Base cards/coins – Shohei Ohtani, Jose Altuve (announced as /3,000)

What's Buzz-worthy: There have been a couple of coin releases for MLB in recent years and this more-recent one is not without a chase to make this box one to ponder opening. There are 20 coins in all (/3,000) and each has a Silver Plate (/300), Gold Plate (/30) and 1/1 one-ounce troy Silver parallels. The five rookies here are announced as short-prints and they're minted at just a third of the standard coins -- 1,000/100/10 -- save for the 1/1, which is the same. My box included perhaps the biggest name in the game today -- Shohei Ohtani -- along with a former batting champ and MVP. The full lineup can be seen below -- you get a checklist in every box -- and others of note are pretty strong. The rookie crop has not aged well, but that's only five of the 15 names here and since they're SPs that won't necessarily hurt that much, anyway. These boxes are modestly priced compared to a lot of retail these days, so there's a bit of a sure thing -- you have a roughly one in eight shot at the standard stars with a box -- and then parallels or rookies might pop up. If you like to crunch numbers, all the info is there for you to figure out odds for the full run ... even for the rarest stuff. It doesn't seem like an impossible rip, really. Part of me wants to hunt down a couple other names here, too, after doing this one as a throw-in with other boxes ... sometimes dabbling can pay off.

Product Grade: A- (small lineup with parallels and SP rookies)
Box Grade:
A- (Ohtani gets this one to A status this time)
Fun Grade: B (no frills here ... twoper pack and not wrapped inside box other than holder)
