Making the Grade (May): A perfect Victor Wembanyama Prizm, old comics & mags, new MLB stars, Stacy's Mom + plenty more
Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.
Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ...
MY FIRST WEM-BAM!-YAMA ...
The Card: Victor Wembanyama 2023-24 Panini Prizm Green Prizms -- Rookie Card parallel
The Reason Graded: My first -- and actually only -- batch of Prizm NBA blasters included this gem and I knew instantly that it would be in a slab once I saw its centering and then no issues among the sometimes-pesky edges for Prizm and similar stock of the last few years. (Sometimes clean ... sometimes not.) In this case, I had this one in a box headed for grading even before I had its Buzz Break box broken down and posted here ... and it's a solid keeper for me vs. my Hoops finds that all had things that me scared off of slabbing them.
The Grade: CGC 10 (Pristine)Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 P10 Total Population 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 2 Reality Check: That's pretty much the perfect scenario isn't it? Top grade for a retail blaster -- at suggested retail price even -- pull ... even if there's a curtain that seemed to lather up some people out there. This won't be the last you see of this generational talent in this series ... but this is it for this month's slabs.

FROM 61* TO CARDBOARD ...
The Card: Roger Maris & Barry Pepper 2021 Leaf Ultimate Sports The Ultimate Duo (/12)
The Price: $25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This one flew under my radar for sure until I recently spotted it and had to grab it instantly. For those who don't know, actor Berry Pepper played Roger Maris in 61* -- trailer here -- a 2001 Billy Crystal movie made for HBO. It's easily among the best baseball movies out there for accuracy as Crystal is an obsessive Yankees fan who notes it all in behind-the-scenes segments you can see on the DVD. This one pairs a piece of what is likely a Maris bat with a piece of what looks like a leather jacket for Pepper -- not the most-ideal combo of items, but it is what it is. This is the only card pairing the two and it's the easiest version to find -- the rest of the parallels and printing plates have lower numbering here -- all /6 and below ... no wonder this one was off my radar for three years. I simply hadn't seen any of them.

IT'S FOOTBALL SEASON ...
The Item: Paul "Bear" Bryant cut autograph (BAS authenticated)
The Price: Less than a lot of new hobby boxes.
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This pricier (for me) pick-up actually came in the last week of last year but I decided to hold onto posting it here until it's the right time -- and since football season is upon us, well, that means now's the time. In the fall of 2019, I bought a starter auto of this legendary Alabama Crimson Tide coach who before Nick Saban was easily the greatest in school history (right now, it's perhaps a toss-up) -- that one was an inscribed nickname-only auto -- for a lot less as it was a cut from a paperback book. This one? It's signed on thick, red paper (almost a light cardboard stock) and I know exactly where it came from -- a 1975 copy of his autobiography, Bear: The Hard Life and Good Times of Alabama's Coach Bryant. I have a clean-but-ratty copy of that book somewhere in my stash from an antiques store find 20-some years ago, but when this popped up from a West Coast mega-dealer of vintage (and selected modern-player) autographed stuff and plenty more I bit. I actually prefer the cut auto feel here in its case vs. the full book as it can be viewed when you find it vs. tucked behind a cover. A lot of Bryant autographs are found these days -- 40 years after his death -- are on signed copies of this book or on a style of autographed photo or two that is nearly always found inscribed and dated to fans or boosters from back in the day. While a photo (preferably slabbed) would be nice, this is a better, simpler item. Authenticated photos can cost less but look iffier depending on condition. I like this one -- and it's card-like feel -- and, heck, I might even do more. They are out there and findable.

Piece of The Game opens New York card shop
WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. — Piece of The Game Sports Cards and Collectibles, a one-of-a-kind sports cards and collectibles store, opens its flagship location today.
Moving operations from an online platform, which serves some of the largest sports collectibles markets in the U.S., has been a goal of owner David Prince for the last two years. Their first location -- off bustling U.S. Route 9 in Wappingers Falls -- is the prototype for future stores already slated to open in Westchester County, N.Y., and Mahwah, N.J., over the next year. The goal is to "have a truly unique and immersive experience for avid sports cards and collectible patrons." There is a ribbon-cutting ceremony today at 4 p.m. with a public opening tomorrow at 11 a.m.
"As a card collector since I was a child, I wanted to create a space that allows the cards to be displayed as they should be," Prince said. "Cards are now considered alternative assets, similar to fine art, and my store displays cards and collectibles as such."

COLLEGE FOOTBALL ICONS
The Card: Paul "Bear" Bryant & Knute Rockne 2010 Panini Century Collection Souvenir Stamps Sports Combos (two stamps dual material) (/100)
The Price: More than I'll admit ... but it's a keeper.
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This is just the second time I've grabbed one of these key memorabilia cards with a piece of a fedora worn by Bryant and a jacket from Rockne -- two of the greatest coaches in the history of college football. Rockne has a number of memorabilia cards out there (more than 50) but Bryant only has a literal handful of cards -- and almost all of them were in this release. Why? Hats aren't all that big. As far as I know, all but a 1/1 card or two is in this release ... meanwhile, the prices for the few Bryant fedoras that may exist -- if they ever hit the market again -- won't be card-conducive in the future since they are pricey. The last two Bryant houndstooth fedoras auctioned? Together, they topped $100,000 on the auction block. These are limited to only 100 copies and I hadn't picked up one of these in a long time. Why this time? You never know when more might pop up.

Panini & Funko team up for series of Funko Pop! Trading Cards
NBA and NFL collectors will have new stuff to chase thanks to a new agreement between Panini America and Funko.
Funko Pop! Trading Cards will be on the way later this year beginning with basketball and football and "incorporate Panini’s globally popular Prizm trading card brand for both the NBA and NFL. Similar to the very popular Pop! Albums and Pop! Comic Covers," according to a company announcement.
"We are excited to enter into this collaboration with Funko," said Jason Howarth, Panini's VP of Marketing. "The success of our Panini trading cards in the collectible space along with the success that Funko is experiencing in the vinyl figure collectibles space makes this the ideal collaboration for sports fans and consumers."

THE CORRECT COLOR OF PRIZM
The Card: Tua Tagovailoa 2020 Panini Prizm Draft Picks Red Prizms
The Price: $20
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I didn't pull anything for this guy in a number of retail Prizm boxes and packs so far this year, so I opted just to grab the parallel I wanted the most -- the one with the right color for his team on this card that should have been found in one of my mega boxes but wasn't. I had an eye on slabbing this one but it has a surface issue that nixed that idea ... so we'll see what happens from here on out. Once new cardboard starts flowing, I'm sure there will be more options out there. Maybe I'll grab and slab one of these ... or maybe something else.

BIG INK
The Card: Mark McGwire 2017 Topps Tier One Tier One Autographs (/30)
The Price: $45.75
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: For years, my only Mark McGwire autograph was one on a somewhat average-condition Oakland A's World Series team-signed ball that I found in an unusual way and got via a trade. (In short, it was sitting in a mug on co-worker's desk. He didn't know what team it was ... it was just his dad's ball that had been brought in for some reason. There it sat ... until I happened to pick it up and look. Then I picked up my jaw.) I added a similar and different item in recent years -- a bat -- and both pieces are 100-percent legit but without authentication. (That happened back in the day when teams signed items ... without merch deals and MLB Authentication around.) This time, though, I added a fresh McGwire release that's on both the rarer side and the cheaper side since the price was right (and dramatically lower than others out there for comparable cards). McGwire has always been a pricier auto -- he didn't sign much during his career except for very early on (before certified auto cards) -- and then became an Upper Deck guy after his record-setting years. Topps got him back in the fold in 2014 releases and he's also been in Panini stuff. I liked the price and the look of this one, which has him watching a homer from late in the 1998 season.

Funko Pop! MLB lineup emerges for 2020 baseball season
If you're a Funko Pop! collector and a baseball fan, you might be busy collecting 'em all this summer.
Nearly 20 toys were revealed for the 2020 MLB Funko Pop! lineup and they include some of the biggest young stars in the game today as well as a few established veterans.
Just three teams have players represented more than once, meaning almost half of the MLB franchises have a star found here.
Major Leaguers Ricky Vaughn & Jake Taylor get Funko toys
It's a good thing they can't talk, otherwise they might not work in the toy aisle.
Two of the stars from Major League will be hitting collectors' hands in a new way soon as Funko unveiled its plans for three Funko Pop! toys for the classic 1989 film coming soon.
The toys don't appear to be carrying MLB licensing, but that's not a problem with some of the figures.
New-look Marvel legends coming in new Funko Pop! toy wave
Avengers: Endgame may have changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever, but it's also changed a few characters in other places.
Like on their Funko Pop! toys.
Funko revealed its plans for seven new toys in its Pop! Marvel portion of the line on Thursday and we get several new looks on seven new toys coming soon.
Funko reveals even more Stranger Things 3 toys to come
You may not have finished Stranger Things 3 just yet, but there are already more toys on the way.
Just minutes ago, Funko revealed a new wave of Funko Pop as well as Mystery Minis to come showing us more of the characters and moments from the hit series' new season that dropped on Netflix today.
The Minis will include Jim Hopper, Lucas Sinclair, Will Byers, Eleven, Max Mayfield, Steve, Mike Wheeler, Joyce Byers, Dustin Henderson, Billy, Karen Wheeler, Erica Sinclair and Nancy Wheeler in a variety of moments and with figures as rare as one in 72 packs.
A League of Their Own Funko Pop! toys arrive soon
There's no crying in baseball ... but there will be Funko Pop! toys.
A League of Their Own -- Penny Marshall's 1992 landmark film about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League -- will have its first Funko toys soon.
Just two toys make up this first wave as teased by the Everett, Wash.-based company on Monday.
Funko readies big wave of Stranger Things 3 toys & more

More than a dozen past and present hit TV shows are coming to the toy aisle soon after Funko revealed more than 60 new Pop! figures set to arrive this year.
The lineup? The Big Bang Theory, Rick & Morty, Cheers, Sanford and Son, Hercules, Xena: Warrior Princess, The Addams Family, Community, The Office, Dawson's Creek, Billions, Jeopardy! and even Wheel of Fortune.
The Big Bang lineup, for example, includes new looks for Leonard, Sheldon, Howard, Rajesh, Amy, Bernadette, Stuart and even a memorable one where Penny becomes addicted to online gaming -- a figure complete with Cheetos in her hair.
Funko readies new wave of WWE toys with two exclusives
You can't see him, but he's one of six new Funko Pop! toys for WWE stars revealed this week.
He's 16-time WWE champ John Cena and this clear toy is an Amazon-only piece that leads off the newest wave of wrestling toys for fans that will begin arriving soon. He's waving his hand in front his face just as he does before "you can't see me" and the five-knuckle shuffle is applied to his opponent.

Funko Pop! toys for Office Space are on the way and the company behind them unveiled a lineup of four figures that fans of the 1999 film will have to have ... right beside their slightly charred red Swingline stapler.
