Collecting Ink: Not all autographs are alike ... let's explore

Many people collect autographs -- but not in the same ways -- and not all autographs are made alike. Some are mass-produced, some are in packs. Some are personalized, some are not. Some have all kinds of documentation and many, many more have none at all ... here's a look at a few that have entered my collection in recent months as part of what will now be an ongoing series here.
CERTIFIED INK
The Item: John Cena autographed The Last Time Is Now retirement tour 11-by-14 -- created and only initially sold by WWE
What It Cost Me: $24 via an autograph mystery buy
What's It Worth: He signed a lot of similar prints last year, typically selling for $75-100 and up over on eBay
The Buzz: The year-long retirement tour of WWE's top active star meant plenty of city-specific merch at many of his stops and then other general stuff like this signed print that was sold at other events. This one isn't tied to any one city -- many are and with some having announced editions of 1,000 copies -- and this one didn't have a specific volume signed that I have seen anywhere but I was more than pleased when I landed this one in a mystery box recently at a sliver of its typical eBay pricing. These photos were not sold unsigned and were released by WWE, making this a certified auto via them. Some eBay sellers have gotten these third-party authenticated (and that brings safety in the eyes of some buyers willing to pay more) while this is just like most of those that were signed. Cena's autographs are in high demand -- and perhaps higher demand now with life away from the ring to amp up more with him perhaps signing less WWE stuff -- but he's also been a signing machine for a long time. Watch this video from years ago. I have had his auto a few times on cards and other items from back in the day, so the stuff like this would not have been on my radar or in my collection if it wasn't for a mystery buy. I'll take it.

Collecting Game-used: A small bit of Spencer Strasmore's saga

This unusual item in my collection comes from a high-profile dealmaker in the reel world and since it was captured on film that makes this piece game-used ... used in The Hollywood Game that is.
My latest in the Collecting Game-used series is something I grabbed last year but it got lost in the shuffle with some delays on photo-matching end and, well, it's still not yet definitively matched to the frame above -- but I think it's likely. It's something straight from the production of Ballers and the fuzzy visual above was found, with some dumb luck, in a semi-pirated, fan-tweaked clip somewhere out there on YouTube months ago. Rather than spend more time and a few bucks to revisit HBO Max and find it, I'm just going to let it roll here today.
What is this super-cheap but unusual addition to my collection of weird sports stuff? Keep reading.
Fast Five: Forget Oscars ... I want card sets for these epic films

Fast Five is a quick list that might offer a basic starting point for a themed collection or new focus -- five things that could be fun for a beginner or a new way to add something to your stash if you're a grizzled veteran.
This time? Five past movies Buzz wants to see on card sets. New Oscar nominations? No need for me -- I'm not sure I have seen any of the movies up for honors this year. I'm too busy Buzzing with cardboard but I can do a film twist here today. How about some films that I'd want to see on cardboard? I can totally do that ... though it's not easily said and done for card companies to do so with licensing costs and the reality that sets need autographs today -- so Hollywood A-lister ink is a big obstacle.
NEED THIS ONE IN WIDEVISION ...
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Remember the days when Topps took its "tallboy" card size and flipped it sideways to show off widescreen scenes from Star Wars movies? Fury Road is one of those kinds of movies where landscapes and dramatic visuals would make for some cool cards. Among the cast members are some big names then and some names that are perhaps bigger now, too. Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoë Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Riley Keough are of note here. (If you don't know some of them, Google them.) You have seen some of them elsewhere on cardboard already but this one would be far about more than just ink. It's not my flashiest pick here but it's the newest film from my top-of-my-head list ... you know, a fast five.Keep reading for four more.
