Check those 2024 Bowman card backs ... for some weird facts
Have you looked at your 2024 Bowman card backs yet?
It's fine if you haven't -- we know you're busy looking for the new big names, their colorful Chrome parallels and, of course, their autographs -- but for years now there have been tons of trivial nuggets that appear on cards that can be downright odd.
They're found on the "Up Close" blurbs across all base and prospect cards in this release -- and plenty of past ones -- and after ripping my first blaster of the year I did my check for them ... and again they delivered ... even with a small sample size.
The Adley Rutschman card above was perhaps the standout of the small bunch in my box with "bountiful hugs," the origin of "Rooster" as part of a Top Gun: Maverick name-drop and a nod to family sports, too. They're not all that jam-packed, but every card has Up Close details from what I've seen this year.
Let's take a look at 20 more card backs from 2024 Bowman cards ...
Book It, Buzz: Landing basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
For years now, autographed books coming direct from the publishers -- or direct from the authors themselves -- have been an affordable way to collect ink from notable names in all realms of pop culture.
It's not a perfect system with stamps, fakes and autopens sometimes in the mix -- a problem for publishers to catch as they are not authenticators -- but thanks to dedicated collectors on the Blowout Cards Forum and elsewhere, those problems often get caught and fixed ... or at least become well-known enough to avoid if it's an issue that goes uncorrected.
Getting ink in-person is always best -- book tours still happen, of course -- but landing autographed editions from publishers, online sellers or celebs themselves via their websites or other appearances are common. So, with that said, here's the first of what just might become a monthly department here on The Buzz for this new year
Our first subject and autograph to start this series? Basketball Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Ticket Stud or Ticket Dud? You decide ... here's Chapter 37
With these Ticket Stud or Ticket Dud stories I'm turning just a tiny bit of that energy just a few degrees away from cards (we'll still have plenty of them here) for a different kind of cardboard. What am I doing? Simple ... this is an occasional dip into some random ticket lots -- a show and tell showing something small with a story.
This time? A decade ago in college football.
Keep reading to see the details this time ... and tell me if you think it's a Ticket Stud or a Ticket Dud.
America at War card set includes plenty of history, notable ink
It's been about a decade since America at War Band of Brothers Series 1 arrived from Valor Studios with a cardboard look back at World War II, but its energy and history is just as rich today.
It's an all-in-one release -- a pair of sets totaling 192 cards -- along with four promo cards in a box.
There is a chase element, though, as one in six boxes includes an autograph or sketch card -- and that's where there are some inclusions that could have resonance beyond just fans of U.S. military history.
Dick Enberg's legendary career includes very few card appearances
One of the familiar voices in all of the sports world -- a long-time broadcaster for NBC, CBS and ESPN who covered Wimbledon 28 times, covered 10 Super Bowls and covered eight NCAA men's basketball championships along with much, much more -- has been silenced.
Dick Enberg was 82.
Despite a Hall of Fame career and plenty of time in homes on TV since the 1960s when he covered John Wooden's UCLA Bruins, he's only got a handful of sports card appearances from the past -- and, of those, really only one is easy to find.
