Board Buzz: Must-read threads on Blowout Forums (Oct. 12)

The Blowout Cards Forums are where thousands of collectors converge daily to discuss, well, a little bit of everything. Here are a few threads about collecting and more that you should check out right now.
What's Buzzing: The MLB postseason, Josh Allen, NBA chatter, well-timed pulls, Marvel cards and more.
Buzz Break: Giant-size Box of Mystery comics repack box

From time to time, Buzz will break a box of something and post the results here. Like this and want to see more? Or maybe there's a box you'd want to see busted? Send Buzz an email at BlowoutBuzz@blowoutcards.com.

Making the Grade (Sept.): Rookie Cards, some iconic comics, Prizm pulls, young stars' ink, both Bo's & more in a big edition

Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.
Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ... and it might be the biggest edition ever.
BIG SEASON AHEAD?
The Card: Josh Allen 2018 Donruss Optic #154 -- Rookie Card
The Reason Graded: I pulled a pair of these from a number of rips -- probably deep in the archives here if you poke around -- but I never slabbed any of them back then, instead grading guys like Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield and maybe a Nick Chubb. Meanwhile, it turns out this guy might be The One over the long term from this rookie class. After this past season's successes and close finish at the end, I figured it was time to grade a pair of these and I'm still working through some of my past pulls to see if I need to grade more for this franchise QB.
The Grade: CSG 10Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 P10 Total Population 0 0 0 1 2 1 17 28 3 44 0 95 Reality Check: I was happy with this one (and I'll drop my other one here at some point later this season) as Optic stock can be hit and miss, particularly on the backs. Sometimes it's dents and wrinkles or minor dents but this one was clean. It looks like these do grade pretty well with nearly half of them getting this mark. An interesting comparison to make here? PSA has graded more than 2,500 of these with more than half being 10s, while BGS has graded only 160 and SGC has slabbed 320.

Making the Grade (July): Iconic Rookie Cards, Mr. America, Jay-Z, Mr. 3,000, old comics, indy wrestling, WWE Prizm, Conor McGregor, Hammerin' Hank & more in this super-sized edition

BETTER THAN LAST TIME ...
The Card: Ja Morant 2019-20 Panini Chronicles Luminance #165 -- Rookie Card
The Reason Graded: Somewhere in a past item in this series there's a Pink parallel of this cool card buried in a post as it was one of only a few bummers I've had with a low mark -- one that was too low for my taste as I had apparently missed a rough edge. This time? Well, this was the one I didn't send in back then and that's because I thought it had an edge spot that I thought might nix a top grade ... but I was wrong again. With this card having an iconic photo -- one that makes it easily his best RC to me (I'm merely a casual NBA ripper) -- I threw it in a bulk sub to see how I'd do. It's an absolutely epic photo ... even though it was a missed dunk.
The Grade: CSG 10Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 P10 Total Population 0 3 0 0 2 4 22 138 13 249 0 431 Reality Check: This is a card with a pretty big volume graded -- and a good chunk of those checking in lower than mine. All in all, it's a win that takes away the sting from last time.

Buzz Buys: Mickey Mantle, Rosario Dawson, The Babe, Bo's RC, WWE icons & newcomers, old magazines, comics & plenty more

Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.
So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ...

MY LAST FROM THE PROJECT ...
The Card: Mickey Mantle 2021 Topps Project70 by Alex Pardee (/12,112)
The Price: $19.99 via Topps
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This artist captured most of the big-print-run attention in the second Project and this card that mashed his monster vibes with Mantle's 1952 Topps card and then 1981 Topps was the last one to get my attention and a buy last year. (Or was it this year?) Anyway, this one recently arrived in my mailbox and since this year's Project100 has arrived with a totally different approach and a number of changes -- not all good ones in my view -- I figured I'd drop this here. The print run of this won't be touched this year -- they're capped at less than half of that for 2022 -- but I suspect I'll be keeping an eye on the offerings. You should keep an eye on the past cards now if you passed before ... and keep an eye open on the new ones, too. You never know where the collecting winds and tastes might spark interest. Some monsters could be waiting.

WITH CLAWS I
The Card: Wolverine sketch card by Skip Charron -- 2017 Upper Deck Marvel Annual Sketch Cards (1/1)
The Price: $24
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: There are a boatload of quality sketch cards out there in the world that seem seriously undervalued right now despite the fact that everything is one of a kind. This one is nice -- a color piece of an iconic character -- but these types of cards are also really the kind of item where one can't say "go grab all of these" as they are one of a kind and they can all be so different between artists and subjects. Why does this one lead off this time? To make that point -- if you can't find boxes, don't like prices on new Rated Rookies who haven't even hit your store shelves yet or just want to try something different ... then you might check out stuff you might not have at this time a year or two ago. That's what I did here.

GIVE 'EM A HAND ...
The Piece: Calvin Ridley 2018 Panini Instant Instant Impressions autographed hand print (/10)
The Price: $60 (shipped)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I picked this one up earlier this year when Panini had a half-price sale on Panini Instant stuff and I think it was a gem of a find considering he's had some strong showings for the Falcons. (Beyond that he fits one of my collecting niches.) What is this? It's a huge card -- not a card, really but it does have a full back so it's a card that's a couple feet tall -- with his handprint and autograph worked into the mix. The signature is slightly more full than many of his cards (believe it or not) but the uniqueness of the whole package drew me in ... especially at half price.

ALL ABOUT THE INK ...
2016 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball Hobby Box
Heritage High Number wasn't always quite as loaded as it is these days, but that's not to say that past boxes aren't worth a look -- it's just for different reasons (and players), especially when it's as cheap as this one is right now. The base set here is pretty small so that can limit some of the oomph, but you can find RCs for Willson Contreras, Edwin Diaz, Lance McCullers, Albert Almora, Kenta Maeda, Blake Snell and Trevor Story -- not the best crop but the next list is the one that matters. Among the autographs here? Bryce Harper, Buster Posey, Blake Snell, Carlos Correa, Carl Yastrzemski, David Ortiz, Frank Robinson, Hank Aaron, Ichiro Suzuki, Johnny Bench, Kris Bryant, Nolan Arenado, Rod Carew, Reggie Jackson, Trevor Story, Trea Turner and Mike Trout. They're obviously not in every box ... but they are possible. When boxes drop is the time to dig in to chase them (and so much more) in Heritage.eBay Buzz: Ken Griffey Jr. & Ken Burns get Ginter ink, Conan O'Brien hits SDCC, Rey Mysterio signs & an Albert Pujols steal?

JUNIOR IN GINTER
The Item: Ken Griffey Jr. 2019 Topps Allen & Ginter framed mini autograph
The Price: $499.95 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This is one of a number of noteworthy autos in this year's Allen & Ginter release and in my mind the safest baseball card buys these days for the long term aren't the new-car priced slabbed Bowman Chrome debut prospect cards but rather the rarer obviously short-printed Hall of Fame caliber names in brands like this one and Topps Heritage. Once these dry up, those prices will inevitably get higher. You can't say that for the guys who haven't gotten their MLB careers going yet. Ginter is one of those releases with a big checklist and a definite volume difference between the standard autos and the rares yet nothing is numbered. That helps add to the mystery over time. Plus, that auto just looks good here.
