Looking back at Ron Blomberg as MLB ponders DH in National League
You probably don't know the name Ron Blomberg, but he was the first-overall pick in the 1967 MLB Draft and a big-leaguer for parts of eight seasons with the Yankees and White Sox.But if you do know his name it's probably because of one thing -- he was the first designated hitter in MLB history.
Could there be more hitting history made soon? Perhaps with the MLB owners' meetings this week in Florida where the owners are considering adopting the DH in the National League as soon as next season. Such a change wouldn't be possible without the approval of the MLBPA but it still could happen.
Buzz List: Nine autographs to find in 2013 & 2014 Elite Extra Edition boxes
Countless collectors call themselves prospectors, and that particular focus is one that can lead to a lot of pack-ripping or a lot of secondary market purchases with future flips in mind. One brand that's got many of those coveted newcomer names year after year is Elite Extra Edition, which is Panini America's foilboard-focused prospecting brand that typically packs one of the deepest checklists and, with Hot Boxes, some of the highest autograph totals in the hobby.
While the dust isn't yet settling on the recently released newest edition of the brand, Buzz decided to take a look back at nine names who you should know from the previous two editions (2013 and 2014) and see how they did last season. Why? There are inevitably some bargains to be had if you consider this brand and these guys (along with countless other players that may not yet be on the radars of too many prospectors) given box prices these days. After all, old wax can still be good wax if the price is right.

Favorite players/teams: I’ve always loved Yankees first basemen. When I started collecting again in 2008, I decided to "supercollect" Mark Teixeira. It was going good for a long time, but was getting frustrating as I was constantly getting outbid on auction sites by someone I dubbed as my "Nemesis." Long Story short, that collector was featured on Buzz, Robert Morris, and to this day he remains one of my best collecting friends. I eventually conceded my collection to him and sent him all of my 1/1s to add to his insane collection. I still have great stuff, but I knew when to cut my losses.
Aroldis Chapman should be hobby star as closer for New York Yankees

Not long ago, we thought Cuban fireballer and four-time All-Star Aroldis Chapman was on his way to Los Angeles after the Dodgers agreed to trade a pair of prospects to land him.
But, after a deal on Monday, he's headed to New York to be the closer for the Yankees.
What does it mean for Chapman's baseball cards?
Julio Jones & Kirk Cousins among NFL's most Buzz-worthy players in Week 16
The Atlanta Falcons took a 7-7 record into their game against the undefeated Carolina Panthers on Sunday and thanks to one guy's one big play they recorded their biggest win of the season. The player was WR Julio Jones and the play was a 70-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter -- the biggest part of a nine-catch, 178-yard day. Jones has been one of the better receivers in the league, but this is one play for the highlight reels that could live on for some time.
His Rookie Cards can be found back in 2011 products and, in general, his autographs aren't all that plentiful. Combine that with interest from his past Alabama Crimson Tide fans and some of those early cards can be tougher to find.

Making the Grade: Grading diary debut includes Derek Jeter, legendary ink, vintage, WWE Diva Paige & more
Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade. For the first grading diary here on The Buzz, it will be a mix of cards graded for a few reasons.
The Card: 1993 Upper Deck #449 Derek Jeter
The Reason Graded: This was pulled straight from an underpriced factory set and looked very clean except for a tiny spot on the back -- Buzz figured it might push into the high grades even with the gloss issue. These cards are also not easy to pull from wax or sets cleanly because the high-gloss cards often stick together, peeling away specks of paper. Another reason? This is an iconic card that's worth grading if you own a clean one.
The Grade: BGS 9Grade: 5 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 Total Population: 24 20 65 124 334 761 1,314 1,579 806 307 3 5,360 Reality Check: The SP Jeter rookie is the one people chase, not this one. This one's $20 on eBay -- and perhaps undervalued considering how they grade on the pop report. BGS 9s and higher are really much rarer than people think.
PSA 8 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle sets new record with Heritage sale
Heritage Auctions' sale of a PSA 8 Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps card set another record for the card in its condition this week."The 1952 Topps Mantle rookie is a truly transcendent piece of Americana," said Chris Ivy, the Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage. "It looms in the collective American imagination like a copy of Action Comics #1, an inverted Jenny stamp or an Abe Lincoln autograph. You don't have to collect baseball cards to recognize it, so thoroughly is it woven into the national consciousness."
So, how much for the icon of all post-war baseball card icons?

The Blowout Cards Forums are where thousands of collectors converge daily to discuss, well, a little bit of everything. Yankees pitcher Luis Severino joins Topps Authentics roster
Topps Authentics now has an ace on its roster as New York Yankees rookie Luis Severino has signed a exclusive autographed memorabilia deal. The right-hander's autographed baseballs, jerseys, oversized cards and other memorabilia will only be signed for Topps Authentics going forward.
Topps Authentics previously launched with American League Rookie of the Year Carlos Correa of the Houston Astros as its core player. The autographed items for both players are initially sold only via Topps.com.
eBay Buzz: Big bucks aren't just tossed around for Bowman Supers
With Bowman Draft officially arriving tomorrow, eBay will undoubtedly be buzzing with the newest can't-miss future stars' first MLB cards.
But Bowman's not just a big deal for high-grade Chromes and Superfractors. Vintage Bowman in top grade -- like this 1954 Bowman Mickey Mantle -- can generate some looks, too.
This card, in its grade, is a 1/1 specimen. It's a card that can give any Superfractor a run for its graded money without any of those golden swirls or a dollop of autograph ink.
