2016 Donruss
Buzz Buys: Derrick Henry, Roger Maris' pants, Star Wars, AEW, a few Crimson Tide greats, Hammerin' Hank, Machete & more
Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals just might be to rip fewer boxes this year and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.
So, with that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ... and this time around there's a bit of everything but more on the affordable side.
--
MONSTER YEAR, SIMPLE ROOKIE CARD
The Card: Derrick Henry 2016 Donruss Rookie Card (BGS 9.5)
The Price: $9
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I made this pick-up just before he started his recent run of big games mostly because it seemed underpriced for the grade, which is a solid quad 9.5. Interestingly, just 25 copies of this card have been slabbed and nothing has checked in below this mark. It makes me think you could pick off a factory set at a pretty cheap price if you want to dabble with grading key cards here -- and there are a few where you could do pretty well with some 9.5s or 10s. About that price ... one of the other 9.5s had an asking price of $40 on eBay when I looked. Sure, the action here is heavier on Optic, ink and rarer parallels, but simple RCs of affordable sets seem to be go-to cards for more and more people these days.

Making the Grade (November): Dak Prescott, Luka Doncic, Magic Johnson & John Cena rookies, Robert Mueller, the first perfect Keith Comstock, Meghan Markle's MLB card & more
Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.
Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ...
The Card: Dak Prescott 2016 Donruss #362 Rookie Card
The Reason Bought: It takes a pretty good deal for one of my buys to lead off here instead of one of my newly submitted grades, but this one was just that. This is one of those cards that is relatively available if you want to chase one down and slab it for some fun or profit. My cost? About $22, which might seem high generally speaking but isn't for its grade -- this was about half the price of the other cards in the same grade where I was looking at the time. They are even higher now.
The Grade: BGS 10Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 B10 Total Population 0 0 0 2 1 1 8 30 305 26 0 373 Reality Check: This one is just a half-grade away from a perfect BGS Black slab and the percentage of cards to get this mark is pretty low vs. the overall total. That's what surprised me here more and prompted the pick-up. It's a relatively heavily graded card, too, which you'd think would have resulted in more 10s. (Paper stock can be more pesky than Optic stuff when it comes to grading, though.)
Keep reading for more of this month's big selection of pick-ups and new slabs for Buzz.

Black November Wave 8 is here ... and here are five deals to consider
If you hadn't noticed, there are a number of boxes with discounted prices right now over on the mothership as BlowoutCards.com is in the midst its Black November sales now.
Wave 8 is here -- and it's a huge "mega wave" of more than 170 products -- and many of the discounts were dramatic enough that Buzz had to sit down and ponder the possibilities in many of the boxes and cases -- and here are five boxes/cases that caught this collector’s eye.
2011 Wheels Element hobby boxes (and cases)
Chase Elliott is an established young star in NASCAR these days but back when this one arrived he was one of the "Undiscovered Elements" newcomers who got the nod for their first card appearances and first autographs. Elliott, the son of Hall of Famer and former Cup champ Bill, was just 15 at the time. He signed two cards in this release -- a standard limited to 225 copies and a red-ink version limited to 25. Atop this, he didn't have any other ink until 2014 when he arrived with a hot start that included a pair of NASCAR victories before he had even graduated from high school. At that time, his autos were easy $100 bills and people paid as much as $500 for the Red. They've settled down now -- and he's got plenty of ink since -- but these are still the first and among the most-unique cards he'll ever have. (There's a Rookie Card in the standard set, too.) There are plenty of other highlights here but this one's the closest thing to awesome ... at least that's what some guy named Bill from Dawsonville said.Keep reading for more from this weekend's big wave.

Potential No. 1 pick A.J. Puk appears on plenty of cards before MLB Draft
With the MLB Draft set for Thursday night, we'll soon have a new crop of prospects attached to their professional teams and new players that collectors can now focus upon.
Thanks to various high school all-star sets and USA Baseball releases from Panini America, many of the players who'll be tabbed for future greatness already have cardboard.
That includes potential No. 1 overall pick A.J. Puk, a 6-foot-7 left-handed pitcher for the Florida Gators who was previously drafted in the 35th round by the Detroit Tigers out of high school back in 2013.

Panini America's flagship baseball card release for the year is here in the form of 2016 Donruss, which is a brand that packs three hits per hobby box and even some chicken. The brand is one that relies on the staples of collecting -- top players from the past and present, autographs, memorabilia, strong photos, vibrant designs and more -- while also harkening back to 1982 and other past Donruss releases.
And more is what you just might find inside a box.
The Famous San Diego Chicken stars in 2016 Donruss from Panini America
There's a surprise to be found in some packs of 2016 Donruss that officially arrives Wednesday as cards of Ted Giannoulas -- aka The Famous San Diego Chicken -- can be found inside.
Card No. 151 in the set is not a veteran, Hall of Famer or rookie -- it's a card of the world-famous and Hall of Famer mascot.
But more important than that card and all of its parallels? There are memorabilia cards and autographed memorabilia cards of the legendary mascot to be found as part of the product's overall nod back to 1982 -- the year of the Chicken's "Rookie Card."
Nicknames, honors likely part of variation chase in 2016 Donruss
While The San Diego Chicken's memorabilia cards might be the biggest draw of them all when 2016 Donruss baseball cards arrive next week, there will still be plenty to chase with a hit-loaded and insert-loaded flagship set (see our First Buzz here) from Panini America.
And among them just might be variations.
Panini unleashed a preview gallery of 150 cards on Friday, and a handful stood out as having quirks similar to last year's variations.
Panini teases what could be most-unique memorabilia cards ever
Panini America posted this photo online this weekend with a simple statement.
"Why did this chicken cross the road? That's easy: To become a clucking cool memorabilia card in @paniniamerica's upcoming 2016 Donruss baseball."
If you've read The Buzz this past week, then it's not a surprise -- but here are more details.
