Auction Buzz: Some scorchers over at Goldin Auctions

It's looking like it will be another historic record-breaking month over at Goldin Auctions with action on the auction block already relatively intense.
How do we know that? Well, for starters, two iconic modern cards have already topped the million-dollar mark -- with more than nine days remaining -- and a huge third card from the past appears poised to get there with bids soon (it's at a mere $900,000). We'll get to two of those after looking at the hobby heavyweight you see above -- that's a sealed three-box case of 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection NBA cards.
That one is the home to LeBron James' biggest Rookie Card and parallels and it's the home of the same for Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh as well as monster cards from Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and other legends. "This singular release inspired a new and fervent, high-end market," the auction simply states -- and one really does have to wonder how many of these might still be in existence as every box has one patch auto, one rookie patch auto and more inside. It's a grail of its own unopened yet the highest of high-rollers just might get rewarded ... if they dared to open it. The current bidding? A cool $485,000 after 11 bids with nine days to go.

THE GOAT HAS A GAME
Tom Brady -- QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Rookie Cards in 2000 boxes)
Passing yards? Nobody had more than his 411 this week -- in fact, only two others topped 350. Five passing TDs? Nobody touched that, either, as his team stomped their in-state rivals. This week? With four passing TDs, he'll be the only player to ever throw for 600 TDs ... and there will be countless more looks at the greatness of his career. (At least there should be.) His RCs from 21 years ago are in-demand and pricey and, well, if you didn't grab ink long ago you're going to be paying top-dollar there, too. Is there a lot more room to grow? Well, that depends on those buying at the top of the market. For the rest of us, I think his Tampa Bay basics and non-hit rare stuff here and there might be the best way to dabble -- unless you don't have to worry about dollar signs.Keep reading for four more making up the list this time.

OLD-MAN BRADY BLOWS 'EM OUT
Tom Brady -- QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Rookie Cards in 2000 boxes)
Sure, he failed to throw for 300 yards but when the clock wound down and the numbers went into the record book he added five passing TDs to his career total (590) which is, of course, the most in NFL history. At this pace -- nine so far this season -- he'll be the first to hit 600 sometime early next month. His Rookie Cards and autos are a given that they are pricey -- and, really, some of them are still probably under-valued -- but I'd be looking at other years' flashy inserts and rare stuff along with game-used memorabilia cards that are on the cheaper side of things. Those should have growing power -- and a lot of his stuff can be cheap from the years where there were several card companies pumping out cards. His Bucs stuff should prove to be a little more popular now than other cards but I'd only focus on the rarer or interesting ones -- numbered stuff -- myself right now.Keep reading for four more making up the list this time.

THE GUY WHO FINISHED STRONG
Jonathan Taylor -- RB, Indianapolis Colts ... Rookie Cards in 2020 NFL releases
I'm big on the stat sheet -- what a player does on the field vs. what people think he might do -- and this guy leads off here because his final results as a rookie last year are impressive. If you look at last year's NFL rushing leaders, the king is Derrick Henry who put up the fifth-best season in NFL history with 2,027 yards (his RCs are in 2016 sets) then Dalvin Cook with 1,557 and then this rookie who had 1,169. That's a big drop to No. 3 for sure, but consider that only six other players even made to to 1,000 yards -- and one of them was a quarterback. There are QB questions for his team which might hamper his sophomore season but this time last year he wasn't really a scorcher, either. He finished strong. He had 101 yards in his second game but only had two other 100-yard games -- a 150-yarder and a crazy 253-yarder to end the season. That was tied for the ninth-best single game in NFL history. Imagine the possibilities if he's more consistent and is a go-to guy who can deliver. He had an impressive 11 TDs last year -- seven in his last four games -- so that and the yardage, to me, shows there's really good potential here. If you latch onto nicer cheaper options out there he's a safe buy to me ... though I actually collect other RBs who I didn't put on the list.Keep reading for four more making up the list this time.

Auction Buzz: Modern marvels (and more) end soon at Pristine

It wasn't that long ago that auction houses were the home of mostly vintage cardboard but those days are gone to a degree -- now it's the big new legendary stuff (with big names of the past) that can heat things up quite a bit.
This weekend's sale over at Pristine Auction is a prime example of this, led by this treasure from Panini America ... and it's not alone with a number of impressive pieces heading into collector hands after bidding ends on Sunday.
ONE POWERFUL PULL
The Item: A 24-legend 2020 Panini National Treasures NFL Treasure Chest 1/1 booklet card
The Price: $6,825 after 42 bids (ends Sunday)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Where do you start with a card like this when the left panel alone includes patch and tag pieces from the likes of Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. The middle? I spy Patrick Mahomes, Joe Namath, Roger Staubach and Drew Brees. And the right side? Well, that one includes Aaron Rodgers and Steve Young for starters on this quarterback classic. There's no need to name them all or overstate the obvious with this loaded 24-legend booklet as it's the only one that exists with all of these patch pieces embedded into it. Pristine calls it "nothing short of epic" and the final price should get even more dramatic before it ends. In case you're wondering, the card notes that the Brady, Brees, Griese, Foles and McMahon swatches are game-used. It's an epic find with so much NFL success all in one spot.Keep reading for a look at a few more items presently up for grabs.
