MLB scorcher: 2020 Bowman 1st Edition arrives with bang
This entry was posted on May 2, 2020
.The Next Big Thing is here ... in more ways than one.
Circumstances of why 2020 Bowman 1st Edition cards exist are a bummer -- the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the arrival of the standard release that's an annual collecting staple of many -- but this simpler logo-enhanced version of that set is starting out of the gates perhaps hotter than anyone could have imagined. Why? Prospectors and New York Yankees fans want to get their hands on the first MLB cards of a potential future star in the first prospect release of the year.
The unusual conditions that led to this one -- Topps' primary printing location was closed with the standard Bowman cardboard left playing the waiting game -- also led to a non-traditional release format for the 1st Edition created elsewhere. This release was initially offered via Topps.com by the pack -- limit 24 packs (one box) -- and sold out quickly over the span of its three initial public offerings. A portion of the print run also was allocated to a number of Topps dealers, too, to help their businesses in this unusual and challenging time. (That said, we're buying these boxes as it's firmly on the Blowout's Most Wanted list -- keep reading.)
The Jasson Dominguez Sky Blue Foil parallel you see above? It's got an asking price of $2,999 right now on eBay -- but that may not even be the craziest development so far.
Dominguez's base cards have sold for as much as $288 on eBay with consistent sales at $200 a pop right now. Asking prices in active auctions? They're actually higher right now -- and we haven't even seen multiple copies of all of the various parallel versions to be found in this release. His cards have Sky Blue (every other pack), Blue (/150), Yellow (/75), Gold (/50), Orange (/25), Red (/5) and 1/1 Platinum parallels -- and there's also likely an autographed version to be found. None have hit eBay yet, but you can see a sampling of Dominguez's color -- and other cards -- pulled on Night 1 of 2020 Bowman 1st Edition via BlowoutTV with Houdini in the gallery below.

This release is not solely a Dominguez show -- Bowman is always deep with potential -- but it's early in the life of the product right now as Topps just began shipping this week. A Blue Bobby Witt Jr. (/150) has an asking price of $549.99, while his Sky Blue foil card has a high asking price on eBay of $449.99. You can expect the rarer copies of key players' cards in this one to have meatier asking and sale prices, too. A Red Bobby Dalbec card -- just five copies made -- has an asking price of $349.99. That, along with the prices for the easier copies of the bigger names, should give you an idea of what might come for those tougher, key finds.
Autographs are also in the mix here, but they're not the easiest of finds at one in 310 packs -- one in every 13 boxes -- so there aren't many on eBay just yet but you can expect the likely Dominguez ink (we don't know who's in it for ink, but I'd expect him to be in there) to blow all of the prices here out of the water. The collector who pulled an Aristides Aquino Atomic Refractor 1st Edition Rookie Card auto (/100) on BlowoutTV has it on eBay with an asking price of $5,000. Other prospect ink auctions are just starting to pop up.
Blowout's Most Wanted list now includes 2020 Bowman 1st Edition in box form -- the current price will be seen here when it is active (below) and you can grab your own boxes right here.
