Making the Grade (March): Young MVPs, iconic Hall of Famers, Silent Bob, March Madness, a Future Superstar & more
Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.
Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ...
The Card: 2014 Topps Chrome Update #MB46 Mookie Betts RC
The Reason Graded: I didn't buy a ton of Mega Boxes when these arrived five years ago, but I did land this card, which is a Rookie Debut version for then Red Sox rookie and now-reigning American League MVP Mookie Betts. This card is an ironic classic in that he's captured taking the field at Yankee Stadium. That aspect of the photo isn't as easily seen in Chrome form, but I opted to get this pricier version of the card graded. I'll probably grade some more of my others in the future. For now, though, this one leads the way.
The Grade: BGS 9.5Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 B10 Total Population 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 4 18 0 0 23 Reality Check: I wasn't that confident in this one as I just have bad luck at times with Chrome cards, but this one turns out to be one of the highest-graded copies. I'll take it, especially considering what I've got up next.

A SUPER SELLER SO FAR
The Item: 2018 Cryptozoic Supergirl Season 1 Melissa Benoist autograph (Supergirl version)
The Price: $480 after 11 bids with five-plus days remaining
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This latest arrival and the first for The CW series has a number of autographs to watch but none are bigger than those signed by Supergirl herself -- and Melissa Benoist actually has at least three different cards for collectors to look for. So far, three of her autos have sold for $999.50 or more on eBay and her rare dual-wardrobe cards found in this one -- what looks like one blue suit swatch and one red cape swatch -- also has pushed $800. This one is a live auction so it should be interesting to see how this one ends. The other big sales have been Buy-It-Now or Best Offer sales -- and the asking prices are higher than $1,000 for the active auctions right now

Finest T206 set gets broken up and sold via Heritage Auctions
The finest set of 1909-11 T206 baseball cards is on the market -- and it's being broken up -- this month via Dallas-based Heritage Auctions where it's expected to be a record-breaker.
"For hundreds of trading card collectors, this is the auction event of a lifetime," said Chris Ivy, director of sports collectibles for Heritage. "This auction is the vault door swinging open to reveal treasures unavailable anywhere else."
It's a lot of 520 cards that includes nine PSA 10s -- only 13 in all exist at that grade -- and nearly all of the cards in this one are the highest-graded specimens of their kind for this landmark set. More than 100 of the cards are PSA 9s and only one is graded below a PSA 7 (it's a PSA 6).

Portion of Jack Smalling autograph collection to hit auction
Depending on your age, you might not know the name Jack Smalling -- but he wrote the book on through-the-mail autograph collecting back in the day when most autographs weren't just a click away.
While The Baseball Autograph Collector's Handbook is up to its 19th edition today with addresses for more than 90 percent of known living major leaguers, coaches and umpires inside, it's the fruits of his publishing passion -- his autographs -- that are on the auction block in one single lot coming to the auction from Heritage Auctions next month.
"Many, if not most, of Smalling's greatest successes came from trails long since gone cold, but when Smalling first took up his hobby in 1962, quite a few Dead Ball Era legends still walked the Earth," said the auction listing. "And if not the players themselves, then their children or grandchildren, pleased in that pre-Internet age that somewhere, someone still remembered the man. They were all too happy to drop a cancelled check or a clipping from an old lease into the supplied self-addressed, stamped envelope in fulfillment of Smalling's request. More than a half century later, Smalling's collection of autographs numbers in the six figures."

Rare Kris Bryant autos, party passes, sketches & cuts command cash from Topps' historic Transcendent release
With 52 autographs in every box -- as well as a posh party invitation -- it doesn't take a lot to see the dollar signs inside each $25,000 box of 2016 Topps Transcendent Collection baseball cards.
Those invites alone get a good chunk of change back (details here) and each case's 1/1 Kris Bryant autograph using one of the 65 historic Topps designs commands some, too. Those cards have sold for as much as $2,182 on eBay (so far) and all seven sold have gone for at least $1,000.
Meanwhile, the asking or bid prices in current auctions are over the $1,000 mark in all but one instance and range as high as $7,250 for those in the historic set.
But the priciest find found inside one of those 65 silver briefcases? It's much more impressive.
Unique Mickey Mantle autograph among cool items in Steiner auction
Sometimes they just want a unique autograph.
Some vintage collectors out there may have a little bit of everything, which leaves them searching for unique pieces once they have all of the basics from when a past player was on the field. Sure, there are countless new cardboard creations for icons like Mickey Mantle, but this piece on the auction block from Steiner Sports is a bit different than the typical Mantle autograph.
Need a 2016 Topps Dynasty baseball card checklist? It's right here ...
The latest high-end Topps baseball card set is on its way soon and that means it's time to see a checklist.
Topps released the final list for 2016 Topps Dynasty on Wednesday -- a week before its release -- and this will be one of the first places where Derek Jeter's autographs will be found as part of his new deal with the company.
But he's not alone.
Is your 1967 Topps baseball card set truly complete? There's a chance it might not be with this card ...
Is your 1967 Topps baseball card set complete? There's a chance it might not be now.
A funny thing happened when Buzz was working to confirm the various errors and variations in the 1967 card set in the weeks before the arrival of this year's homage, 2016 Topps Heritage.
There appears there could be a third version of Mike McCormick's card No. 86. When examining a group of 1967 cards, Buzz noticed a possible version (above) that's not cataloged anywhere among the various error & variations lists or noted on any population reports despite this set being 49 years old. It's a dramatically different version of the card for the Washington Senators pitcher who was traded to the San Francisco Giants, which is the reason for the variations to exist.
It turns out that this card is from the 1967 O-Pee-Chee set, though there is only one version cataloged there. Could a third version like this exist for the Topps card? Or are there two versions for O-Pee-Chee? Keep reading for the details.
National Treasures includes legendary first for John McGraw
He was known as "Little Napoleon" during his 17 seasons as a player that began way back in 1891 and during his 36 seasons as a manager that ended back in 1932, but the memorabilia cards of Baseball Hall of Famer John McGraw found in 2015 Panini National Treasures are a big deal.
Why? They're unprecedented in hobby history.
