Topps NBA arrival comes with big splash, big sales and more

It's a new era -- or at least the return of one -- as Topps' first NBA release under its new deal with the league license dropped this week with the arrival of 2025-26 Topps.
It's the first Topps release since its abbreviated 2009-10 campaign when Panini America took over the league license on an exclusive basis, ending a non-exclusive Topps run that had began in 1992-93. Before that, Topps NBA cardboard happened for a 1957-58 set and then continuously from the 1969-70 edition to the 1981-82 release before it bowed out. While there have been plenty of stops and starts for basketball and a number of players on the cardboard court, this run appears to be a long-term deal as Fanatics is amassing licenses with the major leagues when it comes to collecting -- MLB and the NBA now as well as the NFL beginning next year. So far, big rollouts have included NBA Debut patches worn by rookies in their first games as well as gold Logoman patches for award-winners to go from their unis and later into cardboard -- but both of those are too new to be an in-pack reality for this release. The company's slogan for its turn with the ball is "it's our game now" -- as subtle as a Shaquille O'Neal rebounding elbow -- but the people are, so far, showing that it's their game and their cardboard world -- and Topps is living in it (while making their cardboard). The auction action is heavy after just one day with big asking prices, big pulls, some big sales and some big demand for some names from this release with a big print run that's helping make sure everybody gets a little piece of the action if they want some.
There have been release parties with VIP guest appearances, corporate SWAG and other prizes -- all one would and should expect for a new-license rollout -- and there's also been a little bit of cardboard controversy so far, too, that's really just more of a head's up scenario for collectors to know about more than anything truly salacious as people tear into packs looking for the first Lakers autographs of LeBron James (he had been an Upper Deck exclusive with no NBA-licensed ink since it bowed out with the Panini deal), the first Spurs autographs of Victor Wembanyama and, of course, the new No. 1 pick on the box, Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg.
Keep reading for that and a look at some of the big finds so far.
SpongeBob Superfractors commanding top dollar from new set

Somebody in Bikini Bottom really, really, really loves Superfractors.
A quick look at eBay -- and only eBay -- shows nearly 40 completed auctions for those golden 1/1s from 2025 Topps Chrome SpongeBob SquarePants and the prices would pay for many a Krabby Patty.
How much? Well, the top card sold for a cool $50,000 -- and it's not alone. And, well, that one might not even be the biggest card of the bunch from the recent Topps release.

With all the ballot talk, here's a completed collecting project

There's been plenty of focus on ballots -- justifiably as it's November in a presidential election year -- but Buzz completed a collecting project this week that was all about them. It's one that's easy to do in whatever way you want to do it ... and without breaking the bank.
What was it? I completed a career run of my player's appearances on MLB All-Star ballots -- and I did it with just a couple clicks.
It's complete by year but I'm still at least one ballot short of a master list -- at least that as I know of thanks to those pesky parallels that are apparently a thing here, too. Some years have a ballpark version of the ballot and then a sponsored one to be found out there in the real world. Why? Well, back in the day voting wasn't exclusively done online, so selected companies would have ballots at their stores. For example, for some odd reason way, way, back in the 1990s I remember MLB ballots at Subway, but that doesn't apply here ... not this time.

RED-HOT RIGHT NOW
The Item: Elly De La Cruz 2022 Bowman Heritage Chrome Red Refractor auto (/5)
The Price: $4,000 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: The new arrival in MLB is just two games into his big-league career but his combination of speed and power -- and his worthiness to don Eric Davis' No. 44 (another speed and power guy there) in Cincinnati -- is getting the spotlight. He's already got a double, a triple and a homer along with three runs and two RBI while hitting .429 after two games. His Rookie Cards won't appear until 2024 releases -- he missed the deadline so his first Topps Now cards carry "call-up" labels -- but he's got plenty of cardboard. He's pushing 700 different card appearances in prospect releases with cards since 2021 and more than 200 of those are autographs, too. This one comes from the delayed Bowman Heritage but is arguably the right color for max appeal. I don't think that price will get met but it could ... he's a top talent that will be talked about until he comes back to reality. Well, if ... he hit .298 with 71 doubles, 22 triples, 49 homers, 190 RBI and 71 stolen bases in 263 MiLB games over four seasons. Baseball America had him ranked No. 8 in all of MiLB entering this season and he was also a top-10 guy via MLB and Baseball Prospectus rankings.

Goldin Marketplace launches today as a new eBay competitor

If you're on the hunt for new items in your collection, there's a new place to look.
The Goldin Marketplace (click here) launched today as a new option for buying and selling cards as well as other collectibles from pop culture and history such as video games, VHS and toys. It's a service that will supplement Goldin’s auction platform while also offering authentication and grading services from PSA as well as vault services. There also will be weekly auctions to go with its larger headline-making Elite auctions.
"There are too many pain points in collecting today," said Goldin CEO Ross Hoffman. "From authentication and grading, to listing, selling, communicating with buyers, getting paid and then shipping again. We want to take the work out of collecting and allow collectors to focus more on what they love. By integrating all of our services and capabilities into one platform, the Goldin Marketplace is creating the easiest, safest, most trusted way to enjoy collecting. Collecting should be fun, and by eliminating friction we’re making it a more enjoyable experience for everyone."
