Making the Grade (July): Iconic Rookie Cards, Mr. America, Jay-Z, Mr. 3,000, old comics, indy wrestling, WWE Prizm, Conor McGregor, Hammerin' Hank & more in this super-sized edition
Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.
Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ...
BETTER THAN LAST TIME ...
The Card: Ja Morant 2019-20 Panini Chronicles Luminance #165 -- Rookie Card
The Reason Graded: Somewhere in a past item in this series there's a Pink parallel of this cool card buried in a post as it was one of only a few bummers I've had with a low mark -- one that was too low for my taste as I had apparently missed a rough edge. This time? Well, this was the one I didn't send in back then and that's because I thought it had an edge spot that I thought might nix a top grade ... but I was wrong again. With this card having an iconic photo -- one that makes it easily his best RC to me (I'm merely a casual NBA ripper) -- I threw it in a bulk sub to see how I'd do. It's an absolutely epic photo ... even though it was a missed dunk.
The Grade: CSG 10Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 P10 Total Population 0 3 0 0 2 4 22 138 13 249 0 431 Reality Check: This is a card with a pretty big volume graded -- and a good chunk of those checking in lower than mine. All in all, it's a win that takes away the sting from last time.

Buzz Buys: Tua Tagovailoa, Project 2020, Star Wars toys, Silent Bob's mom, The Last Dance, Starrcast & plenty more
Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.
So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys.

THE CORRECT COLOR OF PRIZM
The Card: Tua Tagovailoa 2020 Panini Prizm Draft Picks Red Prizms
The Price: $20
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I didn't pull anything for this guy in a number of retail Prizm boxes and packs so far this year, so I opted just to grab the parallel I wanted the most -- the one with the right color for his team on this card that should have been found in one of my mega boxes but wasn't. I had an eye on slabbing this one but it has a surface issue that nixed that idea ... so we'll see what happens from here on out. Once new cardboard starts flowing, I'm sure there will be more options out there. Maybe I'll grab and slab one of these ... or maybe something else.

Shohei Ohtani needs a driver's license ... and other even stranger things learned from 2018 Bowman baseball cards
Have you looked at your 2018 Bowman card backs yet? We're a week into the release of the first prospecting baseball card brand of the year and there are a number of oddities to be discovered on the cards in this set ... if you choose to flip them over and read the "Up Close" blurbs.
One of the weirdest revelations -- one that will also appear on the back of his Superfractor auto if it's found (the $75,000 offer still stands, too) -- is the fact that Shohei Ohtani doesn't have a driver's license. (The fact that the modeled his hitting after Hideki Matsui isn't surprising given his first month in the majors.)
That's not the only weird fact on the backs of some 2018 Bowman baseball cards ...
Grammy Foundation auctions include big autographs, rare memorabilia to benefit charities
The 58th Grammy Awards have come and gone but the Grammy Foundation's auctions have plenty of time remaining on eBay with autographs and memorabilia from some of music's biggest names of today available -- and some big names from the past, too.
Among the more than 100 auctions is the ensemble you see above. It's the priciest piece of memorabilia as the bidding stands now -- three original copies of books self-published by rock icon Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Doors.
An American Prayer, The Lords: Notes on Vision and The New Creatures were printed in 1969 and 1970 and just 100 copies of Lords and Creatures were made. Just 500 copies of Prayer exist. The copies belonged to a friend of Morrison and are being sold in one lot. Its opening bid is $5,000. (Update: The books sold for $17,755 after 55 bids.)
The most-expensive item so far is a pair of tickets to next year's Grammys and the after-party. Keep reading for the basics on a few more Grammy auctions.
