Don Rickles spent decades in Hollywood -- but didn't sign much

He was a comedian known for his witty remarks and scathing humor with countless Hollywood credits since the 1950s.
Despite all those years in entertainment, you won't find too many certified autograph cards for Don Rickles, who died of kidney failure today at 90 years old.

Are all buyback autographed cards the same? Not this one ...

It's got some rough edges, fuzzy corners, some light surface snow, and a curved-but-not-awful corner crease -- but it's got some character and it's mine.
And it's also signed by Rickey Henderson.
It's a copy of his 1980 Topps Rookie Card and it's also a recent pickup from a major autograph dealer. It's also a story that has a few pieces that this collector thought made it interesting enough to present right here.

Celebrity autographs just might be easier to find than you think

When it comes to autographs in the sports world, there are plenty of ways that collectors and the autograph industry itself has helped commodify ink.
In other words, there are a number of common items that are commonly signed that help us all figure a common value that we'd expect to pay or expect to get if we have to sell something we own. Jerseys, balls, helmets, cards, photos -- there are a lot of ways to collect sports autographs. But for celebrity autographs, it's a lot less complicated as the 8-by-10 photo is arguably the most-commonly solid piece across the whole spectrum of television, movies and others of note who we might find, say, at a comic book convention or other similarly organized signing session. Not all films have massive toy lines, not all celebs have book deals and TV shows often don't have posters you can find all that easily.

Byron "Whizzer" White's cardboard options aren't all that supreme

If you happened to turn on a cable news network Tuesday afternoon and see the confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, you may have seen a weird discussion with Texas Senator Ted Cruz that had nothing to do with politics.
It had plenty to do with basketball -- and the skills of a former associate justice of the Supreme Court, Byron White, who was appointed to the court in 1962 and was there until 1993.
Apparently he was known for his elbows and odd free-throws -- and what was mentioned in passing as part of this off-topic discussion? The NFL.
