Making the Grade (July): Shotzi, Broadway Joe, Beyoncé, Bo, vintage, Shohei Ohtani, MLB icons, Chong, Pink, WWE & more
Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.
Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ... an edition heavy on MLB and WWE but with some surprises.
A FULL SIG THAT'S TWICE AS NICE ...
The Cards: Shotzi Blackheart 2020 Topps WWE NXT Roster Autographs
The Reason Graded: If you're a regular reader then you know it's no secret that I've busted tons of these boxes and picked off tons of her cards as the WWE's Tank Girl is high on my collecting radar. Why? She's unique and fun -- and the name and character is self-made, too, so if her WWE run were to ever come to an end, well then "Shotzi" won't. In this case, I pulled both of these autos myself and since it's among her first certified sigs as well as a more of a full auto (unlike how she signs now) I'm eventually slabbing all I own ... but not all at once.
The Grade: CSG 10Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 P10 Total Population 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 3 0 6 Reality Check: The stock here is skinny and since there are on-card autos they are prone to having some issues at times ... so this pair of 10s was an exciting return. The pop report looks pretty good, too -- I really need to get all my stuff organized to see how many of those are mine and how many more I need to slab ... eventually they'll all get graded. Why? I'm a collector and I like this one (and it's parallels) that much.

Buzz Buys: Mickey Mantle, Rosario Dawson, The Babe, Bo's RC, WWE icons & newcomers, old magazines, comics & plenty more
Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.
So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ...

MY LAST FROM THE PROJECT ...
The Card: Mickey Mantle 2021 Topps Project70 by Alex Pardee (/12,112)
The Price: $19.99 via Topps
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This artist captured most of the big-print-run attention in the second Project and this card that mashed his monster vibes with Mantle's 1952 Topps card and then 1981 Topps was the last one to get my attention and a buy last year. (Or was it this year?) Anyway, this one recently arrived in my mailbox and since this year's Project100 has arrived with a totally different approach and a number of changes -- not all good ones in my view -- I figured I'd drop this here. The print run of this won't be touched this year -- they're capped at less than half of that for 2022 -- but I suspect I'll be keeping an eye on the offerings. You should keep an eye on the past cards now if you passed before ... and keep an eye open on the new ones, too. You never know where the collecting winds and tastes might spark interest. Some monsters could be waiting.

Superman's Lois Lane, Margot Kidder, dies at age 69
One of the biggest names from 1970s/1980s comic book movies is gone.
Margot Kidder, who played super-reporter Lois Lane in the first four Superman films died on Sunday at her home in Livingston, Mont. She was 69.
Her acting career began in the late-1960s and included roles up until last year, but she's best-known for her time across from Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent/Superman beginning with the landmark 1978 film.
"Nothing prepares anyone for that sudden thing of being world-famous, it was such a shock," she said in a past interview. "It wasn't something I really liked or something I was very good at. I didn't realize how good the movie was until I [had] seen it at the premier in Washington."Buzz 12 in 12: Busting a 1983 Topps 'Superman III' wax pack (Hour 12)

First Lois Lane, Noel Neill, dies at 95
When Superman first came to the big screen in 1948, Lois Lane was played by Noel Neill, a Minnesota-born actress whose father was a newspaper editor.
It tuned out to be a role that helped define a career.
Neill went on to appear in 78 episodes of the Adventures of Superman television series that lasted six seasons and then have cameos in other Superman films as part of a career that spanned seven decades. She died on Monday at age 95 after a long illness.
"Brave, smart, and witty. She embodied the very best qualities of Lois Lane. RIP Noel Neill," read a message on the DC Comics Twitter account.
