Buzz Buys (Oct.): Tiffany Stratton ink, old movies, Bo, Shotzi, retro autographs, old mags, new Hall of Famer & plenty more

Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention. So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ...
--
THERE'S ALWAYS TIME FOR TIFF
The Card: Tiffany Stratton 2024 Panini Instant WWE Red-White-Blue Autograph (/10)
The Price: $49.99 via Panini Instant
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This was an instant buy for me for that price and I suspect that future autos for this rising WWE star will cost more when they happen again via Instant based on asking and sale prices over on eBay that are far higher. (And because Panini has charged more for names who aren't as popular.) It's not a perfect card with the auto running off the sticker to a small degree here (though others I saw were worse with that being part of the "T") but that doesn't matter to me much with this being a personal collection addition. The only question is whether I'll slab it or not and I'm leaning toward no as I don't want any surprises on a solid card. With this victory, she got a title match anywhere and at any time, so this is a key moment upon that rocketship ride to the top as she only started wrestling in any capacity in late 2021 and already has all the skills to pay the bills. (Here's one match to see.) There will be more Strattons to come here as long as the prices don't get too crazy.

Making the Grade (Oct.): Ohtani, Judge, KISS, Clerks, WWE, vintage books, Black Panther, Shotzi, Machete, Maris & more

Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.
Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ...
A MONSTER YEAR ...
The Card: Shohei Ohtani 2018 Topps Heritage High Number -- Rookie Card
The Reason Graded: Ohtani had a monster season without even pitching -- first 50-50 Club member for starters and just short of the National League Triple Crown -- and his big-time potential had me submitting some of my RCs for him earlier this year. Did people expect this kind of showing, though? Probably not -- I know I didn't -- but I know Heritage RCs are my preference, so this one made the cut. The bottom corners seem to be the most-common issue with these cards, but this one was clean and so it made my sub -- and I will have two more on the way to grading, too, so you'll see more of this card during the off-season or by next spring.
The Grade: CGC 10Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 P10 Total Population 1 0 0 1 0 1 32 149 68 181 3 436 Reality Check: The graded volume is high here but perhaps still modest vs. PSA volumes -- I'm good with that -- and this one has only been topped three times. I dig that. This mark isn't that rare but it is one that would be in demand with the two slots below also where many will look.

Book It, Buzz: Landing NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr.

For years now, autographed books coming direct from the publishers -- or direct from the authors themselves -- have been an affordable way to collect ink from notable names in all realms of pop culture.
It's not a perfect system with stamps, fakes and autopens sometimes in the mix -- a problem for publishers to catch as they are not authenticators -- but thanks to dedicated collectors on the Blowout Cards Forum and elsewhere, those problems often get caught and fixed ... or at least become well-known enough to avoid if it's an issue that goes uncorrected.
Getting ink in-person is always best -- book tours still happen, of course -- but landing autographed editions from publishers, online sellers or celebs themselves via their websites or other appearances are common. So, with that said, here's the first of what just might become a monthly department here on The Buzz for this new year
Our second subject and autograph in this ongoing series? NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Collecting Game-used: A nod to The King from a Superstar fan

It was 45 years ago today that Elvis Presley died after a career filled with historic successes but, no, this one isn't showcase for a piece of The King -- though I own cards with pieces with memorabilia he wore in them as those have been made as part of many past card sets.
This one's more in my traditional collecting wheelhouse and a simple piece of memorabilia for a current star over in the wrestling realm who is a fan of Presley as well as other musical acts -- and they were often seen in small ways on her decorated leather jackets worn to the ring. It this one of those jackets? Nah, I don't have a couple grand to land one -- but I totally want to.
This is something far simpler from outside the WWE realm, and back in July in this very Collecting Game-used series you got Part 1. This is a promised follow-up piece that I landed at that same time, and, while this isn't really a "game-used" item, it's 100-percent photo-matched to a shoot over on Instagram.
You can see a hint of it above. Keep reading to see the reveal.
Buzz Buys: Mercedes Varnado ink, promo cards, some old Kellogg's, Roger Maris, WWE icons, magazines & much more

BUZZ FELT RICH ...
The Card: Mercedes Varnado (aka Sasha Banks) 2021 Topps Star Wars Stellar Signatures autograph (/40)
The Price: Less than anybody else (so far)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This is one of those rarer (but not non-existent) times where Buzz paid up for a single card from a new release. Why? It's so premium-priced that single cards are the only way I'll see it -- and this time I'm not alone. It comes from the loaded Stellar Signatures release where only 100 boxes were made with all of them including ink from everybody who's signing for Topps every time. This is Varnado's first Star Wars autograph card and it comes from her role in The Mandalorian, so I figured I'd go there if they dipped enough ... and they did ... at least around the time I grabbed this. They do seem to be drying up, though, even in the weeks since I found mine with the cheapest as I write this being a $499 ask on eBay (for a parallel) with other copies of this base card even higher. This auto (vs. her Banks auto, which I have many copies of) is a lot simpler and the one private signing she did for Star Wars before these -- where they are at least $150 per photo depending on sizes -- showed her sig quality being all over the place. So, with that in mind, I went the card route as a sure thing. This one is clean -- though some cards in this release aren't as crisp -- so I was fine going there. Varnado has had just two other Star Wars autos arrive in the newest Signature Series release but those are stickers ... so I'll wait and see how prices shake out on more. I may not do a ton of them as it's a simple sig, but I knew I needed at least one in my stash and started with the best brand in the land.

Fast Five: Strategies to find bargains in today's hobby

Fast Five is a quick list that might offer a basic starting point for a themed collection or new focus -- five things that could be fun for a beginner or a new way to add something to your stash if you're a grizzled veteran.
This time? Five strategies to find bargains in today's hobby.
COLLECT LAST YEAR & PAST YEARS ...
Dabbling in the new stuff is fun, of course, but it can get pricey these days with an influx of new buyers with possibly deeper pockets than the typical collectors going all Galactus, gobbling up everything in the world out there in the retail wild and plenty elsewhere. Some are flippers, some are rippers ... but both are affecting the prices and volumes of boxes available -- and they don't necessarily make the results inside better. (That's still where luck can be in play.) But one way to fight with them if you're not a Silver Surfer might be to shop with recent past years in mind -- not just the newest rookies. Finding past-year bargains isn't as easy as it once was price-wise, either, but dabbling with boxes where others aren't can still have good results if you know what you're looking for and scout checklists and odds. The Dash Deals section and Bargain Breaks are two places where I'd look while keeping in mind the basic adage that should apply with cardboard ... buy low, sell high. This also leads into my second tip ...Keep reading for four more making up the list this time.

Tom Brady signs autographed memorabilia deal with Fanatics

Tom Brady has another new team.
Fanatics and the Tampa Bay Bucs quarterback revealed on Wednesday morning that they have signed an exclusive multi-year deal for the future Hall of Famer's autographed memorabilia to only be produced in the future via Fanatics Authentic, its memorabilia division. The six-time Super Bowl champ also will sell game-used memorabilia via the company.
“Fanatics is a brand synonymous with authenticity, in both the merchandise they provide and the timeless memories they create that go well beyond a jersey or a football,” Brady said in a prepared release. “Michael Rubin and Fanatics have been great partners throughout the ALL-IN Challenge, and I’m proud to be aligned with a company that is creating these types of genuine connections for people all over the world.”

Buzz's Pick Six: Bargain-priced boxes I'd bust right now ...

Have you seen the latest cool cards from a new release? With so many options for collectors of all kinds arriving every week it's possible you haven't. That's where Buzz comes in -- well at least on one brand you'll see here from time to time in what we're calling Buzz's Pick Six. Simply put, here are six cards from a new arrival that seemed interesting to this collector and we think they might interest you, too.
This week's list: Bargain boxes I'd bust right now ... for a few reasons.

TEN PACKS, TEN AUTOGRAPHS
The Box: 2008 Razor Signature Series baseball box
The Price: Click here
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: With the MLB Draft tonight, I figured I'd give this one a nod both for the power of prospect cards in everything when it comes to baseball these days and for the reality that not all draft classes age that well. This one has an autograph in every pack and a number of guys who made it to MLB and then many who didn't really make much of a mark. Your most-notable autos here at this point are Giancarlo Stanton (in his "Mike" days) as well as Buster Posey, Charlie Blackmon and Eric Hosmer. Others that have been of note at times? Tim Beckham, Pedro Alvarez, Yonder Alonso and Matt Wieters to name a few. An autograph in every pack makes this one fun but it can be a bit of a bummer if you don't land one of the bigger names ... but at the low-price volume still makes for a decent rip and you can find parallels and dual autos, too.Keep reading for five more interesting items in this week's roundup ...
Making the Grade (December): Rare Shohei Ohtani, Star Wars, Pete Alonso, Tim Duncan, vintage, several WWE stars & more

A BIG BLASTER PULL
The Card: Shohei Ohtani 2018 Topps #700B hand on helmet SSP photo variation
The Reason Graded: Not that long ago, I pulled this card from a Series 2 blaster box and decided that it needed a slab since these SSPs appear to be relatively rare -- and I was even more surprised to see how they didn't grade all that well on the pop report. Meanwhile, mine looked very clean ... so I had to do it.
The Grade: BGS 9.5Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 B10 Total Population 0 1 0 0 1 1 0 5 5 1 0 14 Reality Check: Only one card graded better than mine and four others have equaled it while eight cards have checked in at a BGS 9 or lower -- that seems pretty low for a modern card, though the skinny stock here clearly could have issues after these cards hit packaging. I'll admit that this was a pull while Ronald Acuña Jr. hunting in Series 2, but this feels like a win on top of a win with it grading so well after being pulled from a discounted box. Here's hoping his third season is as strong or better than his first two, which are remarkably similar from the batting side.
Keep reading for more of this month's pick-ups and new slabs for Buzz.
