Auction Buzz: Goldin's big sale went beyond Honus Wagner
A copy of the hobby's biggest cards set a new seven-figure auction record this weekend via Goldin Auctions, but it was far from the only notable sale in its two-session October Legends event that included some remarkable modern card sales that fetched six-figures and a collection from Cal Ripken Jr. that topped the million-dollar mark on its own.

The Item: Michael Jordan & Scottie Pippen 2005-06 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Logoman Autographed Patches #DLA-JP (1/1)
The Price: Sold for $295,200 after 11 bids
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: It's not perfect, but it's a one-of-a-kind card -- and it's one of those kinds of cards that's as big as it gets as a dual-logoman auto from the brand that helped usher in the super-premium products that generate huge cash for high-rolling collectors today. It's slabbed as authentic likely due to the top left corner and how it's signed off the edges of the card but, again, it's alone as the only copy made making it a name-your-price piece. And, believe it or not, compared to many of the Exquisite card sales of the last few years this one still feels a tad under-priced.Keep reading for a deeper look at four more big items in the sale that should command attention.
Making the Grade (November): Young MLB stars, a few Hall of Famers, Big Bang Theory, Trish Stratus & an early Dale Jr. card
Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.

FEELING SUPER
The Card: Nick Swisher 2015 Bowman Chrome Superfractor #129 (1/1)
The Reason Bought: I picked this one up off of a collector friend who grabbed it for me, making this just my second Superfractor for my retired favorite player and my third Super overall (I once pulled one from a Heritage blaster) in years of collecting. There's not a whole lot of grading drama to be had on either the grade or the pop report, but I figured I'd lead things off with the rarest card of the bunch for this edition.
The Grade: BGS 9.5Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 B10 Total Population 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 1 Reality Check: This is the only one that exists and it had been on the market for literally years online -- I got it for about $3 more than an offer I made for it when it first arrived and was declined. I've never been all that enamored enough to chase any of them, but this one I'm comfortable with since it was not much more than a basic Bowman box typically goes for at suggested retail price even after landing a top grade.

Update: The above card sold for $1.84 million when the auction ended -- the buyer being a direct-mail company's CEO.

The action is picking up as the clock is winding down for the finale tonight at Goldin Auctions with this 2003-04 Exquisite Collection LeBron James card already topping the $1-million mark with its premium.
There's about nine hours to go before the auction might end with more bids beyond the current 24, but even the current mark would make it the most-expensive basketball card ever sold as well as the priciest modern card in any sport, topping past $900,000-plus sales of key Mike Trout autos via Goldin.
The Runnemede, N.J.-based auction house has a number of other big-ticket memorabilia pieces and interesting items in its current auction. (Don't believe me? Hit that link and look at the first six items -- they're huge and don't make my list this time.)

Two Superfractor autos top $100,000 & modern NBA & NFL cases are scorchers in first night of Heritage spring auction
The first night of Dallas-based Heritage Auctions' three-day Spring Sports Catalog Auction opened with some serious firepower that wasn't just about all of those vintage rarities that just shouldn't exist anymore.
It also included some impressive sales of rare singles from modern cardboard -- and some modern cases that probably don't exist anymore in high volume as the treasures inside them can command huge wads of cash, too.
Among five cards that commanded six-figure sales last night was the 2010 Bowman Chrome Draft Picks Superfractor 1/1 autograph of former NL MVP Christian Yelich, which sold for $111,000 in a PSA 9 slab. Joining it was a 2011 Bowman Chrome Draft Picks Superfractor 1/1 autograph (also a PSA 9) of Francisco Lindor, which went for $102,000. The other five six-figure cards were of Joe Jackson, Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams -- cards either immensely rare or in high grades. A top-grade Michael Jordan 1986-87 Fleer Rookie Card just missed that club but set a new record for the card's sale.
A number of other key modern cards were scorchers, too -- check out a gallery and sales stats after the jump -- and some modern cases less than a decade old also commanded top dollar, too.

Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my ongoing goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.
So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ... and this time around there's a little more non-sports -- perhaps a reflection of some recent binge-watching of TV and movies that came to mind without live sports happening.

NO BASEBALL, NO MARCH MADNESS ...
The Card: Tony Gwynn 2016-17 Panini Immaculate Collection Collegiate Jersey Prime (/25)
The Price: $22.50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Back in December, I presented a similar card to this one and had it leading off -- but with there being no March Madness, no baseball, nothing ... I figured I might lead off with this one again as a reminder of what's not going on right now. As mentioned last time, this Hall of Famer's estate auctioned off a number of game-used pieces in 2015, generating more than $217,000 and among them was his first San Diego Aztecs basketball uniform that sold for $11,858 via SCP Auctions to Panini America. The swatches didn't go into a ton of different cards -- just a couple brands over a couple years -- so there's a chance there could be some more at some point. If not, these will remain classics.

MAN OF THE MOMENT ... AND WRONG SET NAME
The Item: Ronald Acuña Jr. 2019 Bowman Chrome Superfractor (1/1)
The Price: $1,799.99 opening bid (with best offer option)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This probably isn't what you're looking for with the arrival of 2019 Bowman Chrome -- it's all about prospect autos, especially in the HTA boxes linked below -- but there are other cards to look for, too, and this is one. If you click that link above you'll see something else peculiar beyond the price, which I'm not sure will even be hit opening that high. The seller mistakenly called this card a Gold Shimmer ... an error on a card of a guy who is on the cusp of some MLB history in the coming days as he's just three stolen bases away from being the youngest member of the very-exclusive 40-40 Club. If the price was low, I'd call this a steal scenario ... but it's not. (It also was fixed while I was writing this.)

BIG DEAL, BIG CARD
The Item: Aristides Aquino 2014 Bowman Chrome Prospects Superfractor autograph (1/1)
The Price: $29,999.99 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This guy has been demolishing baseballs at a record pace since Yasiel Puig was shipped to Cleveland and part of the reason you haven't seen a lot of him here on The Buzz is that there's simply not a lot of cardboard ink to go around for this new MLB star. His only MLB autographs are in 2014 Bowman Chrome -- that's it -- with the only other options being in 2015 Elite Extra Edition and 2015 Panini Contenders. He hasn't signed a thing since. He's pushing 60 autographed cards between the three releases but has just over 70 different baseball cards right now with Topps Now releases piling up of late. He'll be a 2020 Topps Series 1 Rookie Card

Mike Trout Superfractor that never happened powers big pack of Superfractor sales coming next month via Goldin Auctions
What if Mike Trout had been found on a 2011 Bowman Chrome Rookie Card autograph and it had a Superfractor parallel?
That didn't happen, but that dream cardboard scenario could have been close to reality if a new item in an upcoming Goldin Auctions event is any indicator.
It's a PSA/DNA certified Trout autograph -- that part's for sure -- on a card that looks like it could be a genuine Super from that year's release. It's a card that could have been printed by Topps but then never released when a signing couldn't be lined up in time.
