Carrie Fisher's iconic role as Princess Leia led to a lot of cardboard

One of the biggest stars in the Star Wars universe has died.
Carrie Fisher, who was born to Hollywood stars before the fame of playing the iconic Princess Leia, died on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack last week. She was 60.
The news was announced by a spokesman on behalf of her daughter.
“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother, Carrie Fisher, passed away at 8:55 this morning,” the statement said. “She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”

Without legend of Steve Dalkowski there might not be a Bull Durham ... let alone thoughts of Bull Durham 2

In an interview with Dan Patrick this week, Kevin Costner said he'd be opening to reprising the role of Crash Davis in Bull Durham 2 if creator Ron Shelton was open to the idea and could draft the next chapter in the story of big-screen players that have become minor-league baseball icons.
But there's one cardboard icon in the real world who's partly responsible for the creation of the 1988 film in the first place.
He's Steve Dalkowski.
Topps launches Star Wars Authentics site to offer autographs & photographs from franchise

You can find the autographs from the stars of Star Wars in packs of Topps cards but now you can find them on photographs and more from the newest official source of authentic ink for the legendary sci-fi franchise.
It's Star Wars Authentics and Topps launched the division and its website, starwarsauthentics.com, on Wednesday to everyone who's not in a galaxy far, far away.
“We identified a hole in the entertainment industry -- a need for certified authentic pieces for the Star Wars brand -- and with this collaboration we are able to meet consumer demand," said David Leiner, Topps' GM and VP of the North American Sports & Entertainment division. "Topps excels in visual arts and printing technologies and we are thrilled to bring our expertise to Star Wars, building upon our trading card and Major League Baseball memorabilia business.”

Free Comic Book Day freebies will include Spider-Man, The Legend of Zelda, Star Trek & plenty more

Free Comic Book Day is still a few months away but it's never to soon to see what the SWAG will include.
A dozen free issues made for the hobby-shop holiday were revealed by its organizers on Monday with titles from Marvel and DC a bit more secretive than others, which include books from Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, Image Comics, Archie Comics, Bongo Comics, BOOM! Studios, ONI Press, Titan Comics, Valiant Entertainment and Viz Media. It's all your fault, Nintendo ... but at least I've still got baseball cards

It's all your fault, Nintendo.
The hottest (though seemingly non-existent) toy of the holiday season has been without question the NES Classic, a miniature modern-day version of the old Nintendo Entertainment System pre-loaded with 30 different games from the heyday of the 8-bit platform.
Buzz knew this would be big the day it was revealed months ago and I've checked chain stores multiple times a week in the time since its arrival last month seeking that Shangri-La Shelf where the Classic sat at its posted price of $59.99 -- not the massive amounts more allegedly being paid on eBay. (Sure, some of those "sales" aren't legit -- many of them in fact -- but some of the lesser high-priced sales wouldn't shock me since I'm sure the NES Classic has caused angst for other people out there.)
There was a side effect after all this aisle-walking and checking out video games like I hadn't done in years, if ever. It made me do something I never would have predicted months ago.
