this was made. I'm a sucker for oldschool-style multi-player cards and Heritage MiLB, so it was an easy addition.

FUN STUFF ...
The Cards:
2025 Choice Savannah Bananas team set (with extra sample pack?)
The Buzz On This: This team set has a few surprises inside -- some fun cards, naturally, if you know the traveling spectacle and exhibition that is Banana Ball. I had planned a full breakdown and gallery here, but given my Friday afternoon scramble to round up stuff for this month's MiLB roundup, I'll hold some of those surprises for a later time. It's 34 cards and includes a number of players and a few others unique to The Show That's Not The Show. There's also some stuff here I wouldn't mind adding to the graded collection, too. This set is appealing and fun -- you'll see more of it on The Buzz soon.

ACTUALLLY, BEFORE MiLB ...
The Card:
Cliff Floyd 1991 Little Sun High School Prospects (announced /10,000)
The Buzz On This: This 17-year MLB veteran has a lot of baseball cards from his career and these days you can see him on MLB Network talking about the game all these years later. Among his earliest baseball cards is this one from a 36-card set made by a small company that showcased some of the best young talent in the game at the time. The card back explains why this Thornwood Thunderbirds slugger made the cut and was later the 14th overall pick in the 1991 MLB Draft by the Montreal Expos. He's not the biggest name in the set, but he's a good one.
