Garbage Pail Kids
Board Buzz: Must-read threads on Blowout Forums (Feb. 17)
The Blowout Cards Forums are where thousands of collectors converge daily to discuss, well, a little bit of everything. Here are a few threads about collecting and more that you should check out right now.
What's Buzzing: Project70 arrives today, pondering parameters, 2021 Topps breaks and more in today's edition.
Gamestonk Garbage Pail Kids are here ... for a short time
Update: Topps sold 13,075 of these sets, which looks like a new record for a GPK print-to-order release.

"Did you get rich off GameStop? Why not commemorate your stock market victory with this great GPK set?"
That's the opening line -- and, really, the only one -- describing the new 2021 Topps Garbage Pail Kids Gamestonk card set that dropped from Topps today with the Kids taking on the stock market talker of this week via a set of 12 stickers.
They'll be printed to order -- meaning whatever is ordered is what is made -- after one week on Topps.com.
Modern Wax Fund surges in debut year as sports cards soar
In its first 10 months, The Modern Wax Fund reflected some crazy times in the sports card world.
How crazy? The Fund's valuation report of the underlying asset holdings during its rookie season shows an overall increase of 195.1 percent, fueled by an explosion of interest for the recent-year NBA assets. Basketball boxes alone jumped 301 percent in a year, while NFL also had a 164-percent jump and "other sports" (in lower total volume) jumped 194 percent.
This first-of-its-kind private-equity fund focused on trading cards is a creation of Attic Investments and Blowout Cards. It started with more than $3 million in unopened product -- some of the rarest and most-desired baseball, basketball, football and other cards from the modern era -- last February with a $25,000 minimum buy-in from investors.

Buzz Buys: Rhea Ripley's best, big Marino botch, Rex Chapman, Axl Rose, John Lewis, Black Panther, Gina Carano's dad & more
Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.
So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ... and this time around there's a bit of everything.

A SLEEPER NO MORE
The Card: Rhea Ripley 2020 Topps WWE Transcendent Collection -- Rookie Card (/50)
The Price: More than I want to admit ... but less than a Chrome box
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This was a card I was watching for intently when the second edition of Topps' WWE super-premium brand arrived, and this one was on my radar before any autograph in the super-rare release -- well at least within my typical budget. Why? She's pretty much the only newcomer of note in the base set -- I spy at least one other who is no longer with WWE and one other lesser name -- amidst a sea of past greats and some notables from today. It's an odd set as it's not the typical lineup but also not a full lineup. (I think the checklist-maker tried to cover all the main bases between the base set and the auto set.) Nobody got an RC logo here and this card's thunder may be stolen a bit with the delays resulting in her Undisputed and Chrome cards arriving close together -- and with her first certified autos -- just recently. This card has topped the $100 mark and is bolstering some of the base set prices out there. (On the cheapest side, these were around $60 in terms of sales but asking prices are now far higher.) I'm somewhere in between but I ponied up as this Aussie badass should be a major player soon. I'll grab ink and other cards eventually.

ALL ABOUT THE PHOTOS
The Item: Zion Williamson 2019-20 Panini Chronicles Luminance Rookie Card
The Price: $114.99 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Searches for Chronicles really overload me -- there's just too much to choose from and then there are parallels atop all of them (so there are likely better bargains than this particular card and its price) -- but this set jumped out from the rest from this new and red-hot release. Luminance is all about the photos with a simple 1996-97 Fleer Ultra-ish feel (but no tail on the letters) and it might be the best of the best in this catch-all release. This card, the Ja Morant (even better) and the Luka Doncic card are all solid pieces and I'm sure there are others. Over time, the basic cards like this one will stand out from the rest because of the images even if they are easier finds than other rarer but uglier cards. It also doesn't hurt that Williamson is in his red uni here ... so many (too many) were in the drab blue uniforms we've seen all season long from the rookie photo shoot. Luminance is just 30 cards in Chronicles but each has nine parallel sets and some are very rare ... so it will be a bit of a challenge to collect 'em all. I would if I was patient enough.

Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.
Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ...
The Card: Dak Prescott 2016 Donruss #362 Rookie Card
The Reason Bought: It takes a pretty good deal for one of my buys to lead off here instead of one of my newly submitted grades, but this one was just that. This is one of those cards that is relatively available if you want to chase one down and slab it for some fun or profit. My cost? About $22, which might seem high generally speaking but isn't for its grade -- this was about half the price of the other cards in the same grade where I was looking at the time. They are even higher now.
The Grade: BGS 10Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 B10 Total Population 0 0 0 2 1 1 8 30 305 26 0 373 Reality Check: This one is just a half-grade away from a perfect BGS Black slab and the percentage of cards to get this mark is pretty low vs. the overall total. That's what surprised me here more and prompted the pick-up. It's a relatively heavily graded card, too, which you'd think would have resulted in more 10s. (Paper stock can be more pesky than Optic stuff when it comes to grading, though.)

The Card: Ronald Acuña Jr. 2018 Topps Chrome Update #HMT25 Rookie Card
The Reason Graded: I only opened a couple of mega boxes for this brand but did land this guy -- and, man, do I wish this card had used the bat-down photo. (What could have been?) I recently revisited a few of my boxes holding the finds of my buys last year and this one struck me as a clean example worth a slab, especially with him having had an elite season coming up just short of being the youngest member of the elite 40-40 Club.
The Grade: BGS 9.5Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 B10 Total Population 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 18 348 83 8 459 Reality Check: Turns out I was right, though this is a card that's heavily graded with a growing pop report since I submitted this one. There was a 10 grade right after mine in the serial-numbering line and there have been plenty of 9.5s graded since -- and even the 10s aren't all that rare for this one. There's plenty here to feed the demand for a guy who should be on collector radars for years. You'll see more of Acuña here.

Buzz Buys: Roger Maris, Allen Iverson, WWE stars, Sonequa Martin-Green, Rubin Carter, Mr. Baseball & other legends
Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals just might be to rip fewer blasters this year and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention. Would they capture yours? I'd be interested to know -- sometimes they might, sometimes they won't and that's fine. It's a buyer's market out there with plenty of options and bargains as well as high-end gems to chase.
So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ... and this time around it's a baker's dozen (that doesn't include Mayfield ... this time).

A MARIS WITH A TWIST?
The Card: Roger Maris 2018 Panini National Treasures Game Gear Duals (/49)
The Price: $30
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I sprung for this card at a slightly higher price than I might normally do for a Maris memorabilia card because of the small sliver of a red patch that caught my eye but remained a mystery. The New York Yankees weren't known for a lot of patches on their uniforms, let alone any red ones, but perhaps this one came from a sleeve? After buying and then doing some homework, I think the pinstripes led me astray. After receiving the card, I remembered an errant comment I heard years ago -- a rumor about Panini looking at a Cleveland Indians jersey at auction -- and I simply Googled "Roger Maris game-used jersey auction" and found a visual that perhaps answered my pinstripe mystery. Then a couple of cross-searches led me here. The Indians wore pinstripes for a time and it was a time when Maris was there. The colors match and the fabric consistency looks to be right, too. Could this be a sliver of a sleeve patch? We don't get a good view there, but it could be. It could also be something from the Kansas City A's though I couldn't find any info on them wearing pinstripes while Maris was there. It's not definitive -- and it still could be a sleeve patch from a Yankees jersey -- but I think I'm comfortable with my newest Maris patch (barely) card.

Garbage Pail Kids hit cereal, energy drinks, chocolate at FYE
To collect 'em all, you'll need some cereal.
Topps' Garbage Pail Kids are coming to FYE stores with a little more than just stickers involved. In fact, it's the stickers that are the insert in new Garbage Pail Kids Cereal revealed on Monday.
A mix of "crazy crisps and marshmallow barf bits" make up this one with two of four stickers included in every box. And cereal isn't the only option as an energy drink and chocolate bars are also on the way with GPK branding.
“As long-time Garbage Pail Kids fans, we are excited to be bringing this pop-culture classic to our customers in new and innovative ways,” says Jodie Evans, FYE’s SVP of Entertainment Merchandising and Marketing. “To further the interactive experience, we’ll be hosting [GPK artist Joe Simko] at a variety of live events to autograph cereal boxes, provide GPK sketches and engage with fans.”
